Its price, I cannot wait to spend 10s of Ks in a single watch, so excited!

Jokes aside, I don't have a grail watch. The watches I want the most are always the watches that I can afford at that time.

For example, when I bought my Nomos that watch was my grail at that moment:

Image

It's not worth 10s of Ks but let me tell you something, I freaking adore this watch!

I still think that the Nomos Club and the Sinn 556 are the best watches you can get for around 1K.

Do you have a grail @Unruhkloben

i don’t really have a grail but I do have watches that I probably won’t ever buy because I think it’s crazy to spend that much on a watch. I still think they are amazing. I know for the Anordain the dial is the star of the show but I really dig the hands.

As for the omega i love the lollipop second hand.

In contrast to most watch enthusiasts I really value and enjoy the movement of a watch the most. Even before the design. In my free time I take apart and reassemble off-the-shelf movements like the SW200-1. With my engineering background and my inherent curiosity I believe it’s the most fascinating part about a watch. This being said, the El Primero 3600 is what makes the Zenith Chronomaster Sport my grail watch.

Versatility in the first place. Reliable movement comes not far behind.

I love Nomos! I thought about getting one as my first luxury watch but then switched my opinion to a microbrand in the last moment :)

This is definitely a good approach to grailwatches, because yours are possible to get hold of.

I don't really have one myself, I got a bit into custom watches recently (because of my microbrand one) and I dream of beeing able to put one together without any limitations. That's probably my grail. Thanks for sharing!

That's one of my favourite Omegas as well! The anordain is stunning too! What's your watch-price limit?

If I really want to wear the watch and enjoy it. Not worrying to much about it is part of that. I think maybe most I would spend 2000€. But realistically the most watches I want to buy are around the 1000€

That's cool! I bought my microbrand watch mainly because of the movement decoration. The combination of art and engeneering was probably the reason I got into watches. If you are just looking for a high tech movement the El Primero is definitely up there, maybe alongside some ultra expensive Cartiers and, dare I say it, Richard Milles :D

Two good points!

Kudos to Bruce Williams for the picture.

I look forward to wearing this 24/7 without having to worry about it, like an "upgrade" of my Mako II.

The dial. Blows me away every time I look at it. Wouldn't have paid the price if I didn't feel that way about it

·

Being a budget watch collector (Timex only), my grail is different than most.  Most of my collection was in the price range of $150 to $300.  Having said that my grail is scheduled to arrive today.   It is the Timex American Documents watch and it cost $500.  In the world of Timex that is a pricey watch.  I wanted this watch for a while, but the price tag for a Swiss quartz just seemed too high, but I just kept thinking about it.  So I'll tell you what I like about it after I put it on my wrist.  I really love the look and the understated elegance from the pics and videos and of course the fact that they brought it back to their Connecticut headquarters to assemble by hand.

If we are talking about grailwatches as something I actually see myself owning then size, lug to lug and thickness is go or no for me. I can appreciate and luster over many watches that I don’t see myself wearing and own.

If the criterias for size is met then the dial is the most important followed by the the case shape and the design of the lugs. Movement is last in the sence that I don’t really care as long as it is a solid working one.

That's a nice price point! You can find very nice watches for that money!

This is in fact a no-worries watch! Cool!

I want to see those wrist shots mate, you can't leave us hanging like that 💯

Sorry Brother, I put them up elsewhere.  Here it is.  So far loving it.  I also had another watch come today which I also love.  Here they are.  Hope you enjoy!

my grail will come in pieces with an actual swiss SW200 movement

It's not as dire as it sounds.  At some point I realized that, for me at least, different watches provide different things.  Some of those things (finishing, novel movements, etc) are correlated with price and some are not (the relatively cheap thrills of a wonderful Seiko dial).  As I get older, all those things are going to change for me.

So I guess I don't believe in two things that I think a grail implies: a watch that satisfies all my wants and an endpoint to the collecting journey.  I frankly do not ever expect to complete my watch collection.

In many ways, I think it's probably healthier for me as a collector to try not to complete the  journey too early.  If I were convinced that I had only one more watch in me, I'd probably buy some crazy hyper watch at a bad price that I wouldn't even wear often because it would not suit many parts of my life.

I couldn't eat filet mignon every day.  Doesn't mean I don't enjoy it, but sometimes you want a fruit salad.  Sometimes, you gotta have a greasy bowl of $2 curry laksa in a roadside stall in Malaysia.

Mostly trying not to rush it, you know?

You're so right! Great text! A grail for me is just the watch I want the most at the moment. I don't think there is a watch to end my journey of collecting either, and one watch just can't satisfy everything that you want. Thanks for sharing!

For me it is the history and rarity.

I don't even know that one 😅

Very cool though!

Couldn't afford one, well not for now. But this will be my retirement watch and at that point probably my one watch collection 👍

The case design and size, their movements are some of the best in house movements around for that amount of money and those dials, come on what's not to love. I wanted the 39mm until they released these and now, well I want this one 💯

That is a 5513 MilSub.  A special version of Rolex that was purchased by the MOD in the UK and issued to service members.  There were only  about 2000 purchased by the MOD and of that number only a fraction survived either through attrition or watchmakers converting them to standard 5513s.  There was a point in time were a second hand 5513 retail version was worth more than the MilSub.  Not anymore.  A MilSub in good condition with the original bezel and original sword hands will set you back between $400K-$500K if you can get your hands on one.  Super rare.

Crazy. The story and the price you pay for these things. They were like mid range seikos back then...

Mine is the ALS 1815 Chronograph in white gold with the black dial. Here’s the single part of it I love the most:
