Affordable Chronographs

Hello Crunchers,

Here are two nice looking affordable chronographs.

The new Islander Bridgehampton Racing Chronograph vs the Lorier Gemini. These chronographs have the same Seagull 1901 movement. The price is also similar; the Islander at $469 vs the Lorier at $499.

Which one would you choose?

They both look great! The Islander speaks to me a bit more due to the blue accents & overall sportier look.

·

My eye has been on the Lorier for months (I also own a Falcon and an Astra). However, Lorier have been out of stock for awhile and, based on an email I received from them, are going to hold a lottery for the last batch of this model in May (they are discontinuing it, and replacing it with a new three subtitle version in the future). So, not counting on being lucky enough in the lottery to wait, this Islander really appealed to me and I ordered one (white dial, as pictured) right away. I had also been looking for an attractive racing inspired mechanical watch and this Bridgehampton filled that need easily. I like the Seagull ST1901 movement (it's in my Red Star 1963) and am looking forward to the Islander's arrival next week.

This is sporty vs classy

·

Lorier is a more exciting brand to me, personally.

·

I'd prefer the Lorier between the two.

However, I would recommend saving up to buy a better mechanical chronograph movement. The ST1901 (AKA Venus 175) is an OK movement, but you are gambling when you buy one unless the brand really tests the movements out before casing them.

Don't take my word for it, you can hear any number of very knowledgeable watch collectors and dealers tell you the same thing. The ST1901 is a crap shoot at best and will not likely last very long if used frequently. Then there will not be anyone to fix them when they break. It is essentially a disposable mechanical chronograph movement.

For about double the price, you can pick up a proper automatic chronograph by Tissot on Jomashop like this...

Lorier definitely

·

The Lorier gets my vote

·

Bulova Lunar Pilot instead! 😜👍🏻

·

In this case the Islander appeals to me more because of the following:

  1. Still has a Tachymeter scale.

  2. More color choices

  3. Better graduations on the bezel.

·

I would go for the Islandet but the black dial version

·

Prefer the Islander - handset suits the type of watch better and sportier bezel. Nice blue hands on sub-dials. Both are nice but Islander looks really good.

·

At this price point (my personal comfort zone) I prefer a quartz movement in a chronograph. This complication would be very expensive to service. With a quartz you only have the small sub dial for running seconds and don’t notice the dead beat motion.

This one is really really good!

·

Would you consider the seagull 1963?

Im with what @ChronoGuy said!

I’ve heard/read too many bad things about this movement. Neither Islander or Lorier does anything special to test them at this price point. I’m a huge fanboy of both Islander and Lorier, but pass ✌️

·

I just got a #lorier this last week. It’s one of the most comfortable watches I’ve owned. It’s sharp too. Either choice is great.

·

Neither. I have my Grail chrono, the Bulova Lunar Pilot. But if forced to choose, probably the islander. Marc needs to fix his lighting

·

Prefer the cleaner look of the Lorier

·

Both are nice but seem high in price to me. Subjective, of course, some ppl think thats a value for a handwind mechanical watch.

·

The Islander is a Chronograph — the Lorier lacks a Tachy, and is essentially just a watch with a stopwatch. (So… still a Chronograph, but less tools.) Aside from that, they are both much of a muchness, even in looks, and both have the ‘second time zone’ bezel, though the Islanders is easier to use. The Lorier looks better, just, by being minimalistic in comparison, but at the cost of functionality. It also has the nicer name and logo, whereas the Islander has the charisma of Marc behind it.

Both out of NYC too I think.

Not a lot between it, but if it was me (and no other choice available) I would go with the Islander.

·

Lorier for me, the Islander is nice too!

I agree... to an extent. I've had two watches with the ST19, and they both broke within a month after regular use. I also suggest going Swiss (77xx) or Japanese (NE88).

All that said, Marc mentioned in the recent AMA that he paid extra for better assembly and more testing for the ST19. Based on my good experiences/service with Long Island Watch, I'd be willing to try out their new model.

The Lorier is more classically handsome to me, but I like my 12 hour bezel to have more numerals present.

By the way, you have some amazing chronographs!

One vote for the Islander. I prefer the baton hands over the dauphine hands. The more liberal use of blue adds visual interest, too. Judging by reviews, the lume is better on the Islander which also has a lumed bezel insert. Normally I prefer a 24-click bezel like the Lorier’s for a dual-time insert, but the Long Island YouTube video points out a clever way to use the Bridgehampton’s 120-click bezel to serve an elapsed hour function. One big difference is the Islander’s sapphire crystal. I’d only go for a more scratch prone acrylic crystal if you’re very into the vintage thing. The Bridgehampton’s more conventional lug length means it looks much better on a strap (it comes with both a bracelet and a leather racing strap). Finally, Marc at Long Island watch has done a lot for the watch enthusiast community, so it’s nice to do business with someone like that. He’s also known to back his products with good customer service.

Ah, great to hear Marc going the extra. I vaguely recall that he was not a fan of the base movement on a older video.

·

I prefer the Lorier

Lorier is easier to read. The time is easier to read, and at the end of the day..... That's what a watch is for.

I have 3 ST19's and all three are perfect, keep perfect time and I got no problem being proud of them. I'd recommend them all day long.

I've been waiting for the Lorier to get back in stock so that sucks to hear.
