Watches we hate:

WC is a very tolerant place and open to all kinds of watches…which is cool…BUT

Everyone has got something that they absolutely despise and now it’s your assignment to tell us what that is.

I‘ll start:

Wooden watches. The concept of using funky materials for cases is commendable but wooden watches to me are just the most cringiest thing ever.

I forgot about these lol. My friend bought a cheap one from Amazon and the lug broke in a few days. It wasn't the nicest.

Wooden watches probably takes the cake for cringe. Fashion watches comes next

Anything MB&F and throw the Omega Ploprof in for good measure.

Na, for me that’s the category dumb but cool.😂

Your looking at it all wrong, next time your late for your wife or girlfriend or maybe an important meeting, you don’t have to lie anymore. Just set the watch on fire then tell everyone your late because time just went poof up in smoke. See how valuable a wooden watch can be!!!😂

Can‘t argue with that, can you?

I like the look of wooden watches. I’ve worked with wood and some grains are just so beautiful!

Ngl I really hate Patek Philippe Nautiluses (Nautili?) and Aquanauts. They look horrendously cheap, with a stupid looking case and dial for THOUSANDS

Worst offender is the Patek Philippe. It’s an even uglier Daniel Wellington that’s priced a lot bc “mUH pAtEk”

AP sucks too, all they do is beat the decent looking Royal Oak to death

By this I mean Patek Ellipse

There was a swiss watch brand with stone cases back in the 1980s, wasn't there? 🤔

Oof

·

Haha, got me there😂

·

Ok, I’ll play:

  • >14mm thick watches

  • Insane lug to lug on <38mm watches

  • Porous material made watches (wood, ceramic, etc)

  • Straight lugs (steinhart, yes, you)

  • Watches made for the sole purpose of showing off based on price with no real value associated with it.

Anything Genta after 1970

Round lume plots

Dates disrupting dials

Cyclops (obviously)

Jangly bracelets

Hype... Inc BS stories/fake history

Think those aren't too controversial (?)

Id add titanium, really not my thing & double down on round indices/lume plots. Really don't like 'em.

Fashion watches.

Hate is a strong word; I don't hate material objects. I can dislike them, I can find them "cringeworthy," or even find them absolutely disgusting (I'm thinking of those so-called "art" watches with naked women on them---I mean, come on, really? Not cool at all.) But I've never seen any material object that would elicit from me the investment of a strong emotion like hatred.

The watches that I dislike the most are the ones that deviate too far from tradition. Like that weird watch that has the guy floating in a pool on a yellow floatie. To me, that's too jarring, and extremely cringeworthy. The same goes for most of the MB&F stuff. They don't look like watches; I wouldn't call them cringeworthy, but they are definitely weird and jarring to look at. But to be fair, most of those watches do have an elegant, artistic quality to them, but if I had one, the last thing I would do is wear it on my wrist. I'd just put it in a display case as a decoration. For me, it has to look like a watch before I will put it on my wrist.

I am all for innovation, new designs, etc. But a watch (by my personal criteria---your mileage may vary) has to stay within certain boundaries of tradition, or it's no longer a watch (at least to me.) Here's my grail watch. This watch has an exciting, innovative, exquisite design, that stays within those "certain boundaries of tradition":

No, I have to correct you there. That may be true for some people, but I actually do hate Rolex, Tudor, and to a lesser extent Omega.

It's not dislike. I dislike pickles. I dislike coffee. I dislike dogs. Dislike means that I can tolerate the existence of something.

In the case of Rolex and Tudor, I absolutely despise everything about their companies and their watches. Omega, I dislike intensely, if you want to put it that way, but that's still hate enough for me.

I also feel that I need to correct you on your assertion that the opinions of haters are not important. For instance, I hate greed, injustice, and racism, as do many others. If we didn't hate racism then racism (although some would argue that it's a natural state akin to tribalism which developed as a survival skill in caveman days) would still be the way of the world today. It's okay to hate.

Out of interest, why do you hate Rolex and Tudor?

·

I don’t hate any watch or watch brand, but I think square watches, especially non- smart watches are kinda ugly

My vote for most trash watch material is plastic (looking at you Swatch)

Technically their bioceramic is made of trash, so you're not wrong 🤣

The thing about "fashion watches" though is it's a large and kind of meaningless category that might include complete crap . . . and watches that could be considered heirlooms to be passed down depending on how snobby we are being about the metrics.

·

I would never buy one b/c I like my watches to last several lifetimes, but I do they can look cool and are interesting. If people know what they are getting themselves into then I'm not going to knock it.

·

Any watch on a Nato. Not hate, it just looks ridiculous.

·

I have to say I am pretty much open to any watch along the spectrum, but what I really don't like is when a brand produces a load of junk and attempts to sell it as if it were properly constructed.

Y'all would have seen my rant on Stauer before (look it up if you missed it). As egalitarian as I like to be...I despise Stauer for selling people junk and ripping them off.

Here's the turd I'm referencing (I mean I had to buy one of their watches to properly evaluate and critique it)...

Please don't "like" this watch as it is utter garbage...

I had completely suppressed that memory, for good reason.

I just read your post on this watch out of curiosity, and I still don’t see, what‘s wrong with the watch? How does the lack of built quality manifest? Because on the pictures it looks fine for the price.

Great question...

That's how pictures can deceive...looks good in the picture...

However, the quality of the components are incredibly cheap...the movement doesn't function properly...it's terrible with accuracy...the strap feels like pleather...I could go on, but you get the point.

Easy to be deceived by a decent photo with the right lighting.

·

I thought about this, but there are very few watches I hate. They include:

a) Absolute throw-away watches, stuff you buy for $5, and they look like something you won at Chuck E. Cheese.

b) Brands that exist for shopping-channels only, and I mean those that pretend to be of high value, but are really just blinged-up cheap stuff to fool the unsuspecting.

c) Watches suffering from cowbell product management. Last year's watch was blue, and this year's model is even a brighter shade of blue. Plus we increased the water resistance to pressures not found on this planet. Why? Because there is a spec-comparison going on somewhere.

·

"Tolerant" is one of the luckiest words in the English language. When did "tolerance" become a good thing? Nobody "tolerates" a good steak dinner, a great work of art, or a beautiful sunset. No, to tolerate something, it has to be kinda lousy.

Watches with Cartoons on their dials... 🤮
