Something I've never seen

I have been scrolling on line in typical fashion when I came across this. I have been wanting something with a green dial, kind of an everyday piece.

At first, I didn't understand what it did. After spending some time on YouTube, I found out what it was.

It a frickin mechanical thermometer. How awesome is that. Finally besides a Chronograph, a useful complication. From what I found out, it uses a temperature sensitive spring mechanism to show the temp. Its scale is from -40 to 50c.

Now it's is in C, not F but who cares. I'm blown away. Also nice to learn it's made from 904L stainless, has a ridiculous Shock rating, and is gorgeous.

I'm not familiar with Ball watches so anyone with experience or opinion would be appreciated.

I have no experience but I can’t recall ever hearing anything negative about Ball. That’s a really interesting example you found. Even the 2 o’clock date is unusual but really looks good.

·

Im interested in Ball too. I kind of want to buy a new one at some point just to vote with my money but the second hand market has insane value imo on some of their watches

Oh good, you already know not to pay full retail. Significant markdowns require little asking. Other than that, their US distribution is poor and one of the online dealers had a guy that was unimpressed with them.

·

They have a pretty cool history. Originally an American company with a rich history tied to the railroads. They are perhaps most noted nowadays, for being one of a handful of companies that uses tiny glass ampules filled with tritium gas for the lume. It’s actually pretty freaking cool. Marathon and Luminox also do that and I totally want a watch that uses tritium gas. Anyway—reputable company. If you like it and have the dough, do it!😉

·

That does look very interesting. If you want it in Fahrenheit they do have that as an option (NT2222C-S3C-GRF)

·

My favorite brand! They don’t get much love on here but a lot of great watchmakers don’t get much love on here LOL

A mechanical thermometer, what could be cooler?

Depends on the temperature 🤪

·

The thermometer can also be ordered in Fahrenheit scale. As for Ball watches I love mine and would recommend them.

really? That's great to know.

·

Love my Ball watches. The none COSC options run at or better than COSC standards. They fit on the wrist great! They are thin, well finished watches. I will always have 1 or two in my collection. Highly recommend

·

Haha. Welcome to the metric side :)

I don't have any Ball timepieces personally, however, I've heard great things about them. They certainly have some rather interesting pieces...

·

Very cool

·

That really is cool. Leave it to Ball to do something so nerdy. Does it use tritium tubes as well? Seems like a cool piece...

something like 30 of them

You should get two. No collection is complete without a pair of BALLs

I have nothing but great things to say about Ball. I want to invest more into the brand in the near future. Waiting for some of their engineers to do something that screams at me.

For the time being... Just the one.

When „Dropping the Ball“ has a completely different meaning…

That aside, I’ve never seen a date on 2, let alone a thermometer on a mechanical watch.

·
Subshark

I love that but... the date window. Why? Just leave it off. You've got an unusual complication, why add the date window at all? And if you have to, why put it there?

I think it does look good. At least it's straight.

·

That date window placement is genius. It shows the company name to a higher power! 2nd of a month: Ball Squared. 3rd of a month: Ball Cubed!

·

Wow 🤩 that green dial looks superb. Never knew watches could measure temp.

Mine just tells the time 😂

I had this watch 40mm in blue bought directly from Ball when the watch was offered at a good price on pre-order. I thought that I would like the temperature sub dial, kind if did but when I bought it I didn’t realise it was inaccurate when on wrist. I suppose it’s obvious really as it’s bound to be affected by body temperature consequently it always read at least about +5 degrees C when on the wrist, pretty accurate when taken off though. This did not occur to me before a got it. Also wasn’t a fan of the butterfly clasp as I struggled to get a decent fit so I sold it. I could have done without the date window at 1 as well.

Fantastically built watch though with a spectacular dial and supremely accurate well within COSC, in fact one of only two watches I have owned that a stranger has commented on.

As long as you are aware of the inaccuracy of the temperature reading it’s a watch I have no hesitation to recommend.

·

I have a Ball Moonphase, it’s a lovely watch and the lume could keep you awake at night 😉. Recommended for me, that green one looks fab!

·

Ball make excellent watches

·

Trainmaster with temperature, not made anymore by Ball.

Ball is a good company. I have three and all still solid. I do like the company.

The only "problem" with Ball are the tritium tubes. They dim to the point of irrelevance over the course of ten years or so and then they need to be replaced. Luminox suffers the same fate. All of mine fit this description, I just haven't gotten around to sending them to Ball for servicing yet.

The problem with a thermostat on a watch is that it’s only accurate when it’s not on your wrist. Also, the greater difference between your body temp and external temperature, the greater the inaccuracy.

It seems like a great idea but in reality the thermostat seems to be about as accurate as just estimating by feeling. At least that’s what I’ve read from people who have actually owned one.

Ball makes amazing watches, as already mentioned, just don’t pay retail. Even the limited editions can be found for a discount on the secondary market.
