Introduction Post

Hello Watch Crunchers!

My name is Brian and like everyone else, I'm heavily into watches!:D

It all started because of my dad. He was into watches and would occasionally get me a digital watch here and there from Casio or Timex. What really captured my attention were the Timex digital watches where the display would shine green against the sun. Idk what kind of screen it was nor the model. All I know is that it was pretty and it held onto my short attention span

Fast forward some time, and I had a couple of pieces that were low-cost. Fossil this and Swiss Wegner there. At this time too, I was still under the impression that Casio was of better quality than Seiko (don't ask me where I got that idea). Anywho, I don't remember how it all started but on Instagram, I started to see the SKX007a lot. Like a lot a lot. Finally, I picked up my own piece for $230 (which is absolutely unheard of now).

Four years later, I've owned a lot of watches, sold several, and still own a respectable amount. I've learned a lot in these past few years and this journey has been stellar. Really excited to meet a lot of you and exchange our stories and opinions 🥰

Tell me a cool story about a watch you own/owned or a watch that you're absolutely yearning for! Or tell me a brand you can't stand! For me, it's Citizen...ish.

Hey, Brian! Welcome to WC! Nice collection.

Bought my first mechanical watch, Swatch Sistem51, with a visa gift card rebate I got from buying a phone, cause I needed an “adult” watch and hated changing batteries. No crazy story, just how I roll.

Of course not. There’s always more. 😆

Thank you. You got a pretty sweet collection going. We overlap on a few pieces here and there. One of these days I might grow up and move upmarket. Until then, I love Seikos and Casios.

·

Welcome, great post! My interesting watch story is that I use to own just one.

·

Welcome Brian :)

·

Love reading other people stories on watches. I wanted to buy a seiko 5 as my first mechanical watch (of course) but I came across this little store and the owner take out an Orient Mako 2 from his store front and he said I can have it for 125 USD because it was an ex display piece.

I recommend Brian's photo montage as the new standard way to show off your collection!

Hi Brian! So, regarding my watch story, I just bought this Casio A168 because I had a sudden nostalgia. My family and I went for an Umrah trip (it's basically mini Hajj pilgrimage) in Ramadan 2011. And I asked my dad to buy me a bracelet-ed Casio while we were in Mecca. I didn't even know what the model was, but it was similar to this one, I believe. But it was now gone, unfortunately 😥. Fast forward to this day, after some research, I bought that Casio A168 this Eid al-fitr and I couldn't be happier 😄

Nice collection! Great story too. I too have only recently discovered the world of watch collecting, having owned quite a number of bad watches in the past. But I'm here now and in really enjoying this "hobby" if I dare call it that.

By the way, Casio is God Tier, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. 😉

·

Welcome!

Nice collection - I think my favorite piece is the Seiko (second row, on the right).

How do you like the Brew? I am thinking to get one..

·

Welcome!!!👋🏻😄

I mean honestly, even when I'm able to get a Tudor or Omega or A. Lange & Söhne, I'll never stop getting Seiko or Casios 😅

I don't know if I would say one is better than the other (we're excluding Grand Seiko of course) because both companies make excellent movements. I'd say they are on par with each other. Seiko and Casio are two of the "Three Kings" from Japan. (The other being Citizen.) 😎

Well I also meant in regards to quality. Like...Casio was a better quality watchmaker than Seiko. Now, I understand that both brands have their strengths in different areas.

Ok, that's a good point. ✔

Ok, you're gonna need to explain this one to me. 🤣 My mind is blown! 🤯 What's not to like about Citizen?!? 😜

They're so chunky and big and a lot of their divers are quartz instead of mechanical and about 80% of them do not look good. Their JDM models are so much better. I understand that there are benefits with having quartz over mechanical and I also understand that Citizen has done a lot for the industry but nahhhhh. Big paaassssss. Later in May, I'll be getting my first Citizen ever and it's a JDM. Cuz it looks better than everything stateside 🤷 I get that my words are fighting words for some folks, but that's my honest input. Big pass on allllllllll of that.

Fighting words for some, maybe, but not for me. I am a librarian, and as such, I enjoy a good, academic discussion about any topic, but especially about watches! 😃

I am a Citizen fan, but I also understand how some people have different preferences, especially when it comes to case size. I am a big guy (8" wrist, 6'1", 345 lbs.) so I tend to gravitate towards larger case sizes; anything smaller than 39mm looks like a kid's watch on my wrist. So far, my collection ranges between 42mm and 47mm, with an additional outlier watch that comes in at 52mm. (I listed it separate, because it's the only watch I own that is REALLY big.)

As for quartz vs. automatic, yes, each serves a different purpose. What impresses me about Citizen is that the quartz movements in their dive watches are all solar-powered ("Eco-Drive") so there's no battery to change, ever, and you still have the convenience of quartz accuracy. 😃

Oh for sure. It's definitely impressive and no small feat. If someone's about that, more power to you. But for me, nah. I can't. I do recognize that that with about 90% of quartz watches, I'm not a fan of because of the actual ticking. The sweeping motion that mechanicals provide are sooooo much more pleasing.

I will agree with you on the sweeping second hand thing; I love watching the sweep on my Grand Diver. But honestly, I can't hear the ticking on my quartz watches. Maybe I am getting old, LOL 🤣 But if I WERE able to hear it, I think I'd be in the same boat as you 😃

I have heard that Timex supposedly ticks loud, but I don't own any Timexes! 🤪But yeah, that smooth sweep is what it's all about! 😎

Yeah nah, with my Timex Marlin, that movement is pretty dang loud lol. That's neither here nor there though.
