Sales Gimmicks

What sales tactics have suckered you in? Which tactics trigger your gag reflex?

Examples; Rolex infinite waiting list, Seiko every thing is limited edition, Invicta decade long 98% off sale.

Not too long ago Jody of JOMW brought up a new micro brand debut with 100 year warranty. Seriously.

100 years warranty is probably similar to Volvo's life time warranty. You have to get it serviced regularly and pay for any parts. After 10 years you've paid for the thing 10x over had 3 new cases and 4 new movements.

I don’t know the specifics, but at least Volvo had a reputation already.

I completely forgot about the extra unrelated item. That one gets me at the grocery store. It’ll be like buy 3 gallons of milk and get a free package of Oreos.

·

‘If you’re buying today then I can speak to the manager and try get a discount…’

But that same discount is available for me tomorrow should I return ?

·

Value for money without inflated claims or "salesspeak".

That makes me think of the shady looking mom and pop diner. There’s usually one in every community, looks like the kind of place to get stabbed. Yet every Friday night you can’t get a table , it’s packed out.

I hate any deal where there's something extra free which you can only get with the purchase of a certain item which you don't want, and then you can't buy the free thing separately.

For instance, Taylor Swift brought out a CD album with a "free" cat watch in a limited edition. I wanted the watch but not her album (bleeurgh!), but you can't have the good thing without buying the crappy thing, and nobody sane wants to pay £30 for a £5 watch accompanied by a load of rubbish which has no value outside of being in a complete limited edition package. If you want the album on its own, you can get it cheaper as MP3s, but no watch with it. Or you can buy the CD for about £15 with no watch. I have no idea why you'd want either, mind you. But anyway, it annoys me.

We’re the watch sharks passing them off on eBay for $1,000?

Suckered by: Invicta's pricing shenanigans

Triggered by: X% better than the leading brand.

·

Never been suckered in by any watch sale tactics, but Rolex anything generally invokes (is that the right word?) my gag reflex.

·

I will say on YouTube it’s the “ I bought this watch so you don’t have to “ …I get it your rich.

·

I got suckered by a couple of Mumbai Specials from Etsy, posing as genuine ORIS. That was early in my collecting.

Man, just Shake it Off.

Phrases such as:

  • Affordable luxury

  • Eliminating the middle man

  • Disrupting or revolutionizing the industry

For a great parody, look up the Spaghetti Scameti videos by Ben's Watch Club on YouTube. Hilarious!

I'm the same! Their watches are fine, iconic even, but the hype train makes me sick!

My ex-wife came home with 12 cans of dog food.

"It was on special offer" she said, "Great" I said. "Now we just need to buy a dog to eat the damned stuff!"

I've heard it's good stuff pass it off as steak in our super markets 🤣

In terms of inner side AR coating, I do wonder if essentially coating the whole thing with an alcoholic marker pen might work, or thinned ink from one, or even thinned translucent Tamiya acrylics, and might make for interesting colour options.

But, I have yet to really get into actual modding rather than theoretical and some tweaks like my self-lumed bezel.

That’s not a bad idea hmmm only way to really know is testing it out lol!! 😜🍻

Early last year I was on the waitlist for some months (after buying my my SMP300) for an explorer…the AD was very nice and professional and said she was having a hard time getting the explorers because “both men and women wanted them.”

She asked if there was something else I was interested in. I said a no date Sub (which I thought would be harder to get than an Explorer) she said “I have a good feeling about that.” A week or so later I got the sub.

·

Water.....being offered bottled water........I'm easily seduced at an AD. 😔

Been there, done that. My sympathies. Thankfully I got back whatever few dollars I would have otherwise wasted.

Evian or just any bottle water…?

Evian or just any bottle water…?

Just any. I was offered sparkling once.....I walked out with a watch that day.

Sparkling water is on another level, in the right setting you can totally pretend it’s champagne.😂

·

Definitely a sales ploy. I wholeheartedly believe Seiko loves the scalpers. Drives the price up.

When you see it everywhere for $1,000 then $425 feels like you’re stealing it. It is a cool watch though.

·

Champagne!
