ISO a good field watch - Hamilton Khaki Field vs Seiko Alpinist?

I started collecting watches around 2 years ago. Initially, I bought everything I liked, but these days I tend to appreciate quality over quantity.

I usually opt for watches with different dial colors to add variation to my collection.

Now, I'm on the hunt for a good field watch. The only hesitation with the Seiko Alpinist is that I already have another Seiko in my collection.

It's a tough decision between the Seiko Alpinist and the Hamilton Khaki Field. I would wear either of them on a jubilee bracelet because I love the bold and eye-catching look.

The Hamilton is more suited for NATO straps, but I'm unsure about the Alpinist. One downside of the Alpinist for me is the rotating compass, which I think would be annoying despite loving its appearance.

Are there any other field watches you would recommend within the price range of $800 to $1200 USD?

Between these two would pick seiko but at that price range hamilton murph or expedition would be my choice

Seiko but I'd go for one of the Alpinist GMT 's, just prefer the looks

Had 4 Hamiltons,(2xKhaki king, X-wind automatic chronograph and the Murph)none lasted more than a few weeks due to legibility issues caused by the flat printed indices and lack of AR coating. Very frustrating!!

Yes, but $1500 USD for a Seiko Alpinist GMT is crazy.

·

What about the Seiko SSK 023? Based on the SRPG field watch with the added GMT.

·

I'd go for a Murph, and did. Great watch.

Buy used , I always do. Save money, buy a higher tier 😉👍🏻

·

Lorier Falcon and put the rest towards some sweet straps or another watch, or save $. $500US.

I’m biased :p

I would pick hamilton as it is historically known for its field watch. As well, the hamilton dial reflects the typical field watch aesthetic with the 24 hour inner track. Plus the double crown on the seiko is not to my taste. That's just me though since you asked. 😄

Good luck on your decision 🤗

I have both the Hamilton Khaki field auto and the alpinist without the rotating compass, the Hamilton is very comfortable in every situation, the Seiko is more robust and if we want to be picky, between the 2 slightly more "uncomfortable" for my small wrist . In any case they are both very versatile, with the Seiko you can also take a bath in complete safety having a resistance of 20Bar and the screw-down crown. Having both of them is perfection 😂

To be precise, the alpinist is not uncomfortable but thicker and therefore not very comfortable, for example if you wear a shirt. With €1300 you might be able to get them as a pair in some physical stores. At least in Turin in Italy you can do this combo

Go for the Alpinist

Love the green and gold Alpinist. Looks like yours lacks the cyclops? I would much prefer that.

Ive owned both, the Hamilton a few times in fact, and they never stayed long in the collection.

AR coating on Hamiltons at this price point is near non existent, and the glare on the crystal when outdoors made it very difficult to see the dial. May be a minor issue for you though.

The alpinist had its illegibility issues also. The black dial version has high polish hour markers which just disappear on the dial.

I would urge you to take a look at the Serica 6190. Chrinometer.

Dimension wise it's in a similar range (37.7mm wide, 10.4mm thick ans 20mm lug width). They're 990€ at retail so a bit more than the Seiko and Hamilton but you get COSC certified movement and 200m WR with a screw down crown, and im certainly enjoying mine. Also the case finishing is very impressive at this price point.

There are 3 dial versions and you can choose to have your crown at either 3 or 9 o'clock.

I also have a seiko 5 field gmt which im also enjoying. Its not as robust as the Hamilton or the Alpinist, and doesn't keep time particularly well, and is a little thick, but for around £400 it could certainly be an option for you. AND its a GMT.

My Hamilton Khaki Field Auto is my most worn watch ( has the scars to show it). There’s a reason why I’ve worn this one more than any other, it’s a solid yet stunning piece of kit 🔥

There are many field watch options in your price range. The Alpinist is built to be more durable IMO. You can find incredible field watches . This is an Unimatic with great specs and a solid build. Just one example

Have you considered the Vaer A5?

100m WR, screw-down crown, Miyota 9015, sapphire.

I went though that same thought process and I decided to pull the trigger on the Seiko Alpinist GMT despite the higher price over the Khaki as I prefer the look more.

·

I have the white dial alpinist and I have a khaki king. I love both for different reasons. I don't like that the water resistance level on my khaki king. I do like how thin it is but the lugs are a little longer so wrist size might be a factor to consider. I love everything about the Alpinist but the high polish. It looks more dressy than I'd like, but I love this watch. That said I think it is worth considering the Alpinist GMT and who cares if you have more than one Seiko. I have several. But to each their own. Watches that I feel may be relevant would be a Nivada Grenchen super antarctic there are a few variants of the dial whether you want arabics or not or and this is a little more expensive but hear me out...the Longines Zulu Timer GMT. I feel like that has a field watch look to it but that's my subjective view and that watch is a GMT and I believe it is chronometer spec but you'll have to double check that. The negative on that watch for me is the lug width. I don't understand why they went 19mm. For that reason I won't consider it. Oh another alternative check out Boldr watches they have some cool looking field watches. I hope I helped lol

·

You can't go wrong either one, both are well made watches that will serve you well and I think it comes down to which either fits your needs and wants best, the only somewhat true seiko field watch I have is my landshark and I will have a Hamilton by the end of this month

Yeah, love the look, but after 4 I've lost faith in the brand 😢

In owning both of these watches I’d go with a Rolex Explorer II

Let me first sell my kidney.

·
·

I‘d go for „why not both?“. The Hamilton‘s dial just seems a bit too busy for me and the Alpinist, altought it‘s one of my facorites, the Peospex logo destroys the dial.

·

I thought about buying the Hammy a couple times and tried it on but I didn’t like it enough to buy it. I have a green Alpinist and it might be my most favorite watch. The compass isn’t annoying. I think it’s a nice design element and I use it as a timer-move the orange North marker to the minute hand and start timing. The cathedral hands are nice and unique. The Hammy couldn’t be more plain Jane.

·

The cyclops stops me from selecting the Seiko right away.

·

Well, I don't like either. I just tried them today, but they're not my cup of tea. So, I am buying the DOXA 200 YELLOW and the Seiko Credo.

Owning an SPB121 I'm biased, but I my vote goes Alpinist. My friend has the Hamilton, and I think it looks great, but there is nothing about it that grabs my attention. I really enjoy the gilt numerals, markers and hands on my Alpinist. In low to extreme lighting situations it is always the most visible aspect on the Alpinist. Field watch look, or not, that glint of gold always brings a smile to my face.

If, on the other hand, you like the Hammy's conservative look, check out the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Spider. That one's a looker too!

Addendum: If you're a stickler for accuracy, the Seiko might frustrate you unless you get it regulated.

·

Between these 2, I'm not a fan of the #seiko alpinist so I would say stick to the #hamilton, the khaki field auto is a great choice!
