Think most people have a hobby or an interest. Do get some people who say it's expensive, but I can't think of a cheap hobby. Golf, Football, Music, Antiques, Tennis, Fishing. Nope they can all get expensive.

Think you are totally right in your tactic of ignoring them, if you do listen then that will give them some air of authority and that is the last thing you need a watch snob to have. If you treat them as if their opinion doesn't really matter it will hopefully deflate their ego.
