Just wondering

This might be a dumb question but how old does a watch have to be to be considered “vintage?”

I believe over 20 years is considered vintage.

·

Well I just turned 50 last year so I must be antique 😂

·

I prefer "of a certain age"

Much like me! 😂

·

25 years to qualify in r/vintagewatches.

·

I consider all of my 80s a older watches vintage now. I think it’s pretty cool my Helbros turns 64 this year and it runs like a champ

What movement is in your Helbros?

If you care to know my personal/uneducated opinion:

I don't care what the "official" definition is within the community; something made in the 90's is not vintage to me.

80's is sort of there. I'm thinking at least 70's and beyond.

But "vintage" is a two-part thing for me. It has to be at least from the 70's AND it has to be of high quality (whatever that means to me).

Between 20 and 30 years is considered neo-vintage.

Over 30 years is vintage.

Over 100 years is antique.

·

There's no hard and fast number. Some people make up any old bollocks, to be frank, and pass it off as a rule. I'd say, with watches, 25 years old is a pretty solid place to sit.

·

20 Neo vintage.

40 vintage.

20 & over years iirc.

Some people who are getting older and are stubborn call things from the 1990s “neo vintage”, but it doesn’t really make any sense and is pretty weak in the long term. “Neo-vintage” to me is like watches that are homages (not copies) to vintage designs, such as Lorier’s watches, Baltic’s MR01, Vario’s stuff, etc.

Neo-Vintage??

Can we just stop with "neo vintage"? That is sad. "New vintage" Just stop.

In 1971 Led Zeppelin released Led Zeppelin IV. 25 years earlier the best selling song was "Prisoner of Love" by Perry Como. 25 years ago the best selling song was "Candle in the Wind". Ask your children if that is vintage.

I know that it is hard for some of you to age, but early 1990's watches are as vintage as anything else. The nostalgia wave for 1990's Tags has already started. Crank up the Cowboy Junkies and just let it happen.

·

For me, when an era of style has changed in general, could be considered a vintage as well. Like art nouveau to deco to modern.

·

It's one of those terms that has passed into "whatever one wants it to mean" territory; especially with the increase in interest in vintage watches in the last 5 years.

Vintage cars are 25 years old or more to get a vintage plate in Utah.

But... for me, when I think of vintage, I think about items older than I am. So this makes it a very personal definition and a bit of a dilemma as someone 20 years my junior using the same definition would consider watches from the 90's as vintage.

But for the overall community, I think a minimum of 25 years if the model is still in production & 20 if not.

·

As you have seen, this is a very personal question! And each person here will have their own view. And considering it is your collection, who get to say what is and isn't to you! Just be aware that there are others here who will have very different views, and enjoy the difference! For me personally it refers to things before I remember watches.. so anything pre 80's!

·

Little bit old and not a modern trendy design

·

I never thought that this would be such a nuanced question. I appreciate each and every take. That’s why I love it here.

·

Generally, it's 20 years but the 2000s seem a bit recent tome to be called vintage.

My own categorization is anything from the early 1990s back is vintage with the heart of vintage being mid-1970s and prior.

Then again, I'm an old dude and someone who is 25 probably thinks something from 2000 is vintage.

·

Vintage is everything that you have to touch with a glove or else it falls to pieces. The bracelet needs to be hollow and must rattle so loud that you need to talk over it. And don't forget that it needs to run well out of specs by a double or triple margin. The "patina" should be at a level where you can hardly distinguish the hands from the dial.

Other than that it's basically like every other watch out there. 😌

·

Pre 2000 is considered vintage

·

Someone brought up the idea if the line is still in production. Like a five digit sub has heritage today. A memovox from the same time period has very different design languages

·

Depends on how old you are.

·

15+ Years

·

In my mind 1995 is 10 years ago, so vintage to me is over 40 years!

·

When we talk about vintage models, I think we can also consider the style of craftsmanship. Personally, I would say it goes back further than the models of the 1990s.

·

I would say older than 1990 can be considered vintage

·

20-30 years old is neovintage. 30+ years old is vintage. Seems to be what’s agreed upon the most although there’s no rule.

·

In my head anything pre quartz is vintage anything after is not. The thought of a vintage quartz is hard for me to understand as quartz is a new fangled idea.
