Hate on the Orient Logo

I’m quite new to the watch collection game. I started about a year ago researching watches and so far I have 2 watches, the Timex Weekender and the Orient Kamasu. I am planning to expand my collection with a dress watch. I was thinking of going with the Bambino or the cocktail time.

The more research the more I notice a common theme. Everyone dislikes the orient Logo. Im actually fond of the logo. It’s an old logo for sure but there is history and meaning behind it, one of the reasons I went with the kamasu instead of the seiko sport 5.

Even companies like seiko, timex, citizen just have their name on the logo. Im not saying its the best, but the amount of hate this logo gets is crazy.

So as a new comer to the watch community, what makes the Orient logo so bad in your opinion? What are some better logos? What can Orient do to fix it?

I’ve owned a bunch of Orients and I’ve always been fine with the logo. It’s not the reason I love the watch but absolutely don’t dislike it. I’m really not sure why the hate is there. Same thing for Christopher Ward. For some reason people HATE the logos. I just don’t see the same issues.

Love my Orient watches. I like their logo. It's recognizable.

Enjoy that Orient watch!

Cheers!

·

I’ve never even considered an Orient because of the logo. I’m a graphic designer and I can appreciate it for what it is but it is not for me. The Grand Seiko wordmark on the other hand….

·

I also have some professional design background but I actually like the Orient logo... yeah it's cheesy and maximalist, but cheesy maximalism is an endangered species nowadays. It shows confidence! Orient's cursive dial text is really pretty too!

One thing it definitely isn't: a proper coat of arms. But a proper coat of arms is not going to look good at 2mm tall anyway.

·

A lot of it may be that some people like a clean dial and the Orient logo has a fair amount to it. I personally like a busy dial so I like it.

·

I do design and had to return the Orient Type B Flieger Pilot because that applied splash of shiny logo was at war with the rest of the watch.

It’s kind of jarring on some very modern Bambinos, more OK on the divers I guess.

But on the Flieger it was a deal breaker.

This is the first time I’m hearing about people disliking the logo. If you like it, I’d not give a hoot what others think. There’s always someone that isn’t going to like something. The only thing that matters in a situation like this is how you feel.

·

I never hated it, but I wasn’t exactly crazy about the logo when I was looking at buying my first Orient.

I’m glad I got over that, because I think it looks great when you actually see the watch itself—as opposed to close-up photos online.

(For the record, I currently have a Mako II and a Bambino.)

·

That’s the one of the reasons I am disregarding Orient. Logo looks like it belongs to a tobacco brand. 🤷‍♂

Agreed - and a bad tobacco brand.

As I build my collection, including an Orient, I'm learning that watches look so much different in person than the macro photos online. The Orient logo is an example. Microscopic photos make it look busy and old fashioned (and it is), but on the wrist it's barely noticeable.

·

It doesn’t bother me because it doesn’t look like the myriad of cheap mall brand designs. It’s kind of classy.

·

I own an orient kamasu and bambino, im fan of fhe watch but not their logo. Its like they havent update it since 1950 😅. Its too complicated it

·

Ummmmm. I didn’t know people hate the orient logo. I just knew some snobs didn’t care for the brand as a whole… I’d say leave it alone…. You don’t see Rolex changing their logo cause it’s “old”…..

·

And the bambino was my first watch and even though I have some heavy hitters in my collection now the bambino and maestro both will remain in the collection and get worn on occasion.

·

@Uhrologe has an interesting post on this topic. The Orient logo indeed looks a lot like the Bavarian coat of arms

Orient logo is very unique and it's easily recognizable in my opinion.

I just wish they start making some smaller watches...

Because for the money they are very hard to beat.

·

I like Orient watches, but yeah, the logo screams “I paid $2.99” on fiverr to have them design it.” I know it is harsh, but I could throw a rock in any city and hit some store with a two lion crest like that. Google the two lion logo and you will get inundated with businesses. It is not aesthetically unpleasing, just generic. Kind of like this recent logo trend that tells me the designer put zero effort into the logo and I guarantee the product will be basic.

I prefer the Orient Star logo

Same can be said for Islander Watches. I don’t get it. I think it’s just a way for Seiko fanboys to criticize a watch brand that is doing things better than Seiko could do with their SKX and other models. I think it’s a form of gatekeeping, deriding an affordable brand without having to admit they don’t like it that the plebs can afford nice watches that outperform the more expensive Seiko divers.

Seiko own actually Orient since some time back...

·

An Orient logo on certain colors, especially a green dial looks so ornate and maximalist, some might even call the combo gaudy but damnit do I love it.

Doesn't change the point of my comment. I know they are a sort of subsidiary with Epson, SII, TMI, etc. It's the principle of it, though. Regardless of which corporation owns the brand, there are folks out there that are miffed about the fact less affluent watch enthusiasts can buy an Orient that rivals the specs and quality of a $500 Prospex. In the end, there is nothing exclusive about Seiko watches, except maybe the $1,000 and up price tier, that should illicit snobbery.

·

LOL, I don't own one, but I have no problem with the logo. That's just me, though. To each their own. If you like the Bambino, get one.

·

I like it. Certainly more aesthetically pleasing than "Christopher Ward" or the Islander logo or 75% of microbrands ....

·

I don’t dislike the logo totally, but I would leave the seal behind and take out the word “Orient” entirely.

·

It's the Grand Seiko lion, Tudor shield and Rolex crown rolled into one!

On a side note, I think the logo is charming in its own way. What I don't like is the "Water Resist" on the Bambino dial. It just... I dunno, it bothers me.

·

I quite like the logo, very reminiscent of some long-lost ancient regalia or crest.

·

I've got three Orient divers and I quite like the logo.

Infact when I'm scanning wrist shots I always pause when I see that distinctive logo to give a thumbs up to whoever is posting their Orient shot so in a subliminal way its etched into my vision in a positive way!

It's busy and a bit cheesy but once seen it's not forgotten which is kind of the point of a logo?

·

Hmmm. This is the first time I ever heard about people hating on the Orient logo. I mean, I'm also not a huge fan of it (I just think it looks more like a brewery emblem than a watch logo), but I like that it's mostly applied and not printed, even on their most basic entry-level watches.

·

Actually, I kinda like the Orient logo, very classic. To me, that's a highlight in fact, a bit old school but I don't mind it. As for those brands that used their wordings, I'd rather they use a logo instead. It'll take up less space n look more symmetrical, IMHO. 😁
