What to wear to AD

Chance to go to Mappin and Webb tomorrow to collect my wife's Longines watch after a battery service. There is one staff member who was so kind to me during a lockdown purchase last year, but another staff member who did not terat me well wouldn't register interest for an OP36 (I am registered with M&W at another store). I want to have a serious conversation about coming off the M&W Rolex waitlist and asking them to get a Breitling Superocean 57 Outerknown in for me to see before possibly buying. Which one would work best? I always do a wrist check with the staff member to strike up a conversation...

I totally understand the question - I am asking myself the same everytime I go to the AD 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

I would go with the Seamaster. Pure classic, great conditions and it shows you are a Watch enthusiast and not just a media driven Rolex fan 😉

If you're going to be asking the AD for a favor, it never hurts to remind them that you've bought expensive items from them in the past -- it indicates that you're likely to do so again in the future.

Be a true badass and wear a watch of youth... plus it shows you are looking to get a more formal watch... your current fancy watch collection just says you already have one...

Wear what you bought there. I cannot emphasize this enough. It shows loyalty and you can speak to it in conversation. If you can, talk to the person who you connected with the first time And ask about the OP. Short of one of the hot colors, you should not be waiting long for an OP in this market.

When I visit my AD I try to wear a watch from a brand that they don't represent, specifically to remind them that there are options.

LOL.  I have this internal debate every time I visit my AD.  Sometimes I want to wear something from another source to remind them that they aren’t the only game in town.  Other times, I want to wear something I bought there to remind them I’ve been a long time customer.

Today, I wore my Cartier to buy a Hamilton, Tudor or Longines but bought another Cartier instead.

If it’s not an allocation model, where what you want. How we for an in demand item, loyalty (usually) pays off.

Hard to tell. Normally I would say wear a Casio. If the AD doesn't treat you well and thinks "he only wears a 20 $ Casio, how could he afford a Rolex/Breitling/whatsoever" It's the right time to choose a new AD.

On the other hand the Seamaster shows that your into watches, a watch enthusiast. The Speedmaster might not tick that box as good as the Seamaster. On the other hand it also depends on the AD. If the AD is cheking your wrist and he knows that you bought the Speedmaster there it could be some sign of loyalty that he wants to reward. So I voted for the Speedy.

But I wouldn't be surprised if the AD isn't looking at your wrist at all and doesn't care about what you're wearing. At the end of the day it's just usual business for the AD. I don't think you'll get a watch or don't get it because you wear a certain watch if the AD already knows you. I think being friendly an showing general interest is way more important.

As stated above wear the watch you bought from them ,it shows brand loyalty remind them you are a loyal customer,if you don't get a good vibe from the sales person time to move on

I say speedy sapphire.  I think that mo money is generally mo love.  They have no interest or notice of watches that aren't pricey.  That's been my experience at ADs.

·

Honestly visit your AD on weekday morning not during the holidays.  Do it several times a year, make a friend.  Friendship can go a long way.  It matters who you are, not the wrist fashion or dollars.

·

I say wear the Speedy since you bought it there for all the reasons stated by others. When I go to my AD, my salesperson and the manager (when he's there) will politely say hello and ask me how I'm enjoying my watch and I'll lift my wrist and say I love it.

Take this with a grain of salt because I have bought 2 watches at this AD and have been on the list for a Pepsi for 3 years so maybe this isn't the best course of action (of course this could be the fact that it's a Pepsi or that it's in a high end mall in SoCal by the beach so my chances of spending enough to matter are pretty low).

The Seamaster is the obvious choice to watch nerds, but I doubt most salespeople are watch nerds. I’d wear the Seamaster anyway, as others have said, if they don’t respect you, don’t pander to them. It costs them nothing to be nice, so if they can’t do that, dont give them your money.

BINGO!

·

Don't wear a watch, keep them guessing.

I noticed you forgot to include the correct answer in your poll, which is of course the Invicta Bolt Zeus Magnum, they will cower in fear at your presence

The Speedy, most definitely.

My wife is so pleased to have her Longines watch back. Had to insert a link for her as she hasn't worn it in 3 years.

Folks behind me were registering for a Rolex for their son, to have as a 21st Birthday gift in April 2024 - lovely thing to see! The staff member's tone changed completely when her father asked if he could register with his own ID rather than that of his son - I guess she worried he was a flipper trying to tell her a tale. As soon as the son registered with his own driving license, she was sweetness and light again.

The AD would not give me any indication of lead time on my Champagne dial OP36, nor any indication of the rate at which Rolex orders were being fulfilled - I suspect Watches of Switzerland Group stores have all been told to say this. They had only three Rolex exhibition watches in the store, when they would normaly have about 6 mens and 4 women's watches.

I talked to them about the waitlist frustration and my interest in a Breitling Chronomat GMT 40 or a Superocean Heritage 57 Outerknown. They didn't have these but they did let me try on a larger Chronomat 44. This was nice as I got to see the blue watch dial colour, feel the new design of the rider tabs on the bezel, and feel that amazing rouleaux bracelet. They said they would get either watch in for me within about a week or two if I wanted.

It's interesting to think that Breitling make 150,000 COSC certified watches in a year, and Rolex make 1,000,000 COSC certified watches. The dealer can get me one of two Breitlings including a new release in about a week, but I will probably be dead before they get me a Rolex. What this shows me is that amongst the pool of watch collectors who buy on balance of brand identity, design and function, there is supply to fulfill demand. Then there is a huge pool of people who just want to put money into a Rolex rather than into Gold or Crypto, who would not know what a rehaut engraving was if it came at bit them on the bottom.

I'm going to think about options for a few weeks. I have to say since I got the champagne dial Spirit 37 it kind of fills the hole for a small dressy champagne dial GADA that was part of the original appeal of the OP36, and I need on whether I have a genuine existential need to have that Rolex.
