Cartier vs Panerai

Ok so I’m preparing my next purchase. I’ve been looking for a smart-ish watch that can be worn to the office and also with casual jeans tops joggers etc. budget of around £6k I’ve managed to narrow down my search to these 2 models. I’d like for you to choose one of the two and tell me why! Side note - some of the watches that didn’t make the cut - BB58 Navy BBPro Longines Spirit 37mm Aquaterra 38mm Moonwatch Nomos Tetra Breitling Top Time

Just a few photos of the two

Personally, I would go with the Panerai.  They are UNMISTAKABLE from 30 yards away!  The only other watch brand that I can think of that has that kind of instant recognizability is Rolex.  But, unlike Rolex, only enthusiasts will know what a Panerai is.  And when I do see Panerai's on people's wrists, I always think to myself...

It's a considered choice.  Whereas the Cartier is so pretty that any muggle could simply stumble upon it and decide to purchase it, yeah?

·

I am extremely unhappy to have had to vote for a Panerai, but it is less ungainly than the Cartier. The Longines is the only watch on the list that I don't dislike, so feel free to dismiss my opinion altogether.

I hear you. I can’t split them based on looks alone and I’m not too big on movements. As long as I know they are both respectable I’m happy.

I think these two are equally recognisable tho I get your point about the Panerai.

This is why I’m stuck!

with regards to your gif. I’m married so no, you’re wrong 😅😂😭😭 (not as much as I’d like anyway haha)

No I can’t dismiss that!
I thought I compiled a list of absolute worldies and you don’t like any of them!
explain yourself Sir.

·

Both are cool watches. The due is the one Panerai I can see adding to the collection.

·

Had to pick the Santos because I can't deal with a Panerai with 30m wr, that's so off brand

·

They are esteemed choices, just not my cups of tea. Anyway, I have problems seeing a Roman-numeral Cartier as a casual watch. A Tank with a leather strap, sure, but not this.

·

Cartier seems like a timeless classic

·

I’m stepping WAY out of my comfort zone here, as these are not brands I normally consider. I did vote for the Paneri, but paused quite a bit as the 30m WR is truly off brand. However, one thing that’s put me off on Paneri before has been the bulk, so 38mm is what won the day. With Cartier, I think they make great watch, but too iconic of a jewelery brand for me. But then, they did change the crown that I can never get past.

OK, change my vote! Wait, I can’t 🤷‍♂️

I’m useless!

·

I would go with Panerai for its unique looks, functionality, and toughness. I don't really take WR into consideration since I still wear an apple watch for all my snorkeling expeditions and when it rains. Cartier Santos #cartier for me is a watch with Roman numerals. You can pretty much get that look on any other watch. I have Raymond Weil #raymondweil that I bought from Costco ($500) and looks nice.

I tried one on somewhat accidentally when I went in to look at a 42mm submersible. i couldn’t keep my eyes off the due. Stunning watch in person.

my wallet was stunned at the price, so we walked out empty handed.

😅😅 it is overpriced I feel. If it was around £4k mark it would already be on my wrist. But at 6.5.. hmmm

·

Accidentally voted for the Santos. 100% would be the Panerai.

·

I have small wrists so this size looks good on me. I get where you’re coming from though.
the santos is so effortlessly beautiful and the Panerai is unexpectedly beautiful.

No the Cartier Santos in medium doesn’t have a date. I prefer it that way. Maintains the classical look for me.

Got it.

I actually think between the two the Cartier. The history and the story of how it was created by Santos Dumont is amazing.

·

I recently tried on both watches. I wasn’t a fan of the Panarai fit. I like the look very much when I see them on other men, but, they’re not for me. The Santos (which I didn’t think I’d like) was terrific on my wrist. I liked the new large model, with a blue face. The easy switch bracelet/strap makes it pretty versatile. I’m not a huge fan of Roman numerals, but I really liked it. It’s also a historic watch. I own a Roadster and Drive and I’m a new convert to Cartier. Good luck picking.

·

Santos.  Don't care for the Due line.

As an owner of the Medium Santos on my 19CM, 7.5” wrist, its got my vote. A smaller Panerai doesn’t feel right, like it’s trying to be something it isn’t, if that makes sense.

·

My vote goes to the Santos. Some of Cartier‘s jewelry goes for the same price so think of it as getting a free iconic watch. 😀

·

So as much as I am a fan of Cartier, and think that the Due should have 100m WR at least, I voted for Panerai.

Because it's such a cool looking watch. It's like everything it's not supposed to be.

·

I love both watches and your other considerations.  I just feel that the Santos is a great formal dress watch that doesn't dress down well.  I love the Santos with a tux or nice suit.  I think the Panerai works with a suit but is killer peeking out from under a nice sweater or with a sleeved shirt and sport jacket.

·

The one thing I don't like about the Santos (and I voted for it in this poll) is that with my 6.75" wrist, I think I would prefer the wrist feel of the medium size. But the medium doesn't have two things I want. First, the date window. Second, the blue dial. You can only get those in the large configurations. And that bugs me.

·

I don't know, I must be biased, but I just can't fall in love with Panerai in general... The Santos is one of the most iconic watches out there, so it is definitely my choice of the two

It looks so good on the blue leather aswell. I have smaller wrists at around 6.4 inches and I feel this Panerai is the best fit on me. Also it’s the most wearable to the office which is an important factor.
I love the Cartier but I feel it’s more delicate and not sure it could be a daily.
How often do you wear yours?

Delicate? It’s a watch that can handle any daily use. I wear mine 3-4 days a week for work and play, which is great with the bracelet and strap options. The Panerai is a great choice, it’s just a very different watch IMHO and doesn’t give you a timeless watch with historical significance. Original Radiomir cases do, and maybe you should consider a 38mm of that line.

Ok it’s good to know the Cartier can take it. Just a bunch of YT videos saying it’s a scratch magnet and handle with care etc.

the radiomir doesn’t have the crown guard which is actually a big draw for me on this watch. I’ve mentioned previously on another thread I prefer watches with these quirks e.g my SMP with the helium escape valve.

·

I will choose Santos over the two, but if you change the Due to the newly released Luminor Quaranta, then I will change my mind. The Quaranta has all the iconic Panerai features but in 40mm, and 100 WR. It would be the better choice for me.

·

Voted for the Santos (maybe biased because I personally love that one), because the Panerai looks a bit small on you plus the water resistance is a joke.

·

Voted PAM cause I’m a PAM guy lover. However get it on the leather strap not the metal bracelet….. also quick change for the rubber in the summer….. however you should buy what you like and to hell with what I think lol
