Long term travel!

This is my first post on WC so I’ll start off by saying hi! I’ve been into watches for the last 6 years but have been trying to build a concise, balanced collection of mechanical watches for the last year.

I’ve been working for the past 8 years (since I was 16) in the drinking water treatment industry. Recently I feel like my career has plateaued and my girlfriend and I have taken it as a good opportunity to fulfill a massive personal goal of going travelling for a few years. We have managed to achieve a good level of financial stability to be able to go for a while and we intend to buy a camper van and travel around Europe for a while before potentially heading to British Columbia Canada sometime in 2025.

We intend to leave in March next year so naturally I am already contemplating which watch I should bring on such an adventure?! I’m thinking potentially a G-Shock or perhaps my Sinn 104.

My question to you is that if you were embarking on the same adventure, what watch from your collection would you take?

P.S It can only be 1

Welcome to the crunch!

Either on of my Duro’s👍🏻

Since leaving the US and moving to the UK I’ve worn my Explorer everywhere I’ve gone. Most of the time I wear a black NATO for comfort and “stealth” while traveling abroad. It’s the perfect GADA watch that has been on my wrist while backpacking, cliff diving, climbing and getting engaged. It’s just a little piece of steel that tells the time but I can’t go anywhere without it.

Choose the one that fits your needs and enjoy your travels.

If it really is just one, I’d take my Zelos Mako V3

Image

It’s capable. 300m water resistance and screw down crown. Also well built with sapphire Crystal. It is thin and small (11.5mm thick and 40mm case) enough to be able to dress it up if need be.

It is already my GADA, so I’d bring that!

·

#welcome. Nice watch

·

Depends where I was travelling to, how long and what I would do during my travels. Going to risk areas or going to be doing sports or swimming/diving G-shock

How long was that ago may I ask? Often I really think my BB36 could be that watch for me as there’s something nice about having 1 watch to take through life with you (which was the original reason I bought my first mechanical watch).

I see from your page it looks like you have a 2 watch collection, a daily and a beater. Are you looking to add anything?

I moved over here about a year and a half ago for work but I’ll be going back to the States soon.

I’ve got a few other watches but nothing as valuable as my Explorer. As far as adding to the collection, I probably can’t justify any more big purchases for a few years (wedding, car repairs, home renovations, etc). I’ve got a Mission to Uranus that’s pretty fun to wear around the house so maybe I’ll add to the MoonSwatch collection or pick up a cheap Hamilton Khaki Field (my dream watch since I was in high school) but nothing expensive unless I win the lottery.

I would take my Omega Seamaster 300 vintage because that is the only watch that reminds me of my life before marriage, children, mortgages and old age. It is not the original but one that I picked up 5 years ago to try to recall simpler times. Good luck on your adventure. We have friends in BC but I have not visited in many years.

I’m just wrapping up a 2 month trip where I really only wore one of the two watches I brought. A Seamaster 300 heritage in blue with 3 straps (factory bracelet that was work least, omega mesh worn 49% of the time, tan omega nato worn 49% of the time) I could and probably will go years with just this one watch. I’ve already sold off all my others but 2 and am actively looking to unload those next.

This watch did everything from hikes to black tie dinners to off shore fishing and plenty of ocean and pool time.

·

Wow! Great start! 😎

There’s only one choice me for the lifestyle you are suggesting: my Christopher Ward C60 Trident GMT.

It’s has the second hour hand which is handy for traveling; 600 meter water resistance with screw down crown which is gods for any beach/water activities; toolless micro adjustment clasp; sapphire crystal and all steel; just enough polished edges to dress up and 12mm thick so ok when dressed up.

If we’re going by Highlander rules, there’s no doubt in my mind it’ll be one of my Casios, CasiOak or SGW.

Would have to go with my orient ray 2 .

·

I'll probably get roasted for this...

I'd choose the Code, but don't feel comfortable swimming in it (my issue I suppose).

Congrats and have fun on your adventure OP, that's my favorite Tudor and and I'd bring it.

·

Would like to say the Blackbay 36 but would go with the Seamaster.

It's small unobtrusive and boomprof, will fly under the radar compared with the larger version and with a few QR straps will fit in any situation. The independent hour hand is great for travelling.

·

What you have is perfect for such an adventure! For me, it would be my Explorer 2. :)

·

Bring 'em all! 😜 You'll never know when you will be missing a particular piece for the occasion at hand.

Welcome!

From my current assortment, probably the Zulu Time. If I just get to choose any watch, maybe the white gold Patek 5524g Pilot Travel Time.

·

For such an adventure I'd be tempted to only bring a G-Shock, probably a square. It's not too big, it's lightweight, comfortable and tough as nails! It doesn't dress up, though, so that's an aspect to consider.

·

My daily watch is the black BB36. It's a simple, versatile companion. Bring a couple different strap/bracelet options and you should be good to go.

·

Welcome to Watch Crunch!

I’ll take my BB58 everywhere I go

I wouldn’t take anything like a G-Shock on a long trip when you can bring a beauty like the Tutor on your wrist photo

You know I think the place you’re at with watches is ultimate peace, to be able to have one watch that you love and have attachment to and never worry about whether it’s appropriate. I think we often disguise needing multiple watches for different scenarios as a way to just buy stuff.

I think regardless of what I decide I will be chucking a square in the glove box 😉

Truth. If you can get to one watch, then that's the ultimate zen. I often bring just one watch when I vacation, and it's nice not having any sort of decision fatigue each day (or multiple times per day). You experience everything wearing the one watch, and associate many more memories with it.

Good call ;)
