Post W&W BB54 vs P39 - your next Tudor?

Okay folks. Lets address the elephant in the living room post Watches and Wonders here. Excluding cost and availability issues, would you pick they gorgeous and gamine Black Bay 54 or the diminutive ragazzo that is the Pelagos 39?

I’ve been wrestling with this exact hypothetical question. I’m more drawn to the look of the 39 - but wonder if the 37 would be a better fit. I think the only way to find out is to try them both.

Voted p-39 but it’s marginal!

I personally think they got the bezel all wrong on the 54. Hence why I’d have P39 out of the two. Except I turned down a P39 cos it just felt lacking something.. I couldn’t put my finger on then and still can’t.

I have to say that I instantly loved the look of the BB54. And will be getting it. Never liked the BB58. If the second hand bb58 prices drop I might get one as a beater. Sorry tangent going on there. With 54 I really wish they had put it on the new 5 link bracelet. That solder blob on the 3 link is just a fcuking no no. IF? I get it, it will have to be on Rubber or Bond NATO 👌

Overall, the BB58 over both of these. But a close second is the P39 and then I’m not 100% sold on the BB54. The proportions look weird to me, the bezel with no color makes it look boring and I never found myself needing the 58 to be smaller.

My next tudor will be the Pelagos fxd BUT my next one after that will be the new BB54. Its stunning! But on rubber though I can't be doing with those bloody faux rivets!

Yeah I noticed a number of BB58 suddenly on sale on chrono. I think a lot of people are thinking along the same lines.

·

The 54 instantly topped my list. The 37mm is my ideal size. So I'll have to take a look. But I would have thought Tudor learned their lesson with the faux rivets. Bummer.

·

I do think the BB54 is a noticeable upgrade from a BB58, but I don't know that I'll trade it in anytime soon. I do wish the 5 link bracelet were an option, but it's not a deal breaker. I honestly have never understood anyone who is vehemently against the faux rivets. I mean, I know we're all about the tiny details, but it's an issue I guess I've always been on the unpopular side of the issue. Tudor bracelets are nice and I couldn't care less about the inclusion of faux rivets. However, the rubber strap looks nice, so in the end I might end up going that route!

·

Hypothetically speaking because I'm not really a potential customer for Tudor's current portfolio and because I don't find any appeal in their square hands. My choice would be the BB54 because despite the specs and bezels, they are both more intended to be fancy wrist accessories rather than dive watches and the BB54 is a bit more elegant and colorful in comparison with the mostly monochromatic and squarish look of the Pelagos 39.

·

Taking cost out of the equation the Pelagos is an easy favorite.

·

Neither. I tried on the 39 yesterday and still like the regular original Pelagos better. Since I have big (fatter) wrists, I can't imagine the BB54 will be better. The original Pelegos feels more like the tool watch it is supposed to be for my pretend dives and adventures though I still haven't seen the FXD yet.

At 3 years young, I suspect there's a lot of mileage in the BB58 yet...

Indeed - 37mm could be the new 39mm. The Spirit 37 on a 16.5cm/6.5in wrist is awesome, and my eye has been drawn to smaller casesets since I got a vintage Omega 36mm. I want to see the rubber bracelet with t-fit combo vs the faux rivets.

·

I think this question is a hard one to answer too quickly. Both these models are killer and well respected in their own regard, but, at least in my opinion, they serve two different purposes/audiences. Are you wanting more of a rugged/current day tool watch, or something with a little more historical charm to it? Can’t go wrong either way, but for me and my wallet, I’d be going Pelly all day!

Yup, the spirit is on my list for most buy. I'm thinking the champagne dial. But I'm needing to replenish my watch budget first tho 😅😅😅.

on my tiny wrist, bb54 wins

Yesterday I went to the AD to try the BB54. I took some other watches along to compare it to as I wanted to be sure I wasn't doubling up too much with any of these (BB36, BB 'smiley' 79220N, and Sinn U50). I should have rung ahead as not one of the three ADs nearby had one in stock. However, while I was there, I thought I'd try the Pelagos 39. Now, when this came out, I dismissed it pretty quickly (without trying it) because I'm not keen on sunray dials, but when I tried that Pelagos on... I was blown away! It is amazing! Admittedly, I've never worn a titanium watch, so some of the love was the lightness, but I just loved everything else too. I really like the way the square indices complement the snowflake, the sunray dial is understated, and the bezel pops in a really good way. I'm actually seriously considering getting rid of my smiley and my Sinn U50. If you've read all this, I think you know which one I voted for.

Thanks - I have a trip to London next week - hoping to head to the new Tudor/Bucherer stores in Convent Garden to see P39 +/-BB54 in the flesh.

Beauty of a watch. I love how they gave the indicies and hands the design from the BB pro GMT. Chunks of lume are beautiful.

Have you experienced the issue many of mentioned online about weak lume on the hands?

I haven’t really noticed as much, I think the lume is just right, no complaints from me regarding this watch. It’s. Great tool watch!
