What doesn’t bother you, but seems to bother others?

We recently discussed things we can't stand on a watch, but there were many things listed that I like, or don't mind.

What doesn’t bother you about a watch, but seems to bother others?

For me…

Unsigned crown

Ghost date

Asymmetry in dial design

Odd lug width

Cyclops

I'm sure there are others.

Mineral crystal

  1. Homages
  2. Roman numerals
  3. Certain brands (Movado, Tag, etc)
·

I'm with you on the ghost date. The big one for me is lume. Good lume is a nice bonus, but poor/short lasting lume really isn't a deal breaker for me at all.

I now fully expect to be kicked off this site by a pitchfork wielding mob (with fully lumed pitchforks of course)!

·

roman numerals

Quartz

Seiko‘s 😛

·

A power reserve that seems to last an eternity. If I’m wearing an automatic and plan to wear it the next day, as long as it gets me through the night who cares whether it’s got 60 hours worth?!

If I don’t wear it the following day, it’s likely to be days before I wear it again and it’ll need winding by then, irrespective of the reserve 🙄

·

Tag Heuer, vintage, and the prices of Rolex

·

I agree with most of your list. I don't care much about an unsigned crown, a day or date complication, asymmetry, or odd sized lug width (under 20mm). I wear too much vintage to be a crystal snob. Lume is a bonus, not a requirement. Homages are fine. I also don't fetishize accuracy.  Get me to within a minute a day if it is an old watch.

I think for me, it's the fundamental idea that all human beings are selfish and self-serving, and that unbeknownst to our own sentiences, we are constantly lying, prevaricating, and rationalizing solely in order to better replicate the genes inside of us, as programmed into us by those very same genes.  I mean, if we could all just recognize and accept that every single one of us is evil deep down inside, and face that reality pragmatically, we could come up with all sorts of systems and processes that address that fundamental trait in all of us, that could make the world a thousand times better than what we have today...

...

Oh!  You mean with regard to watches???

Well, then it's gotta be the power meter on GS spring drive.  I love 'em!  I don't know why people feel so much animosity towards 'em!

Sizes under 35mm.

·

Have a bit of OCD. I don't think I have ever owned a single watch that I didn't find something wrong with.

Sizes under 35mm.

I wear vintage regularly at 29 or 30mm, but then again, not everyone has a perfectly sized wrist (TM).

Wrist bros 👌

·

unsigned crown, roman numeral, why is that bother many people from previous thread. lol

·

"Fake-Vintage" (fauxtina, "Fake" vintage looking dials etc). If it looks great it looks great, and I think there is even a benefit in beeing able to enjoy vintage and the benefits of a modern watch at the same time.

I agree that the power reserve indicator doesn’t bother me as much as it does other people but then I saw this preview today and I’d rather have the watch on the right

I had no idea! I saw power reserve indicator as a feature in the 9RA2 movement but didn‘t see it on the dial so thought they chose to obscure it. That is really cool

Yeah, in the past, the only spring drive watches they had with the power meter on the backs were watches that cost like $50k.  Too funny.  They know that there are people out there who want the spring drive but hate the power meter on the dial so much that they're willing to shell out a $45k premium to get it.

It's funny, but EVERY time I see a comment like, "I don't understand why Company A doesn't just do B.  We've all been asking for it!" I want to say, "Well, it's because they make more money by NOT doing B."  But, nobody wants to hear that.  It just makes people angry.

  • I used to be on this BMW forum, and people would endlessly spew invective, "I can't understand why BMW doesn't include wireless Apple CarPlay for free with the M2.  I mean, it comes free on a Hyundai!"  The answer:  "Well, because they know you'll pay $300 for it, so why the f*ck would they give it to you for free?  Do you go around handing out $300 randomly to people on the street?  If the answer is no, then why would BMW randomly hand you something they know you'll pay $300 for, for free?"

With that said, watch enthusiasts have been asking GS to make spring drive watches without the power meter on the dial for ages.  Yeah, they've made those for a very long time now.  Here they are:

  • SBGZ003 - $57k
SBGZ003
  • SBGZ005 - $103k
SBGZ005
  • SBGZ007 - $79k
SBGZ007

Why doesn't GS offer stuff like the Cherry Blossom or the Snowflake or the Skyflake or whatever without the power meter on the dial?  Here's the real reason:

Haha well said, that’s why I drive a Genesis, where there’s only three different packages and they don’t have a million add-ons. Great value too, just like a Grand Seiko

·

The five stars on a Longines Spirit Dial. I personally really don't mind those, but some people really seem to hate them.

That’s exactly why the SBGA407 was my first “adult” purchase. It is such a gorgeous dial. Wearing it right now as a matter of fact 🙂

Waiting lists.

Sometimes in life you have to wait for the shit you really really want.  Especially if lots of other people really really want it too. It just be like that Sometimes. Why get all pissed off about it.

Maybe, just maybe, having to wait will help you determine if you actually want said item.

·

I realize they are super unpopular, but I am 100% fine with butterfly clasps. They really help center the clasp on the underside of the wrist, they lie flat and don't catch on anything, and they integrate much better than a fold-over clasp. They look and feel good, in other words. The Aqua Terra and Railmaster are both fantastic examples (but usually cited as a negative for these watches).

The one downside seems to be that they lack micro-adjustment, which is fair enough... Except my wrists seem not to change size. I do not find myself using the micro-adjustment on my watches that have them, once I get the initial fit right.

·

What anyone else thinks

·

Case and lug to lug dimensions that overwhelm the wrist. Poor accuracy. AR coating on the outside of the crystal.

·

The helium escape valve on the Seamaster Diver 300. People hate it, but I like it. Without it, the Seamaster wouldn't be the Seamaster.

·

Helium escape valve doesn't bother me

·

I would add Miyota 8215 in an inexpensive watch to your list.

·

I'm annoyed when a brand brings back something from its historic catalog and either ignores easy details or adds unnecessary embellishment that distracts from the purity of the original design. I can understand case sizing differences due to movement changes/availability, but other than that, I say "meh!".
