Rolex Submariner 16610/14060 vs Omega Speedmaster Professional 3861

I’ve been saving since I was 16 (now 18) for this moment, after this summer working 2 jobs I’ll be able fortunate enough to afford and purchase one of my grail pieces. However, I’m sure this community can relate to this feeling of indecisiveness and as a result wanted to ask existing owners of either/both their thoughts on which one I should get? Both fulfill my personal criteria hence my nervousness with the opportunity cost each presents. Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks #watchcrunch community!

You and my dad would get along 😂😂😂

Without wishing to sound patronising, congratulations to you, what a great achievement at such a young age. If you possibly can, I would try both on - they wear very differently and I suspect you will immediately have a preference once you have them on. Having said that of course you can’t go wrong with either. My personal preference would be for a hesalite Speedmaster.

Sub

2 of the most iconic watches of all time!

I say get both!

My dad would fit in there. He left me his '73 vintage Seamaster Chronograph.

Ah, see, here on WatchCrunch, no matter the question, the answer is always (d) Seiko.

This, in particular...

  • Cheaper than either of the other two

  • Better finishing by 100x

  • GMT sexiness

  • And who doesn't want to be a weeaboo?

“I’d with go with the Omega. It’s a great first time all around watch.” With your work ethic you’ll be buying the other watch soon enough. Good luck and welcome to he club.

Any other options? And what else is in your collection?

I’d go sub bc of the water resistance, would hate to worry about that if it was my only watch. You’re probably washing your hands way more often than you’re going to space.

·

For resale, Rolex obviously. That's what I'd get.

But my heart says Speedy which I own and have specific historical life milestones associated with it so very bias.

I'd say get both, as both are icons of their respective brands.

·

I've had both over the years, but the Sub has gone, I just got tired of it.

I wouldn't class it as a 'choice' to be made as you will def have both at some stage for sure. So it's more which one do you want to experience first.

·

Difficult choice, but the 14060 just gets my vote; slightly more expensive with box an paper than the Omega.

However, the Hesalite Speedy is a sublime and classy watch. Maybe look at Max's video https://youtu.be/aIS1dK9Hk_Y comparing Speedmaster Pro/Reduced and Broad Arrow to give you more to think about.

Perhaps consider the Broad Arrow as a start-point for your watch collecting journey. It's a bit of a sleeper, but ticks many boxes IMHO. There are plenty out there and they are very reasonably priced: https://www.chrono24.com/omega/ref-35515000.htm?man=omega&refId=35515000&showpage=&sortorder=1. Pocket the money you would have spent on the 'big borthers' and treat yourself again when you win your first big law case ;-)

Happy hunting.

I have both but the Speedy always gets more of my wrist time. The dial is simply stunning!

·

I got a no date sub at retail and the specs and bracelet are nice but the older references are cooler.

I love my speedy, but it doesn’t like to swim and I live at the beach.

One watch Id go Sub.

·

Rolex Sub from an investment point of view. You would not lose value. The only problem is getting them from an AD.

However, more bang for the buck is Omega Seamaster Professional. You will have enough money left over to buy another Omega or other brand within 5k range. Both are great built quality and look great. I would try them both on from AD and then make the decision.

·

This is such a personal question. I would recommend going to a boutique or an AD and try them on. See how the watches speaks to you and how it fits.

I won’t repeat the pros and cons of either watches since so many have already done it. Hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get!

·

I would encourage anyone not to get a Speedmaster. You are not even an American boomer, so I'm puzzled as to why you'd want one.

·

These are available to try on at retail. Have you gotten any hands on with them? I find your feelings really change after. You'll immediately know which one.

Haha, appreciate the kind words. Tbh I’ve always overlooked the broad arrow but I think I need another trip to my Omega AD to try this on instead of just looking over it. Thanks for the input, have a great day ❤️🙏🏻

This is an old model (Ref 3594.50.00), so AD will probably not have it. Known as the 'Relaunch: https://www.chrono24.com/omega/speedmaster-broad-arrow-chronograph-herrenuhr-edelstahl-ref-35945000--id28914915.htm '

I’m curious, why wouldn’t you recommend a Speedy?

Jaeger LeCourtre!

(Jlc fanboy here)

But really, I'd go with the advice of getting it on the wrist and experiencing them. I'm partial to the speedmaster because it is iconic. So is the sub, but almost too much for me. Like, most divers are trying to copy it so much, it feels too unremarkable because of how iconic it is.

In short, because my biases don't like them. I hate the looks, the size, the way they've milked the Moon thing (which IIRC they won be default), and I have a stereotype of their owners as unimaginative cornpone boomer rubes that bought a story.

They're probably fine for the people that like them.

Fair enough!

Sub 14060. Work two more summers and get the Speedy. 😉 You CAN have it all.

·

Congratulations on being able to consider purchasing these watches at such a young age.

I have both a 3861 Speedy sapphire sandwich and an 114060 Rolex Sub and choosing between them is extremely tough.

I really like the Speedy for it's legibility, with the white hands contrasting wonderfully against the black dial, and the chrono sub registers blending into the dial. Since it's manual wind, it's also reasonably thin for a chronograph, and with the sapphire sandwich, you get to view the nicely finished movement without a rotor obstructing the view. The new hackable METAS certified 3861 movement keeps excellent time, and is highly resistant to magnetism. The power reserve is great, exceeding the advertised 50 hours. The case on the Speedy is really attractive with the lyre lugs, and the new bracelet is super comfortable, although it does lack on the fly micro adjustments.

The Sub feels to be of marginally higher quality. The bezel action is the best I've come across, and the winding action is buttery smooth. The movement keeps excellent time similar to the Speedy, but doesn't have the same level of magnetic resistance. Legibility is good, but not as good as the Speedy. I personally find the case on the Sub to be less attractive than the case of the Speedy, but I also prefer the case on the 14060 you're considering over the super case on my 114060. For some reason, I find that Rolex crystals tend to be smudge magnets, and find a frequent need to wipe the crystal while wearing them, whereas that isn't an issue with the Speedy or any other of my Omegas.

I bought both new from the same AD, and was able to obtain a small discount on the Speedy. Even with that discount, if I were to want to sell it today, I would end up losing money. I paid full retail for the Sub in 2019, and would have no problem selling it for a premium over what I paid. From a purely financial standpoint the Sub has turned out to be the better option, but that only matters if I were interested in selling either, which I'm not. Regardless, it's nice to know that a watch holds its value. It obviously depends on how good a deal you get when you buy the watch, but I suspect that the Rolex will likely hold value better than the Omega based on historical performance.

Chronographs are my favorite complication, so if I could only have one watch, and had to choose between the Speedy and the Sub, I think I'd go or the Speedy.

Best of luck in your decision- if you can afford them, I think they are both great choices.

·

16610 is a good choice. The subsequent 116610 case is too chunky imo.

·

I just got my 3861 at 18 last year! I think you’ll enjoy it a lot, I’ve had a lot of fun wearing it, it looks good with any strap, and the chrono function is cool!

·

You can't beat the history of the Speedmaster but if you only want a flex piece then the Subamariner will definitely scratch that itch.
