Love this guy's unique and very "British" sense of humor! Very entertaining and informative ๐Ÿ˜€ The "Monty Python" of Ewe-Tube watch reviewers! ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ˜Ž

ยท

Hrs a distinctive character in a sea of sameness. Very much an alternative reviewer but well informed and a true enthusiast. Oh and of course very British!

ยท

Ewwww. I hate screaming over the top attention seekers, who produce ADHD videos.

Britt Pearce, Teddy, Max, Adrian for me. Thx.

There's room for all of them! He's an alternative! His sense of humour appeals to me and lots of others it seems. But I get it, he's not for everyone..

Hey, speaking as a YT creator and and as a human being who was raised right, dial back the negativity.

Russell is a real person. Heโ€™s a member of this forum. Show some civility. Show some class.

โ€œHateโ€?

If itโ€™s not to your taste, fine. Lots of other videos out there. And youโ€™re welcome to say so. But find some tact.

I think he strikes a nice balance of being entertaining while being informative. If you prefer less sugar with your medicine, so be it.

But what do you want, your free back?

Yeah that's fair. I'd guess he appeals to the younger Tiktok crowd.

ยท

The faces are too silly to get me to ever click on the videos ๐Ÿ˜‚ just being honest. Maybe Iโ€™ll check some out, seems like lots of people like him.

I like him and I'm 51. To each their own.

I originally thought that too but then watched one of his reviews and was pleasantly surprised. I now watch most of his new videos (and some previous ones). Nice mix of humour and watch review.

ยท

I am 65 and don't suffer fools - but I'll take Russell over most of these talking heads on YT. At least he has a certain charm and some wit about him.

ยท

Top bloke , seems like a legit nice person who is down to earth.

I hope his channel gets big so he can buy something fancy one day :)

ยท

Good content, annoying style, but that's just me. I wish he'd tune down the shouting. Ben, Teddy and Jodi are my favourites

ยท

You know whoโ€™s my fav right now!! @Max ๐Ÿ˜œโ€ฆ ok can I get a free swag ๐Ÿ˜‚!! Yourterrific is pretty funny, I have the same sense of humor โ€ฆ dark!! HahHa

ยท

Definitely like the Mad Watch Collector, keep up the good work! This is supposed to be a fun hobby after all.

ยท

I'm 52, English and do enjoy MWC, love Carlos Santana & Mr Pagani ๐Ÿ˜‚ have me and my Mrs in stitches. He paid a big part of opening up the watch world to unpretentious types.

Also enjoy IDGuy, Adrian, Jody, Pete McConvill (apologies for probably spelling that wrong) , obviously Andrew and Watchfinder...

Absolutely cannot stand Nico or that sweary Australian twot. Two folks I'd happily smack in the chops ๐Ÿ˜‚

ยท

He tends to misrepresent watches he does not actually know about which is irritating. Call him on it and he is a patronizing ass. Much prefer Ben's Watch Club.

ยท

I like a bit of silly humor with my watch content. Variety is good. Thank goodness all watch YT content isn't stuffy investors calculating the value proposition and profit potential of the latest Rolex and AP releases.

ยท

Love Russell! I look forward to every post! Keep on keeping on, @MWC2020 !

ยท

Love his channel:)

Iโ€™m 62 and like him . He is just trying to give a bit of fizz in a flat serious space โ€ฆ.

ยท

Being Aussie I grew up with British humour and personally found it far funnier than American humour ( please my American brothers donโ€™t take offence its just me :) Hail and Pace , Young ones , Not the 9 Oโ€™clock news , Monty Python, Benny Hill , Dave Allen , Red Dwarf ad nauseam . I can love a few American comedians for sure , but it was always the brits who left me laughing my arse off . Billy Connolly live left me sore for a week after seeing him at the State Theatre years ago โ€ฆ..

ยท

I like him and for the reference I'm 42 (creeping up to 43) so the young tiktok generation is lost on me.

He does it a little different with a dash of humor, a sprinkle of information and with a flair of a showman. I love the bit what the wife said, and at the end click it, just find it fun and he makes me laugh. And sometimes that's all what I need after a day of hard work. ๐Ÿ˜„

When Russell is more serious and with less quick cuts, he's okay, but there are times when I find his content unbearably cringy (I think that's a word but my spell checker just highlighted it so it may not be). Thankfully, he's not as bad as TGV with that stupid dinosaur. I can't abide Britt or Jenni or any of the others who jumped on the bandwagon as novelties in the collecting world of middle-aged men to milk their simps. In fairness, none of them are ever as awful as The Time Teller.

My favourites are Ben, Max, the My Retro Watches guy, the Nekkid Watchmaker, Tim on Caseback Watches, Marshall who repairs watches, and occasionally Jody when he's not got a disclaimer.

Sadly, I'm aware of a great many others who tend to be dealers (i.e. scalpers), watchtuber critics, and lots who appeared during covid and don't know the difference between a single index and indices (you'll spot them too), and one guy where everything is "kind of" who drives me up the wall. For some reason, they keep on appearing as recommended videos no matter how many times I click "not interested".

So how does one be a female watch enthusiast YouTuber who hasn't "jumped on the bandwagon as novelties in the collecting world of middle-aged men to milk their simps." ?

ยท

By sticking to the watches aimed at them and be knowledgeable and passionate about them, and let's be honest, wrist watches were originally intended for women (see the history) plus women have far more jewellery options available to them in the first place, rather than reviewing watches marketed for men. That's about as much as I have to offer, but keep reading until the bottom because I sense that your question comes from an "intersectional politics" based viewpoint and you can't wait to label me as something I'm not.

The majority of female watch YouTubers (and there really aren't that many) know that certain men will watch their content just because they've bought the same watch which is too big for them anyway. They also know, because they are taking items to talk about from their husband's collections, that the watches they talk about appeal to men, and they are savvy enough to realise that most watch collectors are middle-aged men with various existential crises going on who (stereotype or not) like the idea of a younger woman who smiles a lot being interested in something they are. Even though the men who pander to these YouTubers and send them money in Patreons and Superchats have zero chance with a younger woman unless they are billionaires or celebrities like Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt (and that always turns out well), these often homely chicks still get a simp following because of their youth rather than knowledge or real interest in the subject matter. If anyone says they watch Britt or Jenni (and I can think of a few others but don't know their names) because of their insightful content, they are lying to us and themselves. Their videos have even less to say about watch collecting than Adrian Barker, who promises much yet never delivers.

Having said that, Sophie Shohet, a handbag reviewer/influencer, made a video about buying a Tag Heuer from Harrods which was far more insightful and not at all cringey or "stepping into a male dominated space" as a novelty because she's always had Tag Heuer watches, is tall enough to pull off the look of wearing a "man sized" watch, and is ultimately a far nicer person underneath with no real YouTube agenda. She also doesn't care about watches that much nor does her husband, since they are both car people, but that's another story.

There are females (or rather "women" not female since we aren't animals) who review watches very well indeed and don't try to milk the audience of the opposite sex. I've watched lots of influencers over the years, from Mar through to that "model" (really an actress) who always dresses in pink and beige and whose name I can never remember, and the ones who review watches do it perfectly for their target audience of women.

So if you need to know how to do it properly, ask the women who review watches (and other jewellery) who have much more successful multi-million subscriber counts and views not me, a man, who is not a YouTuber just a viewer and has other YouTubers who I find far more informative and entertaining.

Just a final edit: I'd rather watch Max or Ben rather than any other YouTuber because, and I can't believe I have to write this on this forum, I would much rather see a young, attractive, and well-groomed. eloquent man talking about the subject matter I like than a girl from a younger generation who I can't identify with and has no "X factor" (or anyone else since this is purely subjective). I'm a married man (for quarter of a decade) and a rampant heterosexual (and I don't care one way or another if you're not), but I like what I like, and at the tender age of 54 now, my tastes are not likely to change no matter if the world around me tries to force me to.

This is a good conversation to have, so please don't be worried about being labelled.

Do you understand how your comments have a "stick to your own lane" feel to them?

women have far more jewellery options available to them in the first place, rather than reviewing watches marketed for men.

The majority of female watch YouTubers (and there really aren't that many) know that certain men will watch their content just because they've bought the same watch which is too big for them anyway.

Is this a summation based on opinion or fact?

Even though the men who pander to these YouTubers and send them money in Patreons and Superchats have zero chance with a younger woman unless they are billionaires or celebrities like Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt (and that always turns out well)

There are watch channels with patreons and superchats??? Genuinely didn't know this and would be interested to know who and the kind of content they put on.

I think this isn't terribly fair to chaps who watch lady Youtubers.

Having said that, Sophie Shohet, a handbag reviewer/influencer, made a video about buying a Tag Heuer from Harrods which was far more insightful and not at all cringey or "stepping into a male dominated space" as a novelty

Do you see how this sounds a bit "gate keeper"?

. I've watched lots of influencers over the years, from Mar through to that "model" (really an actress) who always dresses in pink and beige and whose name I can never remember, and the ones who review watches do it perfectly for their target audience of women.

Again "as long as ladies review small watches or direct their towards other ladies, it's ok" vibes?

So if you need to know how to do it properly, ask the women who review watches

Sorry, the point of my question wasn't aimed at how to become a lady Youtuber, but rather to understand if you feel a woman could review large watches without being labelled as "milking simps"?

Is the answer that you don't think woman could be taken seriously in their watch reviews if you personally think the watch is too big them?

For example... I own plenty of 40mm + diameter watches, which are 100% my own. Let's face it, reviews are basically Specs +/- history +/- comparison +/- opinion. So what would make my review cringy/novelty compared to a chap doing the same review?

I am genuinely trying to grasp how women are being viewed so am interested in understanding your comments better.

Oh okay, at least the ice is broken, but given the current "political climate", I am aware that other agendas can come into play.

It's not gatekeepery at all. I watched a gay woman Youtuber who loves Panerai (which are too big for anyone except Arnold Schwartzenegger) and she was very interesting. But I do believe that certain sizes of watches are designed for certain sizes of wrists, and some look particularly stupid on those who can't pull them off.

I really don't have an a definitive answer to how to be a successful YouTuber since I'm not part of that game (or industry), I'm just a viewer and consumer. All I care about, at the end of the day (and I hate that expression), is the watch itself and all the details about it, and whether or not I think it will suit me or be something I want.

A woman with a woman-sized wrist is not likely to showcase the watch in a way that I relate to, no matter who she is or how attractive she may or may not be (whether objectively or subjectively), and if she comes across as someone with little knowledge who has seen a "niche" opportunity to get money out of YouTube then I am more likely to avoid her content. There are grifters all over YouTube in every interest, and there are genuine people too. Sometimes we can all be fooled, and some personalities attract more than others, but I'm of the opinion that content counts.

Tim Mosso, for example, would not be considered the best of all watch reviewers if his content wasn't spot-on for what people want. He's very quick over the ground, and I don't care what he looks like or his sexuality or nationality, as long as he tells me all the things I need to hear.

I honestly don't know what else to tell you. Some people are good at YouTube, some people aren't, and some start off well but outstay their welcome, while others improve and never get noticed at all.

I've never seen any of your videos (that I know of), and so I'm not in a position to critique what you are doing right or wrong.

I don't knowingly have any agenda and I'm not on YouTube (zero time for that!), so I'm not seeking advice, just insight.

I completely understand that if a YouTuber wasn't showing off a watch in a meaningful way to you (due to wrist size say) then you wouldn't find their videos helpful.

Do you think it would be fair to say that actually it doesn't matter to you if a YouTuber is male or female, you just don't watch YouTubers with small wrists and poor knowledge? (Which is fair comment).

I too am a Brit, but it's gin for me tonight!

I can definitely get the fact that you gravitate towards people who you 'resonate' with (let's play 'gen-z words' bingo ๐Ÿ˜†).

Since reviews are all massively massively subjective at the end of the day, we can either go to them for the pretty watch pictures and wrist shots, or try and find YouTubers who seem to have a similar taste in watches.

Nobody has my god-awful taste (the watch world should be thankful for this), but if I thought "Wow, this YTer doesn't seem to like any of the watches I do!"... well I guess that's a good reason to not watch them... and equally if I found one who I seemed to 'connect with' (bingo!) then that would be a like and subscribe job.

Re: The Time Teller, as I think someone else said... Many YouTubers have their little thing to help them stand out, be it a plastic dinosaur or the usual "Hellloooooooo" (if you know who I mean then you absolutely said it in his voice ๐Ÿ˜†). It seems the Time Teller has the slightly disgruntled persona.

Not going to lie, sometimes I want someone to collude in my miserable, depressed, black thoughts, and on those days I guess he would do the job... But there is so much negativity in the world anyway, I try not to actively seek it out if I can avoid it.

My condolences on your bereavement. Stuff like that puts all the other rubbish into perspective.
