Travelling with watches

Do you travel with watches? Do you have special travel watches? How do you store them? How many do you take with you? What kind of watches do you bring? Excited to hear your answers!

I'm on my way to Berlin by the way, and these are the watches I take with me (essentially my entire collection).

For me it kind of depends where I’m going, why and for how long. I’m travelling back to Edinburgh this Summer and will probably be taking this.

Have the Orient on with the rest in the case. I’ll be there for a couple of weeks and this will have me covered. Last time I went to the country for a week I had my G-Shock and my beater in this case

A weekend meet up with old mates I’ll strap on the G-Steel and have nothing else with me as you never know what might happen. 🤷‍♂️

·

Agree with @Matt84, depends on where, how long, and the purpose. For practicality, I wear one and pack the other in one of my socks.

·

Depends on the destination, duration and activities. I aim for versatility, so usually a diver, a 36mm Explorer or if I’m traveling intercontinentally, something with a GMT hand.

For storage of multiple watches, I have a small Pelican case where I can directly drop in the pillows from my regular case which is super convenient.

Nice selection. Adapting to the trip is probably one of the most important things to do.

Haha. That's a nice idea!

Sounds good! I neither have the watches nor the cases/pouches to do something similar 😂

·

When I travel I decide for exactly one watch that I’ll wear during my stay. I don’t like the thought of traveling with jewelry. My watches are not insured, so it would always be a high risk.

My last holiday.  Walking in the lake district with a hot-tub.  Nothing overly dressy/valuable.  Summer watch (San Martin) and Beater to take the hot tub and its assorted chemicals

My philosophy on watches is the same as traveling with electronics: I bring the bare minimum, as I don't want to lose either, and they are generally not the focus of the trip. (If it is a business trip with a formal even I may bring a dress watch.) One of my regular watches for urban destinations, G-Shock while camping or on the beach. Internationally, when I have to change time zones or use public transportation I usually bring a quartz watch. But my collection does not go on the road.

I’m actually heading out of town today for 6 days and trying to decide which watches to take with me. I just use a simple 3 watch ‘travel pod’

I'm with you.  Never quite understood the appeal of bringing a ton of watches while traveling.  Watches are rarely the focus of travel for me so it's another complication.

I once lost all my luggage in Prague when somebody broke into my locker. It included clothing, books, but also my handwritten notes I needed for my MSc. All of it was gone in a moment, and I had to travel home in just my t-shirt and my jeans. I've also seen what happens to airport luggage, something that is simply up for grabs at the luggage carousel. (Airport security checkpoints are similar.) These days I travel with items I consider expendable.

I second the idea of traveling with a single versatile watch most of the time. I realize I’ve posted a photo above with two watches in a tent, which might give off the wrong idea.

That was on a multi-week trip which included tenting, sleeping in hotels, and in small rented cabins, and with a similar variety in activities as in accommodation. My GF wore the 36mm Explorer some of the time, and I did the odd swap for it. Hadn’t that been the case I would’ve taken a single watch and not bothered to bring a storage case.

If I’m visiting family for a week or two and can travel by car (i.e. with little luggage restrictions), I’ll happily bring a total of two or three watches, but for weekend getaways or anywhere were moving about, I’ll do a single watch that stays on the wrist all day.

·

Im not sure I would want to run the risk of loosing them , I would probably just wear a G-shock tbh.

·

I don't travel much. If I do, I usually pick just one watch for the whole trip.

What's the watch with the blue dial? I kinda want one.

·

While I own a number of cases and watch rolls, these days I tend to bring just one versatile watch while traveling. It's just easer, and if I lose or damage the one, well, I still have the rest at home.

·

This just arrived from To The Hour and yes it's overkill 😂

I ditto this.  Lately the amount of watch related crime has skyrocketed in most urban areas. Its making me leery of wearing anything particularly expensive when I go travel so I'm mostly sticking with something under the radar or a modded watch that is more affordable.

·

Usually two. One versatile watch for most occasions (typically my Aqua Terra or my Oris Big Crown Pointer Date) and a G Shock if the weather forecast is particularly bad, I go somewhere that I want to be less conspicuous, or if where I will be would stress me out with my primary watch (beach, water park, roller coasters, etc.)

·

My travel watch lately has been my BPFF Bathyscaphe.  It ticks every box for any occasion or activity and it generally flies under the radar in appearance.

·

Last trip I took my SPB143 as my main and the SARB035 as a dressier backup.

Is that watch in the middle from the watchmaker I think it’s from? Felipe Pikullik?

Yes it is!

What an amazing watchmaker, congratulations on the purchase, I don’t even know if he is accepting orders at the moment. Very cool pieces!

What blue dial do you mean?

Thank you so much! He isn't anymore right now, sadly, but I think he will again in some time.

I meant the watch in the middle, the one without a minute track and a plaque at the 12 o'clock position.

It's a Felipe Pikullik Sternenhimmel. He's a cool young watchmaker from Berlin, you can look him up on Instagram.
