Watches from each decade - Share your watches Part 7: The 70s (The final chapter)

Since this was an attempt to drag out old vintage watches from your boxes I think the 70s is a suitable ending to this serie. It has been a fun task and all of you who has contributed and/or followed the serie has been great sports of doing so.

Image

I spent my teenage years in the 70s. My school years before university and everything that comes with that. My, then mandatory, military service was my first year from home. I remember all this as a happy period personally. I have, however, really tried to remember and find great positive events in the world happening during this period. My memory and search has failed. Instead the big events is drastic but sad. War, military coups, terror attacks, energy chrisis….

Image

Instead the positives I find in the popular culture. Movies, music and fashion. Not all has matured with grace.

This hasn’t:

It was also a drastic period for traditional watch manufacturer with affordable quartz watches impacted an already struggling industry. Design wise the case shapes went, if not over board, at least more experimental. Some of the designs were very succesful, like the Royal Oak, becoming one of the classics of today.

How about this...

Image

Is it from the 70s?  I don't know, but it certainly could be from the 70s.  What is it you ask?  No idea.  What I do know is that it says "Geneva" on the face, so it's obviously Swiss.  Then again, it also says "Hong Kong" on the face, but that's probably a mistake.  We'll ignore the fact the movement doesn't say anything except for a sticker the says Hong Kong something something.  On the upside, the movement looks super clean.  Like too clean to be from the 70s, because nobody would bother working on a POS like this.

So yeah, probably not Swiss, probably not from the 70s.  I was just bored.

70s? Why not.

I bought this Zodiac new from a jewelry store in the Dedham ,Mass. Mall in 1976 on sale for 100 bucks plus 5 bucks tax. It's led a long amd storied life and, after a restoration and a NOS dial and bezel replacement a few years back, is again in the rotation.

This 1970 Spaceview was purchased pre-owned a few years ago and is humming along quite well.

I really like the case of the Zodiac. Well the whole watch looks great. Lovely blue tone. Is the dial color as when you bought it originally?

·

Here's what the original dial/bezel looked like and why I had it restored. Everything else is original. The replacement migt have faded some over time but a far better alternative. I like patina but this was a bit too far gone.

I have a small selection of watches from the early 70s. Typically with a cushion case or larger C case.

King Seiko 5626-7000 from 1970 with the original "jingly-jangly" bracelet. I wear it from time to time, and it keeps excellent time too.

The only watch from the 70s in my collection is my 1675.  Looks great in any decade!

How come the last installment?  You totally need to do the 80s!

·

Mate, you got to do the 80s and the 90s. Those fit the definition of vintage and a lot of us needs any excuse to show off our watches.

Very nice. That design could be a bestseller today.

I hardheartedly agree with that!

·

Wish I still had this little 34mm watch. It was from ‘72, about 16 years before I was born.

70's style at its finest, remember the Bulova Coffin bracelets?  I had one back in the day and it was fantastic.

I don't at all but it's very interesting. My earliest watch memories are from the early seventies and a friend having an led watch with a red display ? Casio perhaps?

This has to be my most archetypically 70s watch...
