Do you like fauxtina (usually Old Radium Superluminova)?

How do you feel about this common technique to make a new watch look vintage? I hate it, but I see such watches are quite common, so I guess many people like them. I want to know how many! :-)

I voted no, but in the watch in the picture it fits.

Love it

Tho it's only a colour it looks more appropriate on vintage style watches.

But when they were new the color was actually white. :-) The lume used in the past aged over time, which is no longer the case.

I like it when done well, Baltic do a few which look great IMHO.

Looks good on this one

Vintage inspired modern watch

·

Yes.

But I don’t see it as artificial aging, just a choice to mute down the contrast.

·

It depends on the total design of the watch.

·

It has it's place

Most times I just don’t feel like I like Fauxtina. I’ve owned a couple pieces with it and I just can’t bond with it really. I think the idea is neat, but I say let a modern watch be modern!

·

Love it: Tudor (Pelagos LHD or BB Pro) Mostly an off-white cream color

Hate it: Omega or Panerai (new black Speedmaster’57) Really dark and aged

·

It depends on the design. An omega aquaterra with faux patina? No thanks. A vintage inspired military watch? Hell yes!

·

Voted no.

I prefer aged tritium better. HOWEVER I do see why some do it, I mean old tritium is totally useless, but you can actually see fauxtina in the dark. The thing is, older watches, they changed with you, meanwhile new ones with fauxtina is Murphy lab at gibson... It doesn't matter how convincing it is, it's still fake...

·

As of now, love it. In a few years, well tastes can change…

·

I don’t have a preference and I’m not sure it you can call it fauxtima any more. I think it’s so pevalent now it’s just another color or shade option to add depth or contrast and lumination to a watch. Like it or hate it’s here to stay just like escape valves or 4 o’clock date wheels.

·

It's especially egregious when there are stark white elements to contrast with the stoopit beige fauxtina. I have a watch like this. I wish I could fix that aspect.

I think this dial is sexy as hell with the cream colored lume. Do I consider it “fauxtina”? No, it’s off white. If it was bright white it wouldn’t work. This dial (and the black version) is all about subtlety, not harsh contrast. Should I start calling the silver hands on my speedy “Rhodiumtina”? What about the “swordtina” hands on the NTTD Seamaster? That watch is a beautiful shade of chocolate brown BTW not “tropical black”.

If I could figure out which YouTube “influencer” came up with the buzzword “fauxtina” I would send them a box of off white glitter.

·

I hate the name fauxtina. I think it's just a different color. I know it's meant to evoke ... bla... bla but in reality it's just a different color. Sometimes I like color and sometimes I don't.

Certina use brown and turquoise on their Titanium diver for example. If one is fauxtina then the other is what?

And I thought I was the only one... thank you 🙏

It’s either Bluetina or Turqtina. 😂

Fauxtina in terms of watches is just a colored lume. That's totally fine. They still look brand new, it's just vintage styling. When they're starting to pre-scratch the watch in the factory, that's where I'll draw my line (looking at you Gibson Murphy Labs).

Murphy Labs is different. They're actually chiseling wood and paint out of the guitar. Fauxtina lume is the equivalent of using cream colored pickguard. I never want to see the time when watches come "pre-beat up" from the factory.

OK fine XDDDDDDD, you have a point, how about VOS then?

Also, I reckon that Doxa Cuttler sub is very close to Murphy lab imo.

What's VOS? Vintage old stock? Personally, unless the watch itself is rare, I couldn't care less. The dings, bursts and cowboy boots on my watch/guitar is supposed to be MY own experience with the thing, my own "story". I don't want some unknown person's "story" on it (unless it was owned by someone special), let alone an artificial one. The problem with Murphy Lab (to me) is that the scratches and dents are meaningless, and thus have absolutely zero value to me.

The Cussler sub is on the same vein. I hated it when I saw it. But.... here's the thing, isn't it supposed to mimic some famous person's watch? It's like Fender releasing the EVH® Striped Series Frankenstein™ "Frankie". It's supposed to be beat up, it's a collectible. So, I can live with the Doxa existing. Will I ever buy it? No, I don't even know who Clive Cussler is.

In fact, I disdain fake aging so much, when I made my tribute EVH Eruption black & white striped guitar, I made it so it looks as fresh as Eddie's first finished it. It's still faithful to the original, as that state existed, albeit briefly.

You know I actually do like the look of that Doxa, it just spoke, no, shouted "ADVENTURE!" to me. The funny thing is, even tho I love that look on that Doxa, generally speaking, I can't stand fauxtina XDDD

Also, as with my guitars, all of my guitars have genuine wear and tear by me, or my previous owner(s), as it should be.

Sometimes the color just works, forget that it’s ‘faux’
