What watches live rent free in your mind?

Mind you, I’m not talking about grails, but the more realistic of acquisitions. Or maybe unrealistic, I don’t care. However, they don’t have to be on your radar or in the lineup, they just are there in the back of your mind, constantly:

Image

I can’t shake certain watches out of my mind. I browse along, come across a certain specimen, pause, do the double take, and then have the head long debate of why I’m liking it. Am I really that much in love with the piece, or is it just fleeting googly eyes? Are there any details about it that I just can’t live with? I kind of have a checklist, but I haven’t quite sorted it out. Then I come back to the thing days, weeks, months, later, and the watch is still there. Staring at me.

For instance, I keep coming back to this Braun:

Image

I have respect for Bauhaus and being able to pull it off well. Nomos if I had to pick, for me might be some form of Orion or the Tetra, and Junghans has this anthracite dial Max Bill chronograph that sings to me. But this Braun, I tell ya man, it’s hella good to me.

Sure the strap would probably crap out quick, and I think the rest of it is hardly built to last. But this is Bauhaus, just clean function with styling kept at an absolute bare minimum. Just a quartz a dial and three hands. Braun. Sterile otherwise. Love it. But do I? Would it be worn? Would I enjoy it? Will it feel cheap? It’s marked as a ladies watch, which I don’t care, and it’s 38mm (which is hardly small enough to be purely ladies, unisex I could agree with, but anyway) which is a great size. I just betcha the strap won’t be long enough for fat wrists because it’s labeled as a ladies. Anyhow. Next one.

This Islander:

Image

Pretty neat isn’t it? Checks a lot of boxes for me. But I don’t need another Islander diver, I’ve already got two. But not in turquoise wave. And not with that case/bezel/crown combo. Ugh we’re fickle. Just head shakingly, shamefully, materialistic, and superficial. Ah well. I have a blue dialed watch, but obviously, it’s just not the same. This one has stuff and things I likes more than that one in my current possession.

This Elgin:

Image

What a beauty. I know it’s just gonna disappear like another vintage piece I saw on eBay, that’s how it goes. Says it runs, but also says it could use a service, so I know that if I get it, it’ll last all of an hour before crapping out on me.

I’ve never seen a handset like that, and numerals like that. Shows what a noob I am.

And more often than not, I’m reminded of the Ressence Type 3 BBB:

Image

whenever the word grail is thrown around, and how it was one of my early versions of a grail before I decided to stop having grails. Still always brings a smile to my face at how complicated it is to achieve, yet it’s just a basic ETA movement inside. Absolutely preposterous, hilariously dichotomous, looks like a digital pebble, tickles my fancy.

Anyway, these are a couple taken out of the back of my mind.

Seamaster 300 cause look at it…

I also have much love for the Bauhaus. So much so that I have incorporated elements of the Bauhaus style into my home and office. You've seen some of my collection first hand so I think you have a pretty good idea where my head is at style wise.

Mmmm, indeed. My Omegas: the Railmaster in denim, and the CK859.

·

Farer Burbidge. When this watch is available I’m buying it… period.

You definitely like your German watches. And I like your German watches. I’d probably like your home and office too.

Nodus is awesome! 👏

·

3 at the moment. The blue dial Seiko mini turtle, Hamilton Murph 38mm & the Oris Artix GT day date I sold a couple years back for who knows why.

·

I’ve got 2 the Mido Devompression World Timer.

Image

And the Laco Frankfurt GMT.

Image
·

There’s a few.

Longines Silver Arrow. I’m not going to get this one because there’s really no place in my collection for it but it’s awesome in its simplicity.

Image

GO Panomatic Lunar. Any configuration but especially this. I’m currently debating making a big move for this green model from a used watch dealer.

Image
·

The Oris ProPilot X because of a constant back and forth of trying to decide if I actually love or hate the Salmon and Kermit Green used on them. Along with daydreaming of other colors I wish they would use instead

·

For some reason this Jules Jurgensen REALLY captured my attention. Perhaps it's the clean mid-century design but whatever it was I kept going back to check on it for several days and though it was well within my budget I had a lot of other prospects I was chasing and then one day poof it was gone. That was about a year ago and I STILL think about it.

Who needs a moonphase on a diver?

But it’s so charming.

I guess I'm on the Bauhaus train (autobahn?) too. I keep thinking about the Sternglas Naos Quartz.

Form follows function, simple & clean....whats not to love?

Omega speedmaster

Grand seiko snowflake

Black bay 58

All three of these are watches I adore and drool over, yet will probably never own (am always one drunk night away from buying a Bb58 so who knows)

·

Tissot PRX Powermatic ice blue, Seiko SZSB006, Sinn 556 A RS, Doxa Army, Seiko SPB297

These two chronographs are singing their siren song to me right now. Will probably get the Sinn at some point in the near future (<1 year) since it is more that a fair bit affordable given my current circumstances.

·

watches that occupy my thoughts often, are:

Omega speedmaster Moonwatch and omega Seamaster diver 300, white and black ceramic.

Muhle Glashutte SAR Rescue Timer

Farer Aqua Compressor

Laco Dortmund

To name a few 😅

What are the aliens thinking? Exactly.

All we have to do is start charging these watches rent to live in our heads for a few months, and then we could afford to buy them.
