Is it safe to wear a Rolex in the USA?

Hi I’m traveling from Taiwan next month to USA, (new york city).  And was wondering is it safe to wear a Rolex here?  i hear crime and mugging is really bad in USA.

I don't want to say no but, I don't really want to say yes. Location, surroundings, spacial awareness, don't be a tourist, don't flash the bling when you're eating a slice, and last but not least stay away from the QuarterSlot Movies, it'll never come off your shoes!!

·

I wouldn't

I live in Chicago, I see Rolex watches more than you think, on locals and tourists. If you're really worried bring your "beater" and that way you'll enjoy your trip more. For what it's worth, the I can count the times strangers have even noticed my watch on one hand, one of them was a watch shop proprietor.

I think @MinnKonaMike nailed it. If you’re not very familiar with the lay of the land, then don’t ask for trouble. I visit NYC regularly and am comfortable moving about, but I don’t live there, and wouldn’t wear a visible Rolex there. .

·

As long as you don't set foot on public property, I think you'd be fine.

·

I travel in Asia most of the time and I can wear it anywhere and not have any issues.  But in USA it’s much more dangerous so I think you guys are right I probably should not wear it.  Thanks!

·

It really depends on where you go. They are more likely to target you as a tourist than target you for your watch.

I don’t understand when you say depends where you go?  i am going to New York City.  in Asia there are no dangerous areas or cities.

·

There are very safe and less-safe areas of any city here in the states.

If you're giving it more than 1 minute of thought, I'd leave it at home.  No sense worrying about it and detracting from your enjoyment of the trip.

I missed that you were going to NYC. Crime is up there, but there are certainly places I felt totally safe prepandemic.

Good sir, DO NOT WEAR YOUR ROLEX TO NYC!!!  Homicides, "quality of life" crimes and nuisances, and general lawlessness are skyrocketing in the U.S.

@OscarKlosoff nailed it.

I wear my GS'es all the time, and anywhere I want here in San Diego.  But, that's because nobody knows what the hell a GS is, and I also never leave the house!

I did have to, unfortunately, travel up to the Bay Area this past week for work.  Went to a really nice craft ramen restaurant in Santa Clara - average price of a home is ~$1.53M.  As my co-workers and I were walking toward the restaurant, which is located in a well-lit strip mall, we heard a crunching sound.  My co-worker yelled, "Hey!" and I looked up to see a kind gentleman shattering the passenger side window of a car, reaching in, and yanking a laptop bag out of the seat.  As soon as the gentleman heard my co-worker yell, he immediately sprinted toward his getaway car.  He hopped in, and the driver put the pedal to the floor.  My co-worker and I started running after them, and I tried to read the license plate number as the car was pulling away, but failed to memorize it, and was also not clear-headed enough to think to pull out my phone and take a photo.  They got away.

I was pissed at myself for not having had the foresight to pull out my phone, but my co-worker rightfully pointed out to me, "Come on, dude, even if you'd gotten the license plate number, the cops wouldn't have done sh*t."  That's exactly right.

Welcome to America!

First, it depends on the Rolex & what your going to be doing here. If your on business & gonna be mostly in mid-town, its probably ok with a few caveats:

1-its cold. your gonna be bundled up and it'll probably be under your cuff

2-if its a Daytona, I wouldnt. If its a stainless sports or 2-tone DJ/OP, its probably ok but Dont be flashy, dont act like a tourist & be aware of where you are & use common sense.

3- if its on your mind and your gonna be self-concious about it - leave it at home.

4- if you wanna flex, go down to canal st and buy a fake & wear that.

I wear my GMT 1675 a good amount of time and truthfully nobody looks at it that im aware of. 5 & 6-digit sports models get the most attention but nobody even notices my tudor BB blue when I wear it.

If your wearing that then I assume your not gonna be walking the streets or taking the subway much. In which case you would be fine. 😜

And it makes a difference what transportation you are taking.  If I am heading to the Chicago Theater on the Red line (from the south loop) I probably will wear a different watch than if I was taking an Uber.

Wish we could say yes, but with that, it’s a no, unless you are mostly in private spaces.

·

It all depends on how you roll!

For the most part nobody's going to give a second thought about what your wearing.

However, If your doing Wrist shots in Times Square.. Whoop Whoop!. Then yes you're going to get targeted.

·

Not sure about New York, but I wear mine whenever I feel like it.

·

99% of the US is safe because nobody is going to take a second look at your watch.  It's really only in the places where the rich should rightfully be dined upon that you would have to worry, and only if you look like an easy mark (outside of California and New York, but I refer to the former).

I gotta stop wearing watches with precise stop watch functions when I take the cta, it's been a bit infuriating seeing all that time add up while waiting for a bus that should've been there 15 minutes ago.

When I was planning my trip to NYC one of my planned souvenirs was a canal st Rolex 😂

Welcome to America!

Craft Ramen restaurant!  That's what I want to hear more about!  😃 Our downstairs tenant a few years ago was the manager of Danbo, a Kyushu ramen company that now has 2 Vancouver locations.  Always was a total score to walk in and get royal treatment at one of the most popular ramen places in town.

I have only a weak concept for the safety in the States, but personally would keep a Rolex on the DL if I was going there (and if I owned a Rolex, nope!)

We've got the same issues with property crimes like car window smashing in Van BC.  Many of my friends with nice cars now leave car doors permanently unlocked to prevent the issue of window smashing, since it's so common.  Money for drugs is always the motive.  Almost all the drug addicts from across Canada congregate in Vancouver for it's good supply and slightly better weather.  The only upside we enjoy is that the violence is almost never targeted other humans, only property.

I had this worry too and I’m American. But I’ve been to NYC and seen others do it. Wear it under long sleeves and you’ll be fine.
