Seiko Divers

What's your favourite modern Seiko Diver? The Seiko's I wear always seem to surprise the "non-watch people" the most with comments like "oh, that's a Seiko" I guess they only think there's one company who makes a Diver's watch! (Mentioning no names of course). Would love to know your views and experiences?

Cheers

Brad

My favorite modern Seiko divers come from the Prospex LX collection. I've had my SNR045 for about 9 months and it's definitely received attention here and there. It's kinda hard not to notice it when it looks like this:

Image

Even so, when I'm asked about it and I tell them it's a Seiko, I almost always get one of two responses. They're either expecting me to say it's some other brand and are surprised to hear that it's a Seiko or they respond with, "What's a Seiko?"

It's kind of humbling to be reminded of the bubble we watch enthusiasts live in from time to time.

I've had exactly one person recognize it for what it was and he was really excited to see a spring drive in person for the first time. That was a neat experience.

·

Wow, look at that! That's also another great thing about Seiko, you always see something you've never seen before! 😉

·

Asking folks here what they think about anything from Seiko is like asking them if they like oxygen.

Prospex LX snr043 - Ti, DLC, spring drive, 300m, and best lume of any watch in existence. Midnight ocean colorway. Totally safe to wear for any activity as spring drive is way more tough than a regular mechanical movement. Nobody will know it’s a pricey watch either!

I love my seiko Shogun. Titanium, so comfortable, amazing lume, 6R movement, 70 hours, £500.

All the shoguns are Ti, 😃 so you can wield a katana better 🤘

I think always better to go Ti on a larger sized diver !

Bwa Hahahaha 😂😂 👏

You should’ve just let this comment sit for a while longer to let the outrage build

Muhahaha I should have darn it I missed the opportunity 😂😂

Thank you! Yup it’s big, but not quite the way you think.

I’m a hair under a 6.0 inch wrist and Moonlit Ocean isn’t my biggest ‘feeling’ watch. I’ll post some pics so you can see how it wears on my tiny wrist

I notice the height of 14.5mm way more than its size or weight. the occasional tight cuff is held up on it, but I sort of like it poking out since it’s so pretty to look at. 😜

You can see how they use super fine polished ridges at the 12,3,6,9 indices. So it slightly refracts light and occasional reflects a small rainbow of colour.

·

Should’ve mentioned at the start - nice night diver! I like that they embraced to green glow on those

My favorite is the turtle. So big and still great to wear. I just love the cushion case.

·

I like the Prospex line, you get consistant quality.

·

Like many, I'm a big fan of the #turtle:

Image

As my first proper, #diver's (apostrophe ~s) ISO 6425 #divewatch, the Turtle is the bar I measure all other divers by. A bit chonky, but gosh it feels solid.

However, I'm also a #chronograph enthusiast thus, my appreciation for the SSC015:

Image

Probably the best value ISO6425 chronograph available i.e., under AUD$500.⁰⁰ and often around AUD$400.⁰⁰, Multiple colourways: #pepsi, #savetheocean, and other occassional randomness. A little lighter with the #solar movement but still imposing without feeling like you are wearing a brick.

Oh, but I'm totally looking out for the #sumo #gmt to go on sale:

Surprised this thread hasn't garnered more #sumo love.

I often have this very discussion when out and about and wearing a #vostok. You may as well be speaking an alien language to a lot of people who don't know (#blessthebubble) or the minority have strong opinions one way or another.

That said, a friend with no horological inclinations (he stole and wore his daughter's happy meal Moana digital watch for 6 months) recently surprised me by going into depth on #seiko's vertical integration approach i.e., they manufacture every component and manufacture timepieces themselves).

How did he know all of this? "Fell down a wiki hole" apparently 😜!

This is why #vostok appeals to me as much as #seiko. Both are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you are going to get.

My Willard. Tried fading the bezel insert, not too chuffed with the results, but will replace it with something different once I've found something else that fits (ideally want a 12 hour bezel insert as that'd be far more useful for me - see pic)

Image

Also own a MM200 JDM (petrol bezel) that I don't really like much (hate round indices, bit odd I know!), & A spb147 tho my Mrs wears that most of the time.

Next watch will probably be the Slim Turtle.

For me Seiko sweet spot is £650-£1200 as these have the 6r movements and the brilliant diashield coating.

Of the cheaper options I've had a couple Turtles and a Sumo. Loved them all, sold because of the round indices.

My only wish with Seiko divers is for NO DATE!! Hate that pointless complication with a passion.

Mine currently would be the Seiko SPB143. Besides the movement being a little wonky with accuracy and to e bracelet being a little heavy, this Seiko keeps me coming back.
