Stepped Cartier Tank Jumbo as my first post, sup everyone!

Recently discovered this wonderful forum and am excited to be here!

Got this 1975 New York edition Stepped Tank Jumbo ref. 15716 this week. Originally sought to get a Cristallor Jumbo but those are 50% more expensive and quite rare to come by these days.

This particular design was sold by Cartier boutiques in New York, Paris & London between 1974-1976. Only ~2500 of the New York edition were produced, while London & Paris boutiques each made around 5,000 of these watches.

Would love to see your vintage Cartiers as well!

Welcome to WC, that’s a hell of an opening shot. I wish I had a vintage Cartier to show you. I’m stuck with a new tank must, and really happy to have it. I’d love to find some money under the sofa cushions to buy a vintage tank Louis.

·

Congratulations on a special piece and welcome to the forum from another vintage tank fan!

I was actually going to get the new Tank Must as well! They're amazing value honestly and super sexy watches.

Cool watch.

I love it! Sadly I don't have any vintage Cartier to contribute but welcome to WC!

·

Oh my. I love Cartier and the Tank is pure elegance. I drool over the thought of a Santos on my wrist, but the Tank is a close second. Good for you. Most excellent taste.

·

Gor-jus! And, reminiscent of the VC Toledo!

·

Love the tank!

·

Beautiful Tank! The stepped case looks cool.

Thank you! Yeah the art deco style really caught my eye. Gave it into service, sweating bullets Cartier doesn't replace or anything (despite my countless requests)

Hi Kostyantyn, I just inherited the 1976 NYC Stepped Tank Cartier (as new) with original strap and was enquiring with Cartier in Sydney for a service but they are uncertain as to the likely cost. The watch runs about 1-2 minutes fast over 24 hours. Can you give me any feedback you received and cost on your service if possible? I'm thinking to leave it until I feel it really needs it. Awesome watch love the design, quite unique!

Heya! So my service from Cartier ended up being $545, it includes pretty much full movement service excluding replacement of external parts. I did my service in the Cartier NYC flagship, took them about 2.5 weeks to get the service done.

From my experience though, I would not really recommend Cartier's official service if you're looking at it purely value wise. I thought getting the watch serviced at the watchmaker would be the best way to do it, but their communication was terrible (I had no idea what parts were being replaced and received no report at the end of the service), and they are known for frequently replacing original parts without letting you know. I had to ask them multiple times to not replace any of the original parts (outside of the movement) and had massive anxiety throughout the process because nobody could give me a proper confirmation.

If you're able to find a good watchmaker familiar with vintage Cartier, I'd recommend to go that route. You'l pay at least 2x less (if not more) and will know exactly what needs to be done.

Apologies for not replying sooner. Thanks Kostyantyn for your advices, I weighed up all the pro's and con's and in the end decided to take it into Cartier (Sydney flagship) a few days ago. Ultimately this was based on the fact that I am the original purchaser of the watch from 1980 and should I decide to sell it later on I can attribute the ownership and the maintenance by Cartier. I took into account everything you said and I am monitoring the Cartier procedure - service was good so far but I am awaiting a report as to what might need to be done and how much. Will keep you posted.

HI Kostyantyn,

Its now 5 months later and my watch is in Switzerland with Cartier (they dont have the expertise in Australia to service it!) but more than that they insist on replacing the face and hands which I couldn't detect there was a problem with it but apparently its flaking and will get worse, they also require that they keep the replaced parts. All at a total cost of aprox $1800 AUD. Like you the communication has been very slow and disappointing. I am trying to make the decision to repair and service or request that they return the watch. They wont do just a service, it has to be all or nothing. My concern is that they will devalue the watch by replacing the face and hands but I am really left with no choice if I want to use and wear it. Any thoughts? Regards.
