What’s your Legacy piece?

Patek has that eye rolling-ly accurate tag line “you don’t really own one, you just take care of it for the next generation.”

What‘s the one watch in your collection that you see as your legacy piece? The one you’re holding onto and hoping to meaningfully pass on.

Mine is my dad’s 1972 DateJust. Even as he passed it along to me, he referenced it as my son’s watch, and he’s 7.

What’s yours?

I have strict instructions in my will to immediately sell all my watches upon my death, so that my children can think of me fondly every time they look upon the giant pile of cash I’ve left behind for them.

I don't have kids but if I did they would probably trade all my watches for an Apple watch.

Doesn't have kids and not planning to have any. My nephews doesn't seem to be watch nerds yet but give it time.

Oh... you saying this reminded me of this post...To this day I don't know if it was a troll post... Most likely is.... but it greatly infuriated and fascinated me at the same time.

TLDR: wants to sell her recently passed away grandmother's Credor for a Daniel Wellington or MVMT.

currently my first Rolex will be left for my eldest Son.

if ever get one of my Grails they will also be handed down. I have two boys to cater for 😀

·

Currently my Speedmaster will go to my daughter.

i hope my father would give his rolex to me as his "legacy"😂

My kids have no interest in watches. Most of my watches are not that valuable, either. And let's be honest, few kids want to wear their father's old watch. I have my grandpa's old pocket watch. He was cheap, bought a cheap watch that he didn't care to fix while he was still alive, and neither do I.

See, I know you're lying because you said "my Casio" like you only have one.  Nobody only has one Casio.

That's a god tier watch, that is. Any children should be honoured to have that as their inheritance!

Here is the watch that I inherited from my father a few years ago.

Soon after I gave myself the first mechanical watch.

Here is this Vuillemin Régnier in 18k gold. It dates from the early 80s.

At the time it was a famous brand in France but the quartz crisis got the better of it.

I love this watch !!

I had to have it serviced because it remained in a safe for several decades.

·

Datejust 16013 from my father

gmt 1675 from my grandfather

hopefully another Rolex that I buy myself. Don't really care about the brand. But the continuing tradition is really cool.

I don’t think a legacy watch exists anymore than a Grail does frankly

·

Oh wow it’s bedazzled!!

Yeah, I got nothing.  My only response is that it was the 80s and I imagine Gordon Gekko would have enjoyed one of these,.

·

Worked hard to get her…. Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15500ST with white face. My son will get this and I pray it stays in our family for generation!

Great watch. Is that a linen dial (did they have those then) or is it just patina?

I have the same style two toned DJ from the late 80s and hope this would be my legacy watch but like many others, my kids have no interest.

Of course, I had no interest in my Dad's watch when I was their age (mid 20s and had other things on my mind) but now would almost do anything if I could inherit it because I remember my Dad wearing it every day: a silver dialed horseshoe emblemed steel tool watch (that I assume was an Omega Seamaster or Constellation/ I had no interest as a child and only remember the "horseshoe"). I even remember going with him when I was in 6th grade to replace the horseshoe watch with a Seiko two toned quartz DJ homage (quartz crisis indeed).

Maybe our kids will (like me at least) grow to appreciate watches or at least want a tangible memory of their Dad. Of course, the watch will have less meaning to our kids if it's part of an ever changing collection rotation that they won't remember so maybe the whole legacy thing is not for collectors like us.

·

No kids and I plan to have all but one of my watches buried with me. The one remaining watch going to the executor of my will as a contingency good faith “payment“ to ensure my wishes are honored at the time of my demise.

That's fair, but even for the fun of the exercise it's interesting to think "if I had to pick one watch that I would hope I someone would want to inherit..."   Just another prism through which to view one's collection.

Yep, it's a linen dial.  I also remember this being the watch my dad wore everyday and I totally think about your point re collectors rotating through enough of a collection that there's no one definitive watch our kids might remember us by.  At the very least, my kids know that I have a love of watches and ask me about them sometimes or comment on them.  I wonder which ones have left an impact on them and which ones they'll remember or even want to keep for themselves one day.

·

Neither of my (adult) children get dewy eyed about my watches. My son wears a Smartwatch and my daughter uses her phone.

I think, sometimes, that we have to look at our motives for thinking about a legacy item. Are we doing it for our kids or are we doing it for ourselves? My guess is the latter. Watches just don't have the clout for the present generation.

·

My dad left his Seiko to me that’s older than me. My kids love it and I’ll pass it down to one of them.

Also have a birthday yeah watch for each of them. BB58 blue for one and a Speedy for the other.

·

My Dad is already trying to figure out how to split up his watch collection between my brothers and I.  He already knows that there’s going to be arguments over some of them.  Anything I get will be left to my daughter, so….

This reddit thread made me laugh so hard. I was so taken aback by the premise that I even bought into the troll for a moment 🤣

·

My legacy watch is my dad’s Rolex Datejust reference 1603.  My dad inherited the watch from my grandfather who received the watch as a gift for helping out his brother-in-law in a time of need.  I’m now the 3rd generation to own the watch and I hope to pass it down to a 4th generation if I’m lucky enough to have kids.

·

I would leave all my watches to my son in the future. But one watch which holds sentimental values is my wedding watch. I will give this watch on his wedding day for him to wear. I believe and hope this watch will be in the family for generations.
