Check out my latest project: A quick teaser of my GMT watch! Tell me your thoughts!

Hi Watchcrunchers, here’s my project!

An automatic GMT watch, shaped with one idea in mind “ Try to be different staying classic”.

Long story short, I have always loved the idea of creating a watch from scratch. So, I started designing it almost a year ago, and little by little it has been taking shape.

I am excited to share with you this concept teaser and thrilled to hear your opinions. Feedback is incredibly important at this stage of the design process!

What I’ve done:

  • Sketches

  • More sketches

  • Mistakes

  • Research (design an technical)

  • Four different 3D printed prototype

Next steps:

  • Waiting for my first stainless steel case prototype!

  • Finalizing the overall design (hands, dial, backcase..)

...and a lot of other things 🤣

After all, I am planning to end everything by September.

Overall, I think you have a great looking concept, and the dimensions are spot on. If I could make a couple of additions, I would lume the bezel numbers, and include a stainless steel bracelet as standard, but give people the option of leather and rubber straps as add ons. I look forward to seeing your prototype!

perhaps a more prominent gmt hand

like the shape

·

Great project 👏 Would love to see more of your process (previous sketches, 3D prints, etc...) if you feel confortable sharing it ofc!

·

As everyone has said, the overall shape is super interesting. I’m more attracted to pieces that are “different” and this one looks really good.

·

Really loving the alternative case shape 👌

Really interested to see what colour ways you go with.

Hi Stroud_Green!

I find the idea of lume the bezel numbers definitely worth considering. While the inclusion of a steel bracelet may be more challenging to incorporate into the design, but it is something that I have already been contemplating. Thank you for your input!

Yes, I'm still working on it because I'm not completely satisfied. I will definitely make it more visible. Thanks!

If other users are interested in the project and would like to follow along with the process, I would be more than happy to share my work!

Interesing, I like it.

Have you tried a prototype pulling a bit of a Nautilus by balancing the crownguards with a non-functional bump on the left of the case? Wouldn't even have to be in the same protruding dimensions (width-wise), maybe a third or so, or even an "inverse" golden ratio of ~0.6 of the right guards.

·

Interesting shape.

I'm not 100% sure about the 24Hr markers that are barely noticeable in your sketches.

·

Don't take this the wrong way. I generally don't like square or rectangular watch cases (I don't actually dislike them, just don't actively like), and I much prefer steel/silver colored cases, you have made one damn nice looking watch. Congratulations.

·

Love the case shape.

·

Overall I like the way the design is headed but I am not sold on the hands, the GMT in particular. I think it might be tough to read quickly.

·

I think it really is going the right direction I like it overall as well. As others pointed out, a bit more prominent GMT hand would be preferred, although I know that would be tough to do considering the shape of the watch

Actually, on my initial sketches, I did incorporate the bump on the left side as per your explanation. However, the design was way to similar to the Nautilus and so I decided not to include it, preferring a continuous surface.

Looks great! Reminds me a little of my Maen Manhattan - but sportier. The only thing I would change (except for adding a bracelet, of course...) would be the size of the dial side logo. -20% would do. 👍

·

Looks great, I don't really care for GMT watches but this is a really refreshing take on them. Would be interested to see a side profile! Giving the case an overall curve so it conforms to the wrist would make it incredibly wearable, similar to the Frank Muller Curvex:

That’s a very nice and interesting case shape! Do you think of doing different colourways? Types of strap? Looks really promising!

Thank you!

The prototype will be with rubber or leather strap. The dial will be a dark lacquered color, I have yet to figure out which one!

Thank you Pickle247 !

If you and other users are interested, I will certainly post some more details. Thanks for the advice on the case, I will definitely take it into consideration!

I will be following this thread and hopefully the watch, please let us know if info moves to a new thread or website.

Love the design! And the sw330 is quickly becoming fav movement.

But how would a non rotating bezel work? And I find the black numbers hard to read. That's a killer on a GMT watch, where the dial is busy and you need high legibility.

Thank you Konsalik!

Do you mean to reduce the size of the brand font?

So far it looks promising. It's be interested in seeing a side profile shot. I'm curious how flat or curved downward the lugs are. Also as already stated the hands need a bit more work.

Thanks, I will post more as I progress with the prototype if you are interested!

Thanks!

The "local" hour and minute hands work with 12-hour time, while the GMT hand is independently adjustable to set any time zone to 24 hours and reads on the bezel. Since the bezel is not rotatable, it will not be possible to have a third time zone.

As for the legibility of the GMT numbers, the entire case is stainless steel while the GMT engraved numbers will be inked in black or with Super-LumiNova, ensuring high visual contrast!

·

interesting design for sure. Curious to see it "in the flesh".

The rubber strap should be fitted to the case to give it a nice "luxury sports watch" vibe (it looks like it is, but can't really tell from the dark preview image).

I will definitely post something more detailed in the future!

I confirm that, as you say, the rubber strap will be shaped to fit the case.

Yes, exactly.

Pretty dope! 👌🏼

·

Yep, really interested in this. My only reservation is that I tend to prefer brighter colours than black. But the SW300 is a hit, and the case shape is different to anything I own. Have you got any idea of pricepoint yet?

thank you! Still no pricepoint. There is still a lot of work to be done and it would be very difficult to give a correct estimate!
