Curious what motivates your "next" watch purchase?

Are you celebrating a milestone of some sort?

Are you filling a gap in your collection? Maybe a color or style you don't have?

Are you climbing the ladder? Reaching for nicer and nicer watches as you progress through your career and collection?

I'm kind of all over the place as to my next purchase. I'm curious what drives your?

Hi. A very pertinent question for me anyway. I have this watch on preorder because I am retiring at the end of the year. https://www.magrette.com/shop/moana-pacific-waterman-gmt-bronze That’s one reason. The others are; it’s made/ designed in my country of New Zealand , I don’t have that case shape or bronze as a material and the design and functionality will hold me in good stead for any travel I may do. The water resistance and choices of straps help too. My purchases going forward will be to add what I don’t have re design and colour or to sell off those I want to replace with kind but better specifications. 👋

Sometimes I see a watch and it ignites a new search, "hey wow I didn't realize how beautiful Roman numerals can be, let me try to find just the right Roman numeral watch for me."

Other times I'll have a need in my life and that will send me on a hunt to find just the right watch for that. Like, "hey now I have a dog, and the dog needs to be walked at night, and my current watches don't work like I want for that, what can I find that is perfectly suited."

Veeeery rarely I'll see a watch and think, "I must have THAT specific watch!"

For whatever reason I don't really do milestones, ladder climbing, or even gap filling for the sake of gap filling.

I got a watch on my wedding day and every anniversary since. The biggest benefit now is it forces me to be very deliberate since I limit myself to one watch a year. 7 months to go and down to my top 3 already 😅.

FOMO

·

Compulsion.

·

My youngest kid will graduate from university and start his career in one year’s time, which means I will no longer be financially responsible for kids.

No better excuse to buy a nice watch, is there?😎

·

My wife giving me the o.k. 🤣

·

If I like it and I can afford it, it's mine! 🤣

·
  1. Long-time wants (Tudor 1926, Omega SMP, Baltic MR01, Hamilton Jazzmaster Openheart)

  2. Milestones (his & hers Hamilton Boultons, Panerai Luminor)

  3. "Gaps" in the collection (Vario Trench, Farer Eddington Moonphase, Citizen Tsuki-yomi Atomic Time)

  4. Oooh shiny (Tudor BB, Tag Heuer Carrera Chrono Glassbox)

  5. Colors (Davosa Newton Pilot Green, Seiko Presage Sharp Edge Crimson)

In other words, I have lots of reasons 😂

·

I keep a list and buy when the right opportunity presents itself. Sometimes new watches enter the list.

·

I kind of tried some milestones and such, it’s not for me. Whenever I get the bug and have the dough!

·

I haven’t a clue yet.

·

My next watch will be for a meaningful life milestone later this year.

·

I have bought one or two watches every years since 2020. Now it's only going to be for milestones and the next one isn't for three years. I'd like to be buying better, but if I'm being a responsible person then a Nomos is probably the highest the budget can /should go. There'll be time for higher tier watches when I'm old.

Boredom, mostly

I am heading to Japan this summer to celebrate my 50th birthday and while there I am hoping to acquire a watch to both celebrate my 50th birthday and my move to Vietnam.

I do have a Seiko GMT on its way, I think, that was bought off a whim.

After these two acquisitions I may not be acquiring another for quite awhile. Besides I only have a 6 watch box and after this summer I will have 6 watches, including my Apple Watch.

·

I want to add a moon phase watch to the collection.

·

The thing with me is: Once I experienced the "nice side" of watches with GS I really and unfortunately don't wear my other watches that often. I shift back to GS after two to three days max.

To answer the question: I'm saving up for a beautiful SLGH017. Should I reach that goal in the near future I will have three or four watches: A 9F in the SBGN003, a 9R in the SBGA211 and, hopefully, a 9S in the SLGH017 (and I think I will still habe my SBSA57 from Japan).

That would make a mighty fine collection (for me, personally).

·

My next watch (if nothing happens) will be my favorite chronograph (with a terrestrial price). I’m currently saving. Maybe something happens and I have and excuse to buy it and make it more special

·

There is no plan, no rhyme nor reason for me to buy a watch.

I am waiting for the Möels 369 to arrive. I purchased it because it was another unique and interesting design with great specs at a great price. It will slip into a unique place in my collection. The company is run by wonderful people which made my first purchase of the Möels 528 a fantastic experience.

And that’s how I decided to buy my next watch.

Respect, you are very disciplined 🤜🤛

I'm trying to do a one purchase a year for my Birthday. A second purchase is only allowed for a Milestone or maybe for a watch deal that is too good to pass on. Helps me choose the watch that I really love from the ones that I only like. So its a Max of 2 watches a year.

Very smart strategy 🤜🤛

·

The next big purchase for me is either a Junghans Max Bill or a Glashütte Original. Something German. But I'm also thinking of Santos de Cartier, which is not German but equally coveted.

·

I have my sights set on a Panerai submariner carbon but life needs to happen for while...

I don't think that's what it's actually called...

This is it...

No special reason; I just want the blue PRX in 35mm because it would bring some sportyness and color to my modest collection. Only waiting to finally have saved enough money for it 🤭

·

I always need another watch. I wish if I could regulate it with some kind of rule. There is always hot discussions in my mind.

·

Watch collecting is a new hobby for me. I started with Seiko and in particular, Seiko dive watches for their beauty to me and utility. My next watch will be a Tudor most likely as I start to branch out. I came into this hobby after years of collecting firearms. My favorites were based on my preferred designer, John Moses Browning so all my handguns are 1911’s in .45 acp. Rifles were pre-1964 Winchester bolt and lever actions. Seiko watches are some of the most prolific and industry leading designs with calibers that are in-house designs that are also sold to outside manufacturers. Tudor seems to offer some unique designs of their own outside of Rolex that intrigue me. This watch hobby is a lot of fun.

·

I dont really have a watch that I want right now and dont know where to go really. Climbing the ladder is pointless. The price point that I usually shop has nothing that grabs me.

Guess I enjoy my collection.
