How important is it to have a good (possible expensive) Watch Box / Case?

This is something I've been wondering about now. Currently I'm storing my watches in a relatively cheap SGD$ 20 (US$ 15) case which I got from an online store. It lets me store 10 watches, so I thought it was a steal! The box has some kind of imitation leather patterning on the exterior. The connection between the box lid and the rest of the box is this silly little fabric strip. The cushions are somewhat soft, but they feel quite stiff and hard when I store my watches with steel bracelets (harder to adjust). I worry that it might damage my watch's steel bracelets in the long term? What do you all think? I eagerly await the wisdom of fellow watch collectors and enthusiasts! I use cheap Amazon watch boxes and don't have a problem with them. But they need to be functional and offer the necessary protection.

·

My watches sit on top of my dresser... If they can handle the rigors of being worn on a wrist, they can sit pretty much anywhere.

·

While not to the level of a Buben & Zorweg or a Brown Watch Safe, for me, I feel my storage solution should accomplish a few things:

  • Nicely display the watches to make it easy to select one in the morning

  • Be easily storable when out of town

  • Securely protect the watches from the elements (and cats)

  • Have a level of quality reflective of the watches it holds

I always find it amusing when I see six figure collections in a $20 box. To each their own in that regard, but for me if I am spending X on a collection, I can afford to spend about 5% of the box’s content on storage. There are plenty of affordable custom or off the shelf solutions that cost less than the price of a MoonSwatch.

I've got a couple of boxes, one was a gift, neither expensive, but contain well over £10k of watches. Why waste money on a flashy box when a cheaper one will do the job just as well & won't detract from the watchfund. Just my 2p worth 🤣

WTF you know according to the laws of physics you could equally keep your most loved timepiece safely contained for international travel with simply a sheet of discarded bubblewrap & an empty Pringles tube ( or similar ) tube. There you go.....next !!

Too blingy and it starts raising unnecessary attention from the Mrs!

@Thrawn I have all of my watches in different storage boxes. For $15 USD it is worth it. I have some portable ones when I am traveling. For me, it is good to keep pieces in them for protection and with a few of them, they are in different categories. For example, a aluminum case that holds 33 and has a combination lock. That holds Swiss automatic movement pieces. Another one that olds four pieces and those are where my Hanharts are kept. An Invicta large yellow waterproof case that has three layers that holds 50 and those are for my Seiko and Miyota movement watches. There are at lease five other boxes and I know what type of watches are in all of them. They may not be essential but most collectors have them for easy access and storage for the watches to be in tact.

I'm on team "cheapest one that looks ok."I spent 20 bucks. There is no functional difference and the aestheic difference is minimal at best in my opinion.

Does the job.

I have seven watches plus one that I intend on selling. I don't have a watch box, but I'm planning on asking a friend of mine's dad, who does woodwork as a hobby, to make me one in exchange for a pack of cigarettes and a pie.

·

I use a travel watch roll to remind me that I must stick to the three watch collection rule. And all the extra ones that don't fit I put in a drawer. As long as I don't buy a big 12-watch boxe I can continue lying to myself. 😂

·

I use a cheap case as well. Works for me.

I bought one of the imitation leather ones about 3 years back but it only held 8 watches, the material started separating and I got real annoyed so being on the handy side I decided to build my own. Needless to say it ain't perfect but, it's fantastic. I still keep my more expensive pieces in the safe but this is what I have for now. Might have to build another one soon tho (more watches that watch slots 😬)

Neat collection!

I buy Amazon watch boxes.

They work just fine. Rather spend the money on my watches and custom straps.

Here's some of my watches in these boxes.

Enjoy the watch!

Cheers!

A trope of bad action movies is that the big expert dude has his gun(s) in some ridiculous fetishistic custom backlit, soft-opening, wall unit. It always makes me laugh. I feel pretty much the same about watch winders, cases, etc.

I have some cheap vinyl hanging pouch thing solely because the dang watches were taking up too much space on the ironing board.

I have the Harbor Freight $11 version. It's overkill, but I do believe I used it once to carry three watches (to the watchmaker) once.

I believe the online fountain pen nerds, who had acquisition disorders that prevented them from sticking all their pens in an old coffee mug or glass flower frog, used to coo over the HF 8 Drawer Wood Tool Chest for being a presentable wood box with felt-lined drawers for $90. Sure enough, some reviewer has already posted images of the thing filled with straps.

LOL , I have 2 of these with a bottom section with bigger drawers, and wheels, they were from Gerstner and are a LOT more expensive, but great for this hobby

·

I have a nice, chunky 3-slot wood box I bought when I was just starting out, and I do think it was a good idea. Helps me to stay organised and also limit myself in the number of watches I own (provided I don't buy another box). I like the heft and smell of the wood, as well as the nice glass window. So to answer your question, definitely not a necessity at all, but keeps me happy, keeps my desk neat, and keeps my spending in check (somewhat).

I noticed a lot of comments talking about "protecting" the watch...

People know that wearing a watch even once every couple of months is far harder on it than sitting on a dresser right? Right?

The only "protection" a watch needs is protection from getting knocked off a desk/dresser/table, and from bumping into other watches/hard objects.

That is the protection I need for my watches. My cats are jerks and will knock them off without cause. They give no Fs.

That's fair, my last girlfriend's cats were the same... My watches lived in cases in a drawer when they were around.

·

I have some S$35 12 watch boxes that I also got online. They are cheap wood, with a glass top and semi-decent pillows but serve my purpose absolutely fine.

·

I just spent 80 USD on one, mainly because 2 of my watches weren't being protected and displayed so I needed a bigger one to have them all together, the other reason was because i wanted my watches to be in a nice place when I'm not using them. They take care of me so I take care of them.

·

Doesn't really mater. Its nice to have a good watch box to store them in but it is just icing on the cake. Most of my watch boxes are in drawers and not visible anyway. Or buried in the closet. I have so many watch boxes its rediculous.

I think it’s important to have a box that can functionally and safely store your watches and accessories, so I’m a big proponent of at the very least upgrading to a drawer for tools and straps. But I also think it’s nice to splurge a little and get something that’s proportional to the quality of your collection. It kind of feels like parking an audi in the carport of a single wide trailer, but I also totally get why people wouldn’t want to invest in one.

I really lucked out and got this one off of an estate seller on eBay in beautiful condition. Couldn’t imagine having a nicer box, although I do wish it was a 6-8 slot so I didn’t have to populate it with my kids’ and wife’s pieces to avoid the compulsion to buy more pieces to fill it 😅💸💸💸

I love nice wooden objects and matched the wood on my dresser…so I got one. It’s probably worth as much as my whole collection combined but I love the way it looks in mt bedroom.

·

I was clear that I wanted not just a showcase box to hold the watches but something that could also wind the automatic pieces even when they are not my wrist for days. Found various options online. They were a bit pricy but I am satisfied with my buy. Adding link for your reference.

I’m building a box but that is also just a woodworking project. Also hasn’t made progress in ~6 months.

Looks great! Was that from Etsy? I think I almost bought this exact box before stumbling on the used N&N on eBay.

Dream watch. I'm not the guy who buys a bunch of $10k watches. My usual price range is around 1-2k. But I've wanted a jlc for forever. Some folks are rolex fanboys, I'm a jlc fanboy.

Oh I gotcha. That’s cool that you have your grail watch. I’ve seen a lot that I like but I haven’t considered any of them to be my grail watch yet. I honestly don’t think I could see myself paying more than $500 for a watch anyway. I like budget watches and so does my wallet😂

You're smarter than me... haha

If you need "a dedicated climate-controlled cabinet" to store things that were designed to be worn outdoors in harsh conditions, then you are wasting your money on either the cabinet or the watches.

You cannot have it both ways. Some folks will brag about 300 meters of water resistance, and then will say they need a climate controlled environment to store them in. These aren't cigars that can dry out, or fine wine that could be spoiled by light or heat. These are objects designed and built to be out in the elements.

If this really concerns you, then just get a G-Shock and have peace of mind. Those things are hard to destroy.

·

I suppose it just depends on whether you consider your wristwatch a useful object or a fine work of art. If you belong to the former group, then you will use it as it was intended to be used. If you belong to the later group you will cherish it and try to preserve it forever under optimum conditions. Climate controlled!

It just doesn't make sense to buy a dive watch and refuse to let it get near any atmospheric moisture. You have wasted your money buying a feature that you don't trust.

I am not suggesting you should abuse your watches. But subjecting them to normal atmosphere isn't abuse. If you feel better about keeping them in a climate controlled case, then that is fine. After all, it is your watch and your money. It is perfectly okay to have this obsession. But it isn't common and it isn't normally necessary. It is just your preference, and isn't that what the hobby is all about?
