Pleasantly Surprised

Above, you see a watch my now wife, then girlfriend, bought for me 12 years ago.

It's HUGE, clocking in with a 56mm case, 24mm lug width, a 64mm L2L and 17mm thick.

Then we see the, yes, temperature & humidity gauges on the left.

Considering where we each were financially at that time, this HAS to be a quartz watch, right?

Nope.

Image

Color me shocked.

Would you have thought it a quartz?

My first thought was that it was a quartz, but then I saw the "Automatic" text, and thought it was an automatic movement for the time with some sort of electronics for the temperature & humidity displays. Pretty cool that it's all mechanical. At 56mm, that would make an awesome desk clock.

·

What a beast of a watch. Soooo many cool complications! Is that a moon phase too?

Out of interest, do you think the temperature and humidity gauges are at all accurate? Or is it purely a reading of the conditions under the watch? 😆

·

Um, no? It says "automatic" on the dial.

😜

·

Watchmaker: How many complications would you like?

Me: Yes

Yeah, that is what I intend to do with it.

·

Wow what a wrist hog! I like that watch due to the uniqueness of that timepiece. I did notice right away automatic so quartz didn't enter my feeble mind lol. So what movement is in that German watch?

·

Wait, are you telling me there is an affordable triple calendar movement (not sure if it's a legit moonphase or hokey day/night feature) at a reasonable price regardless of power source?

It might be a moonphase. TBH, we've moved a couple times since I got it and I've lost all paperwork for it.

I have tested the temp gauge and it is moderately accurate, so I'm gonna say the humidity one is as well. Why? because I've seen the insides of the vintage Temp/humidity/barometer combos and they have the same type of coils as seen in the watch.

Would you believe I never paid attention to the 'Automatic' on the dial until today? LOL

When I acquired it, I was interested in watches, but had nowhere near the free time I have now, so I didn't really look into & study the watch. It was interesting enough to me just as the watch itself and there's so much on the dial.

I've lost the papers that came with it, and the movement is not marked that I can see, so I shall have to do some digging to find out the movement.

That's an amazing piece in your collection, especially with the sentimentality behind it 🙂 I find it funny that it maintains a chapter ring when there's no hands that will be sweeping past it

Yeah, it's a real odd duck in many ways, but to me, that's a big part of it's charm.

And if you notice, that chapter ring is also off by about 20 degrees or so clockwise. So strange. LOL

·

That is purely amazing. So many questions... Why does the dial have markings (what appears to be seconds) on the outside rim of the dial?? Is the crown on the left side connected to nothing?? How do you adjust all those complications?!

I say you put this beast on a Paracord strap and wear it over a jacket when you go outside. Even crazier, make a new dial for it (3D print or mill or something) and turn it into a dashboard indicator style watch:

This obviously entails a lot of work for you, but it can be outsourced as well.

I thought it was off too initially -- then I realized that it's aligned with the small watch face (60 is over the 12 o'clock position of the watch, 30 is directly below the 6 o'clock, 45 is in the proper position, etc.).

My other half calls these oversize pieces "Look at Me" pieces.....lol

Yeah, I feel like that is what the designers have in mind. LOL

As a keepsake its awesome because as a romantic gift you get to make the 2 scales on the left increase while the autowind works. Nice to see old school complications.

That is probably the weirdest thing I've ever seen and I absolutely love it 😂

Too massive for my wrist, but awesome enough to wish I had a larger wrist, lol❤

That is funny not seeing the automatic on the dial. However I can see why you missed it when there's so much going on that dial.

I'll keep an eye out for your update post. I love that watch! I wear mine kinda big lol

🍻

·

Holy guacamole. That is one awesome watch

Bet Shaq would be jealous of such a watch.

Reminds me of Glycine 3 times zones.

On the money!

I want one of these now! It's a remarkable piece of engineering.

I used to be all about the big brands but now it's thing like this that I love.

Imagine the value this will have in 100 years time. Find me another.

That piece is truly insane. You can actually track 4 time zones at once using three independent movements - 2 2824-2s and a 2893-2.

Indeed insane. Very underrated watch maker in my books.
