What other watches use the seagull chronograph movement?

Hello everyone!

Looking for recommendations. Here's the deal, my friend is gifting her husband a watch for his 50th birthday, and she's asking me, the watch geek boi for recommendations, I chatted him before and got a good sense of what kind of watches he likes and expressed particular interest in the see through caseback of the seagull, him being an engineer and all. So I'm looking for a watch that houses this movement that have a display caseback but I only know the 1963 (which he doesn't like the dial side of), Baltic, and Lorier ones. Trying to stick with more original designs, no clone-homages.

Which other watches with this movement are out there?

- Cheers!

Sugess makes a few designs with the Seagull and they are inexpensive. I have this one that's an homage to a Breitling that I really enjoy.

Studio Underd0g and Haim both make watches using the ST19 based movements.

Ohh forgot about SU, might want something more conservative. Will check out Haim. Thanks!

Dude, you think your friend's husband might be interested in an Atelier Wen Perception salmon dial?

Image

I have a reservation for the next batch to be released, but don't think I'll move forward. Given that, if anyone is interested in getting it, they can have mine. Only issue is that the movement is obscured given the rotor.

Thanks man! Automatic is good too, better even, but I think looking for something more conservative, this guy is a non watch guy.

Phylida Speedy Homage - under $200 on Ali, but limited availability.

Hemel also uses ST19s.

·

How about my watch i posted yesterday on WRUW? I admit it's a homage.

My Hemel Air league does

Red Star makes a nice bull head chronograph using the Sea Gull ST1901.

The best Sea-Gull movements come from their factory because they put in the work for a good watch and charge more. The rest make a cheaper version but quality is a minefield. A non-watch guy is better off with a quartz or a smartwatch. Either a chrono or a GMT. Don't forget that chinese warranties are spotty at best and to service one of their mech chrono's will cost you more than the price of the watch.

Only knowing this

50

engineer

married

and the poor woman has to get this watch (no waitlist)...

Smaller watch: Tudor Ranger, Pelagos 39, Tudor Royal

Larger watch: Tudor BB, BB Pro, Omega Speedy, Seamaster

Budget end: Longines Spirit Zulu

My reason is this, as fun as one might like a sugess movement and finishing, I wouldn't want a toyota camry for my 50th, or find out from others that I got one. Give me a made in china watch for my 51st birthday. Even if he isn't a watch guy, it wouldn't be fair to him. I suggest a watch that can be serviced 20 years from now and 20 years after that passed on.

The sugeuss movement suggested would be 500 to service... not sure one would based on the value of the watch... now what...

Most of the watches I've listed are boring and less inspired but they are clean in look and will be a good vintage classic later. Good design langauge. Looking vintage now should not be how your friend should feel on his 50th...

It's not like a Toyota Camry though is it, it's more like a Maserati (having a Ferrari engine)

The sugess has the seagull movement that is Swiss through and through.

Personally I have two of the watches on your list, the speedy and seamaster, I bought them myself, for myself, I have little or no emotional attachment to them but I am very proud of them, I can't wait to get my seagull 1963 next week because my wife bought it for me for valentines, it's the first watch she has ever bought for me. The fact she understands the history and appreciates why I would want it means so much more than the value.

That's pretty specific I would find out if he is flexible and that will give him more options.

Yeah, I haven't talked to het nor do I know the budget, etc. I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm not buying a watch for me right now so I need a project.

My apologies, the seagull movement is not a Swiss movement. If it was your sub clone would not be $200. The seagull movement is a much cheaper to get than its ETA equivalent by up to 10x. I know if one of my seagull movements craps out on my prototype watches I would just swap it out. If the MT5612 or 8J55 movements crap out I am sending it out for service. The services is 4x less than the cost of the movement. You know this to be true with the omegas you own or you would of bought the chinese Maserati equivalent and saved the $4000. I like my clone eta 2824 but they are just that, a camry, reliable but disposable.

Simply not true, you must be confused, the seagull movement is the hand wound modern day Swiss Venus 175, now produced in China by the Tianjin factory. It's Swiss. Which I'm sure you are fully aware of.

Now it might not be to your taste, and I fully appreciate that, but it isn't rubbish and it certainly doesn't make it any lesser of a movement just because it has a lower price tag.

·

Grand Seiko spring drive.

The engineer will love the idea of taking mechanical energy, using it to create electricity to power a quartz for accuracy. Search YouTube for videos about how the spring drive works.

Last time I checked the Swiss were in Europe and not China. The market price says they are not equivalent. Never said they were rubbish. Just pointed out you could replace it for less than a service cost.

I'm honestly not sure if you are being serious. Do you know the history of the seagull movement?

·

It's a great movement! But I don't want to pay 500+ for a Studio Underdog with a seagull movement. Don't get me wrong, I want a Studio Underdog watch. Just can't bring myself to pay so much when I can have this for half the price

do you have a link to where i can find their homages?

·

Just google "Sugess AliExpress Store" that should get you to the right place.

·

I would love to find one of the StudioUnderdog watches. But they are a tad bit expensive! But the dials are amazing!

The Arcus Tropos uses an ST19 that has been modified into a monopusher. If you want something super unique like this, then this moght make a cool watch. Don't know if it's available anymore.

I just visited the Seagull watches headquarters this past Friday. Their reception staff mentioned that some of their partners collaborate to customize designs under the Seagull brand name, which are then sold exclusively. It's a very interesting approach.
