It's a garbage watch but I love it so much

This is my 1980 Seiko Type II Quartz QGP171.

So this was the quartz piece of junk that I acquired 2 months ago. The seller told me it just needed a battery change, but it turned out the movement was in dire need of repair. 😭 It was a headache, and I had to send the watch for repair twice.

Now it runs just fine! I'm having fun because of its tiny size and great looks when paired with a leather strap. My next goal is to polish the acrylic crystal with some Polywatch.

Would you keep a crummy old quartz in your collection?

100%, that watch has invaluable character. Not many things make you feel like you're stepping back in time, this defintely looks like it does that.

My parents gave me a batch of their watches from the 80s and 90s to repair and I had so much fun just handling them and admiring the wear on them. I even kept one, a Tissot quartz Seastar dual tone. Worth much? No. Special? Yes!

Smart looking watch and to tonmed’s point, it has character.

·

You have history with it and you love it, what else is there?

·

i think after you repaired it, its not a junk anymore. and if you take care of it and love it then it is deserved some space in your collection. and i really appreciated it you take care of this seiko, well done

·

Yes…this crummy old quartz I’ll keep for a while…

It’s super smart! Wear it with relish! Because of this post, I‘m going to wear my 1985 Seiko today.

Tbh im in a phase with that case atm. Looking through options with 7s26 or older movement similar cases as yours to transfer my favorite seiko 5 dial and upgrade it with an nh36 movement. Lovely watch there, and a bit in envy here while looking forward to having my own soon!

·

What on earth makes it crummy now it's fixed?? It's lovely! Gorgeous blue dial vintage Seiko, what's not to love?

Exhibit A, dates from 1986, recent new battery and strap in my collection.  "Crummy old quartz "🤣🤣👍

·

Of course you should keep something you love, why even ask others what they think?

·
·

Absolutely. There are no garbage Seikos. Lol

·

💯% Yes! It's a really nice watch!

·

If it’s story or design particularly appealed to me, then sure!

Otherwise - nope 👎

The weirdos in my collection (both automatics) are old family watches that I keep for sentimental reasons

(Not the seiko - the 1950 Vadis and ‘34 Rolex)

I agree, watches from loved ones always carry memories more precious than what the watch is worth. Though this Seiko piece is just a lucky vintage find that I plan to use as a project watch. Maybe its worth as a sentimental piece is for the future generation to decide? 🤣

Would love to see that Tissot Seastar!

You’re right, I did do some legwork to get this thing working. Time to make more memories with it!

Nobody would ever call that crummy! The Cartier Santos is beautiful.

Exactly the point! The cool thing about these common vintage watches is how easy it is to turn them into project watches. There’s a lot of these things floating around to choose from. You’ll definitely find the parts you’re looking for!

Thanks! I’m glad there are people who appreciate what Seiko has done in one of its most affordable watches.

A crummy old Seiko quartz with classy croc strap, that’s exactly the vibe I’m going for! Love these vintage watch sizes.

Feels good to be validated by the Seiko catalog! Even if it is the cheapest watch on the list hahaha!

Amazing work, now that’s a real project watch! I love that style of case with the raised bezel. And the patina’d look on the dial is spot on!

I've already polywatched both of them - both had insanely cloudy crystals when I was given them.

I'm currently debating taking them in for servicing to further 'clean up' at an antique watch repair shop.

Good ol' acrylic, perfectly easy to maintain with a bit of Polywatch.

I would definitely take them to a repair shop for service. Those watches deserve it!
