D) Seiko

It has obviously been a weird start to the year, I bought a Seiko. Do not adjust your set.

@Porthole endures…

This little pretty donkey comes straight from the @GasWorks Donkey Sanctuary, so it has been lovingly restored, and thus we have little to fear regarding reliability or quality. The sanctuary is also not far away, so emergencies are catered for. It is a 1971 5Actus SS. Don’t know the movement ref offhand, I’m not a Seiko guy, and I’m not too bothered.

It’s nice. I’m going to wear it as a daily in the office as I’m quite smitten.

Initial thoughts - the rotor is loud as fuck, like Miyota 8xxx series loud, and it’s relatively weighty; you can feel that thing rolling around in there. My 1960s Sportsmatic feels the same, and that bothers me a lot. Perhaps this might feel better, but I’m not sure why… I like the push in date-change, very swish; reminds me of my garish gold Enicar from the 1970s.

So, if you felt temperature drop a few degrees, this is why.

I’m currently lusting after King Seikos, but I think I might not. I have been offered a King Quartz, but I might pass. I have also been tracking mid-90s quartz Grand Seikos, that might be a way to shut people down on the “ohh your not a watch person if you’re not a Grand Seiko owner” which is both bs, and daft - they are stupid cheap, and probably acceptable as a stealth flex.

@Porthole endures…

You’re near the top of the list. How long before you’re buried?

I’ll try to help. As it happens, I’m wearing my Donkey Sanctuary Seiko tonight as well (also with vanishing crown):

I’ll be buried by the morning 😂

The fact that @Porthole will wear (a) a Seiko, (b) as a daily, (c) not as vintage as he usually does, and (d) SEIKO!? is probably enough internet for today.

Huge respect to @GasWorks as always - incredible work.

‘Tis the night they drove old Porthole down. (And the bells were ringing).

My joke has been given new life in the service of @Porthole 's "watch journey."

@GasWorks is a WC treasure.

It's November 1971.. so positively futuristic for @Porthole

It's official, the apocalypse has begun. I knew this day would come, just didn't expect it this soon. It's a nice watch though, and you bought it from a nice guy, so maybe the reckoning will be a welcome change for the (watch) world!

·

That actus is lovely indeed! I had my eye on it so you inadvertently saved me a few quid probably.

Now you have one it's a slippery slope....there are more varieties of vintage seiko than there are stars in the sky.

I'm wearing a #@GasWorks number today by coincidence and its another SS Actus...

·

Oh my, is this the chink in the armour, its nearly a sweet side, soft, cuddly, soft sofa like for a seiko. But that is one sweet watch that will part the toughest folded plate steel. That dial n colour

It is a looker. I had little intention of buying a Seiko, and then I opened a @GasWorks thread and - bang - an orphaned Actus gets adopted by Scrooge here.

Without sounding too pretentious it has good wrist presence for a modestly sized watch. The case shape definitely called to me. Plus Gareth applied some non original lume which makes it unusual compared to my other older seikos.

Your new piece is a lovely shade of blue. I do love the actus line.

I have two vintage Seikos now.

I have this 1960s Sportsmatic, and have for the last two years. I struggle to enjoy it - the rotor is noisy and heavy, it’s “ok”. I should like it on paper, but I have worn it two times.

This Actus is similar in terms of rotor - I can feel it in there, and it’s not quiet albeit it is quieter than the Sportsmatic. The case reminds me of the baller GasWorks Citizen Eagle 7 I do so adore, and the date change push-in crown complication is most delightful. This is a melting of the heart.

If we want to read more into this - fine. #fuckoffchrisnobodycares is usually full of opinions, and I have seen some posts already deleted (you know who you are)... but fuck it, it’s a birthday party (as I always say)

Those who read my ramblings know I have little time for Seiko. I have dabbled, I have endured, and I have eyes and read around. I find them very uninspiring, and I think there are better watches out there for the money. We all have set rules (even if they are “I have no rules”, like @Ichibunz who is an Octupus with a credit card, or @ChronoGuy who owns around 2 of 90% of all watches locked in a secret Napa Valley vineyard vault. He makes wine from watch collectors tears), but why, and what causes them to break/bend/shatter? It’s all about the journey anyway (@Aurelian is going to hate me right about now).

I do often suggest straying from the resort, and I think that keeps things interesting. I have no desire to add another Rolex or Trinity watch to the pot, so I am in what I call “critical state collecting” - I have gone beyond standard tropes and I am fucking about. It’s a hobby after all. My envelope is there to be pushed (ooh-er). This might be contrived, or insincere, but it is fun.

This is a pretty watch; I’m a sucker for a pretty face. Aren’t we all?

Its gorgeous n good on you for your adoption, oh there's something a little special with those vintage seikos (and 'the man" does a great resto job on them) and if one wants to take it up a notch, a clean white dialled seiko of that era just screams 'taste' (simplicity done so right).

There must be some diy thing that can be done for dampening rotor noise. I had this thought before, but never tried it. Apparently one of the new Timex retro releases has a skeletonized rotor on a Miyota movement which helps? I don't have this problem though, rotor noise is unnoticed by me.

As you know I've doubled down on Seiko on my end. But I like to keep things less predictable with my builds. I think if I ever reach the same point as you and go full divergent that's what I would do. Just build and flip. Although to be honest I'm not having luck flipping my piece uniques lol.

It’s weird. I’m wearing a fucking Seiko, and tracking 90s quartz Grand Seikos - what the fuck has happened?

Welcome to another branch of the hydra (or in simple terms another tunnel in the huge rabbit Warren of the collecting pool) I'm feeling it it atm, for gods sake I've got into chrono's, dangerous shit to be sure, even the Chinese stuff is 40 quid n upwards💸💸💸💸💸 and 'economically inactive' Jeez 6 in months be living under a bridge wearing a big coat and chasing pigeons😄

I get the feeling the rotor weight and noise is part of the charm? The difference between the Sportsmatic and the Actus is very noticeable, as too is the feeling that the rotor imparts when it engages. This makes me sound like I’m new to automatics, but it is similar to a Miyota 8xxx series. By comparison, I have ETAs from the 1960s, and a Felsa Bydinator from 1940s, and those are quiet as anything.

I think Seiko is one of those mountains I was unlikely to scale, and on the whole they do not “speak to me” (sorry @Aurelian - so sorry…). But then again… you will always find something that appeals… mine just happens to be a baby blue Actus that’s had a bath.

To be fair I have almost no experience with true vintage. Anything I own older than 1980 is a manual wind.

Enjoy those Seikos!

As for the rotor noise - Think of it in terms of haptics. If you can hear it, you know it's doing something. Like the reassuring "beep" of a barcode scanner. 😁😁

It’s very noticeable - it’s borderline Miyota 8xxx series: Warp 8 Mr Miyota. I guess you don’t really notice it on NH3x series, and ETAs of certain calibres. It is not a massive complaint, it’s quite weighty, and you can hear the “clicking” as it engages, so yes, it is comforting.

I suppose when you rock thin, hand wound classic movements as a daily you just get spoiled by the lack of rotor.

I understand that this is just a Seiko thing - it’s fine. It’s putting following up on vintage King and Grand Seikos into perspective - it’s probably not for me despite the visual appeal. Baby Blue here will effectively fill the Seiko category, unless you come rescue another pretty little donkey…
