Am I the only one to hate nato straps?

I see everyone loving nato straps (even on absurd watches i.e. on an iwc Portuguese...).

I almost feel bad. I don't like at all nato straps.

Am I the only one?

I don’t like them because they make watches thicker and I don’t like the metal piece that ends up on the side of the wrist that some people use to tuck in the tail. I do like two piece nylon straps though

·

Should I post a pic of my Hamilton Thinline Quartz Tuxedo on a rubber or Purple NATO...🫠😅🫣😉

Granted I cut all of them down to single pass if they aren't already.

Sometimes I'll even cut the tails down too.

·

The tail, extra thickness..... Just no....

·

My Orion Calamity was delivered on a great, high quality NATO. It was my first. I hated it.

I gave it to a young collector friend who put it on a giant Seiko diver. He loves it.

·

Not quite "hate", more like bemused indifference.

·

I find they have uses, particularly if you do a lot of "outdoorsy" stuff involving dirt, bug spray, etc..

I normally use them for camping because they are easy to clean, and comfortable.

·

NATO strap are great at insta-cheaping the look of any watch.

Aside from that they are pretty much useless.

·

I like them. But only on sub 40mm dive watches. Black or grey NATO only. 😜

I hate em, never fit right and always makes me feel like I am a college kid trying to match my strap to my short shorts, boat shoes, Polo button down, and bass pro shop hat.

i agree on the two pieces... especially if not plain, but wit embellishments like reinforcements on the holes, pieces of leather ecc ecc... i agree completely on the thickness.

THAT IS THE POINT! I can't stand to see (for instance) a modern speedy on a nato... it seems cheap! thank you for the understanding!

and that's the second reason!

Once you find the perfect combo it's 👌🏻

still not convinced, man. but i agree with you that the matching are right. plus if they are good for you: they are perfect!

·

Who cares about matching? I like me some fun color. I also wear some sort of uniform most days btws. (Granted some days Hawaiian shirts and Crye Combat pants is a stretch, but it's still a uniform lol.)

I like NATO on certain types of watches. I'm not shure I would put one on a Patek Philippe, but some other styles are more appropriate for a NATO. A field watch is probably the best candidate, but it can go pretty well with pilots and divers or any sport oriented style. Watches that are strap monsters are generally really cool looking with NATO straps. Also, I do find them more comfortable than leather or metal bracelets, and for watches with bigger crowns, the raised height helps you to flex your wrist a bit easier.

Image
·

Depends on the watch.

·

I dislike them as well for the following reasons:

Adds height to the watch.

I feel like they make my watch look cheap.

The left over tail bugs the F*CK out of me.

In 40 years of wearing a watch, I've never once needed the one benefit of a NATO: if one spring bar breaks, the watch is not potentially lost.

Rubber NATO? Never seen such a thing but I'm not the widest traveled fella.

Cut off the unnecessary second layer, trimmed the end with a knife.

Smells like heaven aka vanilla.

I dislike NATOs... The tail... The double thickness...

I prefer single pass nylon straps (for hot days anyway) I lean towards the Crown and Buckle Chevron. I did pick up a Crown and Buckle NATO with the "single layer option" and I don't mind it - would prefer a shorter "regular" length but I like the colors with this watch so I live with it.

It was a really nice strap as NATO goes but wasn’t right for me.

·

Dislike 90% of them , but love a proper NATO (sewn in buckle) for comfort and security.

·

OEM bracelet or The Watch Steward Marine Nationale straps with a VERY rare Brady sailcloth thrown into the mix. CANNOT STAND NATO STRAPS

·

I answered B but . . . although I do put nylon straps on dress watches, they're not technically Natos but single-pass straps, usually made by DeBeers. I have grey, brown and black. My strap of choice for a dress watch is leather, but hot summer months won't allow it. These straps look great, and the grey one even resembles a mesh bracelet at a distance. My dress watches are thin, so the strap underneath the watch head isn't an issue. They have lots of holes for a perfect fit, and then you can tuck the tail in the last keeper.

I don't like "real" Natos at all. Double thickness, the extra keeper on the other side of the strap and that horrible horrible bunched-up look that you're supposed to do with the extra tail.

I have pretty much the same opinion about Natos.

Hey, it's the Snoopy Surfboard Watch, isn't it? Those strap colors are a good fit.

Yeah... It's Snoopy. I liked the LOOK of the gray & white stripe NATO that comes on and this was the closest I could find from Crown and Buckle - as soon as I put the new strap on, I was very happy with the look.
