Thoughts on Victorinox?

I saw a co worker wearing a Victorinox watch the other day. Clean look, and it seemed like a solid piece as far as quality. What’s everyone‘s opinion on Victorinox? I don’t really see it getting much love in the watch community.

I think they’re great. I’ve got 2 of them. My titanium I.N.O.X

Which as well as looking and feeling great goes through so many tests that it rivals g-shocks for toughness.
And my mechanical Alliance

Nowhere near as tough but a very nice looking watch.

Love the dial on the Alliance!

Oh I had a really nice 39mm stainless steel Vic back in the 90's I finally wore it to death. Put it away and haven't able to fine it since. I think about it frequently!

·

The Alliance one also has a nice movement inside ETA2892. And you can find that under 400 if you look very hard and get into sales. I think that is a bargain. I am also highly intrigued by I.N.O.X. V like a women version of a bigger brother.

I think Victorinox offer great value, but the brand does seem to get overshadowed in the sub-$1,000 range. I've looked at a few, but have yet to fall in love with any Victorinox watches.

·

I love mine but I tend to forget to wear it, it’s Swiss army back then… I think my watch is maybe 15+ years old 🤔

Nice watch. Tough, for some model it is G-Shock tough even so yeah, really good watch.

Though I didn't know when Victorinox took over from Wenger as the face of Swiss Army watch. When did that happen?

·

Wow, I had to dig into my box for this one. I was given this 30 (!) years ago as part of a team building event at my work.  It was a daily wear to work for a while, but the blue on the bezel didn’t hold up, so went in the box. I still put it on for casual wear (read, playing with grandkids). Kind of a weathered old man now - the watch, that is - but it still keeps great time.

Never had an issue with my Victorinox Ambassador.  It was my first automatic watch:

@Ichibunz looks like we have a friend in common…just in different color ways.

·

Yes, I'm seriously looking at an INOX Diver as a Christmas pressie to myself. Quite big, so you probably need the wrists for it.

Wenger was almost bankrupt in 2005 when Victorinox took it over to keep production of their knives and watches in Swiss hands.  Wenger’s knife business shrank appreciably after 9-11 when passengers were no longer allowed to carry pocketknives onto aircraft, and the company was a fraction of the size of Victorinox.

I haven't got one, but there seems a little bit more thought on individual design than by other brands at that price point.

That’s awesome!

I received this Victorinox for my 15th Anniversary at work.  I'm there 28 years now.  I wore it every day for years until I had to get it serviced.  It has worked ever since and probably the most well built watch in my collection.  The only thing I don't like about it is it's not a Timex.  lol.

Honestly, I don’t remember I think it’s 40mm ??… and thanks it’s is nice watch just feel bad I don’t get to wear it often…

·

I like them a lot. I have been wearing my Maverick quite a bit lately. I like the Victoronix brand and the Wenger brand. They hold up and wear comfortable. I have learned that with the two brands you have to make sure that you get the models with the Ronda 5 jewels mechanism running them. The lower quality 1 jewel I have been having problems with. The coils in them go out. They are fairly easy to fix yourself. I only have to take out 2 screws to replace them. Also the time changing gears on the stem wear out making it impossible to adjust the time. Other than that I really like them and have a nice little collection.

·

My dad loves them so much, he has 4 of them (Yellow, Green, Red and Blue faces)...

·

I believe it's a 42mm.

·

I have one and I like it a lot.

·

I love them! Here’s my first mechanical watch, a #victorinox ChronoPro I bought for a few hundred dollars in the early 2000s…

Still runs great! Some things I learned:

  1. The finishing and movement (7750) punched way above the price.
  2. It keeps great time
  3. The black pushers are poorly designed and a common failure point.
  4. Movement can be serviced just about anywhere. If you need anything else fixed (like the pushers or crown), it’s probably going back to the factory.
  5. Victorinox has been slow to adapt its design language to the current aesthetic.
  6. It‘s easy to get hands-on with their inexpensive quartz pieces and relatively hard to find their nicer pieces in person at retailers.
  7. It’s hard to compete with Hamilton in the same market segment.
·

I love the look of Victorinox watches. I own an Infantry GMT quartz. I would have many more if they would build smaller case sizes, as many of their offerings seem to be in the 42-45mm range. The second they build a 38mm chrono, I'll be all over it.

·

They’re a knife maker and their watch designs look highly amateurish. Yet the price is justified in my opinion. I wouldn‘t buy or wear one though…

Yes they do make knives too. and other stuff. Mind you so does Cartier and Bulgari and Hemes.

·

I'd buy an inox if I thought I could pull it off. The gravedigger one.

Love my Air Boss with 7750 - It's a strap monster and great value. I had a couple of basic Swiss Army field watches back in the day. One stopped after falling from the second floor onto a tile floor. But the crystal was fine... 🤣

They didn't really take over. Both have been the swiss army watch since the beginning (Victorinox guy was the first if I remember correctly) and eventually recently Victorinox bought them out.

·

The designs never appealed to me and the price is far too high in my opinion. I'd much rather a citizen at that price.

·

I have one that I don't wear much, mostly because I can never tell what kind of watch it wants to be.  Is it a sport watch, field watch, dress(y) watch?

I do like the chunky (and heavy) bracelet though.  I bought it from a co-worker who got it as an anniversary gift at his prior employer, so it has "General Dynamics - Advanced Information Systems" engraved on the caseback.  Which makes it a Swiss Army watch with the name of an American defense contractor engraved on it... hmmm 😕
