Why do we collect watches?

A journey into watch collecting is highly personal and subjective. While some individuals may find their motivations encompassing a combination of various reasons, others might identify with just a few.

Aesthetics, passion and personal expression

·

Aesthetics, passion and luxury would be my combination.

·

Combo of the 3, but status is the least important.

·

Why do we collect watches?

Because cars can’t fit into a watch box.

·

Aesthetics, design/tech, and history - so mix.

·

Because I have the brain of a magpie and didn’t play sports as a youth

·

I just like watches!

·

Shopping addiction.

·

I can't remember, it's been a long time.

·

Got nothing better to do.

·

Illness of the mind

·

Personal history, they are practical, mechanic/quartz ist cool, the ability to get cool watches at affordable prices.

I Like the history behind brands and watches. However that is not a reason to buy them.

·

Expression is the main reason

·

Mostly about personal expression for me.

·

Because we can.

·

Passion, awe, aesthetics and there’s simply quite something about having 150+ tiny components working together in an orderly fashion in proper sync to show the time.

·

Yes to all except investment and status. I have no expectation that my watches will go up significantly in value. Also, if my watches attracted a significant amount of attention in every day life it would make me very uncomfortable. Being the center of attention isn't for me.

Good topic. This is a wider net for sure. Of your 3, B. To me its simply: FUN. There are worse vices to have, for certain. Im in the car biz so that fetish is over saturated. I used to collect sports cards as a kid so this is a good next safe/easy hobby to fill my time.

Form, function, fashion

·

For me A > B > C. Mostly A & B

·

Addiction, obsession, delusion 🫠

·

A and C combo for me. Aesthetic/design is a huge part of this hobby. I choose a watch of the day depending on what I dress. Case shape, dial color and strap are elements of the total styling. So I say that’s personal expression. Also I can’t deny there is luxury and a bit flex in behind.

·

Cuz chicks dig watches! 🤣

·

I use them as tools, I like sentimental value, I appreciate the art of movements, I like the way they look on my wrist and I'd be lost without one so there we go hahaha

·

Mostly B. While not high end, a lot of the watches I've found are rare to the point of being forgotten so I try to save and restore whatever I can.

·

I feel like it's a combination of being deeply depressed and trying to fix emotional stress with material possessions (American). And trying to become a more mature and responsible version of myself for my children's sake. Plus it bleeds into other obsessions such as film and history. Also acquiring the things for your collection is one thing, but the hunt for whatever it is you collect is the real fun.

I don't collect watches. I own a dozen of timepieces I have chosen and bought because I like them.

Not really a collecting effort
