Who actually owns a Sub!?

Despite being arguably the most iconic watch in the world, it strikes me that the Humble Submariner may be rarer than one might think. I certainly don't see many in the wild - I think I've spotted more APs than Submariners. And even on WC, I don't see many in the WRUW or SOTCs... So who actually owns a Sub!?

I've spotted more Subs than any other watch out in the wild. On several of those occasions, the wearer has not been the slightest bit interested in talking watches with me.

I have had the same thoughts about the Submariner for a long time.

YT is full of blasés collectors claiming to have owned many 4 digit, 5 digit and 6 digit reference Rolexes and are moving towards Moser & Cie and Lange und Söhne because they are so bored with Rolex.

Except that, in real life, seeing any Submariner outside watch GTGs is not so common. I have an office job in the busiest European business area, just West of Paris, only one colleague has a SeaDweller, and I have never spotted anyone else rocking a Sub, even in meetings with bankers and lawyers. OK, I've seen a few in Dubai and Singapore, and the odd one in London, but really nothing compared to the Apple Watch.

Don't know how many Subs Rolex sell each year (50 to 100 k ?), but spread across the entire World, it is not a lot. Maybe Oisín O Malley in Venice is hoarding them all ?

Would say the same by the way about the Omega SeaMaster that alledgedly anyone and their dog has owned at least once since Pierce Brosnan played James Bond.

I've never seen one in the wild. My friends all have DJs, none of them are watch people (despite one of them working at an AD for several years). It's not something I'd ever be interested in.

I usually spot subs on bored rich kids working as servers in the best TO restaurants, almost as if they needed connections to get a job dishing out dishes. I once spotted a guy installing a chantelier in a pizza joint near my office when I was still working, hired him to do some electrical upgrades in my building substructure, young man arrives to quote the job wearing a gold and steel sub, he is a 3rd generation electrical contractor. Offers to buy the Navitimer 1461 Limited Edition watch on my wrist either for 5k or the job. Lol. Young guys have no respect.

·

My friends have subs and I should have gotten one years ago when it was easily obtainable. The main reason why I didn’t want one then (besides cost) was that every other person in Asia wore one and every other one of those was a fake.

·

I have a friend with a Rolex or two or three. I presume that one may be a Sub but I really never cared enough to be certain, and I think he wears other stuff more frequently.

Here in the States, any medical appointment seems to offer a high chance of seeing one on a physician's wrist if you look for it. I think that is literally the only place I've spotted the few wild ones I've seen.

I had the pleasure of meeting and diining with a retired French barrister his wife also a barrister a few years ago when my wife and I took a river cruise met the couple on one of the planned excursions. Their daughter also a lawyer worked for Hermes. Man lectured me on a variety of topics while we all dined on pressed duck including how the French did not embrace luxury items that were second level including and especially Rolex. Black Prada shoes were considered throw away, Hermes was acceptable while Goyard was superior to Louis Vuitton, fois gras was food for the gods too good for tourists.

DJs aren't my bag either. I would definitely like a Sub, I just never see them.

I bought the SMP and it’s stopped me from going after the Sub. But I have some family and friends who wear them.

I’d like a mid/late 90’s if I was to ever get one and then somehow stick in on an oysterflex rubber band.

looks like you're in the minority.. Maybe it's all the Deutsche Finance Bros, buying them!?

I'd argue the Speedmaster is the most iconic Watch.

lol - and yet; they were tourists on a package cruise, fraternizing with Canadians!? I'm calling Bullshido.

Granted, Rolex are relatively affordable in the grand scheme of things. But I would be shocked if most of the remaining french aristocracy didn't have a rolex in their collections...

I noticed that the US did follow the more classical stereotypes of being wealthy - Golf, Cigars, Rolex..

No they were locals that we met perhaps in Vernon. The man was preachy but interesting.

I have the competitor!! The OMEGA Seamaster Professional

In some circles, there is no competition..

Which is the clear winner, depends on which circle you’re in!

I accidently clicked I do have a sub, when I am indeed subless. So minus one count for that

I discovered you can actually change your vote if you really care about the science.

Fricking loved that video as a teenage boy.

Apple Watches... Apple Watches everywhere…

Do you think they do have nice watches, but never wear them. Or do you think the Apple Watch is the new quartz crisis!?

·
Bondage

I dunno! I would imagine part of it is Bond, part that the SUB is just seen as a very rough and rugged high-end watch that'll do it all.

And I guess if you’re buying bullets, you’ve literally got money to burn.

late to that comment, but I guess US did manage to effectively push this classical stereotype further to the point of "appropriation".

When I hear "golf, cigars and Rolex" I either think about GTA Vice City, or any fictional Wall Street baller. Both are products of American pop culture and to the certain point are classic representatives of it. Italian mobsters in movies are playing golf, smoking cigars and wearing Rolexes. Finance brokers in a movies are playing gold, smoking cigars and wearing Rolexes.

I might be 100% wrong, but I can't associate this classic wealthy pastimes with any other country than US.

I 100% agree. Having lived and worked all over Europe, then moving to NYC, I noticed a significant difference in the way people react to organizational hierachy and wealth. It felt quite old school.

Yeah, European workspaces are, welp, weird)

I remember working for a Dutch company, our CEO could give you a very hard time in the morning, but bring you a pack of Corona by the end of the day, because "IT"S BEER TIME BOYS".

After I quit he once invited me to get drunk at Friday evening, it was a wild, wild ride. Had a great time. It's a miracle we didn't end up in a banter that night)

Hmmmm that’s a really good question! When I used to wear my Galaxy S3 Frontier, I felt obligated to wear it over my other watches because it had so much functionality, but as it aged and I eventually switched to an iPhone, I used it less and less, getting bothered by the notifications and all that, and just missing analog. I don’t really have an urge for an Apple Watch, because I just got tired of the smart watch dynamic.

I would guess that it’s really a spectrum. For most I assume it’s their only watch, and they look at it as another, smaller “phone” that tracks health stuff too. For others, it’s a daily driver and they bust out the nice watch for fancy occasions, but really I have no idea. The watch for the not-a-watch-person I’m guessing.

I own the Tudor pelagos 39mm does that count 🙄

Definitely a good substitute! But I wanted to understand the ratio of actual sub owners.

I saw a Sub in the wild for the first time in a long time this week. A German consultant. No Date 14060m (probably). Nice watch - small and low key enough to be worn in the office.
