Watch theft in Germany is a thing now

Apparently, watch theft is now also an issue in Germany. I just read about two cases in Munich. This is actually one of the safest big cities in Germany, but apparently a 22-year-old Thai millionaire had a Richard Mille RM55 White Legend worth €400,000 ripped off his wrist in the middle of the day on Maximilian Street, a well known luxury shopping street.

The perpetrator escaped but was caught on surveillance cameras and identified. Apparently it is an internationally known and professional pickpocket who has already struck in several European countries. He is now to be sought with an international arrest warrant.

This is the second case in Munich within two weeks. Already at the end of June, a man had his Richard Mille worth €140,000 ripped off his wrist and the perpetrator escaped unrecognized as a socialite on a motor scooter. This type of theft with motor scooters was previously only known from Italy or England but not in peaceful Bavaria.

If I were going to be a watch thief I’d steal Rolexes or Pateks. I’ve got too much taste to steal an RM.

·

Its not related in any way, but seeing 22 years old and millionare in the same sentence hit me right in the feels😄

On the same note, I cant feel sorry for someone whose boastful enough to casually wear an equivalent of several homes on his wrist.

Unfortunately, thieves will travel anywhere for their victims. I found Munchen beautiful and safe during my numerous visits - shame this is happening.

Absolutely! But how many Rolex do you need to get 400k?

There is a line from a german rap crew that descriped it pretty well so far:

„München ist so sicher, hier können besoffene Frauen nachts nackt U-Bahn fahren.“

Or in english:

„munich is so safe, drunk women can ride the subway naked at night“

Dammit!! I was never fortunate enough to have witnessed that on the U-Bahn! 😝🤙❤️

I don't know which part is crazier, a 22-year-old with a watch like that or the fact that it was stolen from him in Munich.

·

Yeah I feel safe with my omega and breitling in munich and there is a fuckload of rolexes around here. But wearing a RM in t-shirt is funking stupid. The guy was definitely targeted has you said. Hope for him he is insured still. We can't wish to be robbed to anybody even somebody who can afford to be robbed.

·

Oh wow, both to a 22 year old millionaire and the RM being stolen in Munich!

I’d be so classy it wouldn’t matter.

On second thought, maybe I’d only steal RM. Then I’d have a YouTube channel of me just smashing them. Sure, I’d make less money, but knowing I was riding the world of such dumb watches would be worth it.

Sounds like a legit business plan.

As i ll never will own such a investment, i m feeling pretty sure. My most expensive one is a 1k seiko monster. And if a pickpocket try to steal it from me he has to go through a hard and bloody fight

Youd get my subscription for sure😄

I think stealing ultra luxury items is pretty much snitching on your self. Not many owns a RM especially that model. Let alone selling the watch it would have to be for half pennies on the dollar since there's no box or papers. servicing the watch will pretty much say it was stolen. Someone buying the watch for 100k will still raise flags thinking is fake and taking to RM to get it validated will just get the seller arrested.

·

Sad to hear about it. My plan is Berlin. I hope that city is safer. But I have no Richard Mille so maybe I have a free pass.

It’s sad to say that a 22 old man deserves to get mugged for what having money or wearing a ridiculous watch. No one deserves that in my opinion ever. There’s no difference between your car being stolen or house being broken into, except you get the bonus of being accosted. It’s sucks, it hurts and it’s not right!

I couldn’t agree more, but I’m struggling to find where somebody said he deserved to be mugged.

And I can joke because it’s not my property that was stolen. Were I this gentleman, I’m sure I wouldn’t think it was funny at all. Also, I’d be asking myself what it was about the RM I found attractive in the first place.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If I had that much cash I’d probably be the target market for an RM. Perhaps it’s kitsch, but who is really the arbiter of style these days…

·

What a shame this is pretty much unheard of in the past. I was an exchange student in the 1980's and you didn't have to lock anything up. In fact the biggest problem for me was the dialectic german spoken everywhere while having to deal with the proper educational language.

Now I’m interested in visiting Munich. I want to see the subways. 😂

·

I feel like the headline should be "RM theft is a thing everywhere"

Not sure this is a typical "watch theft"

It doesn’t, nor should it, mean anything to anyone else that I think RM makes really stupid watches. So if you get $400k and that’s where you want to spend it, I’d only have one question. Do you love that watch? If you do, then get it, wear it, enjoy it.

·

Sad to read sheet like this is going on.

·

RMs are definitely attention grabbers. Like others here, I’ve been to Munich countless times and always felt very safe with my Rolex Datejust.

·

Very sad to hear about this. I was surprised even in Tokyo, Japan where literally you can leave your wallet or iphone in the taxi and generally it makes its way back to you, now some guys were robbed violently last year, and just this year alone we had at least 4 watch shops have smash and grabs. Something unheard of literally. So far they have all be captured however.

·

Germany is still super safe. I was a victim of an attempted mugging in Leipzig about 10 years ago. Two young guys tried to drag me off a tram after a very late night/early morning. I managed to hold onto the tram doors long enough the driver got pissed off and their security called the police. In the end the 2 muggers, the security guard, and myself were asked to walk to the local police station to sort out the dispute - which we all duly did! It was the most polite, disappointing, and incredibly German attempt at a street robbery. Nobody got hurt and nothing was stolen.

People just don’t seem to be violently motivated in DE.

·

Crazy. I definitely second guess myself when wearing an expensive watch in big cities

But I usually do it anyway and just make sure it’s not a Rolex as they are specifically targeted by thieves.

Most theives prob wouldn’t steal an RM. they look like plastic watches to an untrained eye.

Can you tell I don’t get that brand?

Theft is really getting out of hand, just a few weeks ago someone stole my fathers daytona, fortunately he is ok, but gosh! I found a platform that was made to report stolen watches, it’s called JoinTrack.org I hope this helps a bit.
