Hey good-looking, what's your number?

Okay, what number are you at?

  1.  How many watches do you have in your collection now?
  2.  How much is too much?
  3.  How many before your spouse divorces you?

I started out at 2.  Then I got a watch winder, and since it had 4 slots, I had to fill all 4.  I finally reached 10, and decided that that would be the utmost limit.

Well, GS Boutique dude texted me and said, "Yo, interested in the SBGJ255?"

I mean, it's the classic 44GS case, Titanium, and limited to 1,200 pieces...  I ain't gonna tell my wife.  Though, she'll probably notice the new watch winder in the bedroom...

“I aint gonna tell my wife,” they always find out buddy. 🤣

I stopped counting at 40. Still married luckily and she’s showing signs of liking the hobby as well. Also never enough watches. 🍻

Its a slippery slope my friend.  I currently have 8 and I already know what my next two watches will be, hope to pick them up this year.  My watch box has 12 slots, fingers crossed I can stay at 12 or under.  😕

·

I'm up to 14 mechanical watches and 8 digital. Not too bad, except I just got into watches about 3 months ago. My wife doesn't care about watches and doesn't notice what I'm wearing anyway. 👍

That GS is awesome by the way.

Every time I buy a luxury watch I say this is the last of my collection! and then I buy another lol.  Picked up 2 grails recently so I’m sitting at 8.  Been able to talk myself out of a lot of watches but 2 i just can’t shake so I’m hoping after those 2 I’ll be done.  I’d love to have more but I’m already having trouble trying to rotate the ones I have!

·

Also like in your case with limited quantities you wonder if you’ll ever run into that watch again

  1. I don't think I'm a watch collector, I just have fun with watches. I find them interesting, how they mimic earth's rotation, and symbolize the ephemeral thing that is time. They are also part of my outfit. The delicate nature of wristwatches is also intriguing to me.
  2. When you feel that a watch becomes a burden, for whatever reason.
  3. As long as I likewise support her hobbies, there is really no problem. Watches are easy in that regard, they don't clutter up the house. 😉

im in the same boat, currently at 10 pieces.. but the wife has changed her tune a little bit since i bought her a Rolex OP and a blinged out DateJust.

I have 6 core pieces, 2 G-shocks, plus a sentimental piece that never gets worn. Honestly my collection is probably larger than I would like, but I also love every piece so much that I can’t imagine selling any of them. My dad passed his method of having your spouse accept your hobby. Instead of hiding my purchases from her, I obsess about them, constantly show her pictures, and eventually she will say “just buy the damn thing”. But in all seriousness we have a set amount of money each going into our separate “fun money” accounts and we both spend them how ever we want. She has been very supportive of my watch collecting

I don't sell watches gifted to me, so that's three.

Have three Orient divers set aside for my grandkids. Wore a new one when they were born and first time I held each of them. Let them play with the watches as infants and, literally, cut their teeth on them. Will gift to them when they turn 16. Not expensive but sentimental.

Currently have a single beater Casio digital for yard/shop work.

Have seven with one on the way that are to be given to my kids, their spouses and grandkids when I take the big dirt nap. Have two more to buy for that collection and will have those done by 2023. These are mid level luxury. Quality well made autos, all Swiss, that they will be able to wear and pass to their kids. Chose these because I love them and tried to focus on what I thought each of them would like in a watch as well.

Then it is on to a 5-6 watch collection that will be for me. Watches that, at least for me, were too expensive to buy while I had other obligations. Prices all range from $4-8K each. Hoping I can see that through.

  1. My current count is 13.
  2. Great question and one that I've battled with for quite a long time. There is my logical self who recognizes that there are only 3-4 watches in my rotation consistently and that it makes sense to finally reduce the hoard. Then there is the weird collector side of me who just enjoys trinkets for the sake of being trinkets, and wants to hold onto them. Whenever my logical self breaks through, I head over to my case and start my monthly winding session... and by the end, I rediscover why I love each piece, whether its a design aspect or it sparks some memory recall.
  3. She talks me out of purchasing several watches but has also willingly contributed to the hoard. I think the unspoken agreement is so long as I don't sell the car to fund a watch purchase we can remain happily married, haha.

I'm currently pushing over 40 watches and also have lots of parts.....

·

Currently have 7* in the collection, all of which cost less than $1,000. As for what’s “too much,” I don’t know that I could ever bring myself to spend more than $1,500 on a watch, but I do see the allure of brands that cost a lot more. I’d love to have a GS one day - I just can’t justify the cost.

I have no idea if I will ever reach an amount that’s “enough,” but if my book and record collections are any indicator, that seems highly unlikely. 😂

I‘m living that bachelor life, so thankfully I don’t have to answer to anyone when it comes to how I spend my money.

*8 if you count my Apple Watch, but I only wear that for the gym/biking/hiking.

  1.  I officially say 15 (but that's just what I still have in circulation).
  2.  When you completely forgot you owned the watch and haven't worn the watch for more than say.... 6 months?
  3.  Ask for forgiveness, not for permission 😂
·
  1. Had 18, but during COVID, got it down to 5. I like it there.
  2.  I like it at 5, and am gonna try and keep it there.
  3. My wife only sees the number of watches. Doesn't really see the price/watch, which is steadily going up. Just like @bevelwerks , she's part of the problem! Saw a blue dial 126200 Rolex Datejust on YouTube yesterday and said "you should get one of those".
·

I own a boatload of watches as a result of years of collecting. The oldest goes back 45 years,  and many are at least 20 years old. I manage to wear and maintain them all ,allbeit sporadically for many. There is no too much. I do try to pare down on occasion but then I see something I like and it's off to the races again. Some just aren't worth selling. Nobody wants a 20 year old Luminox with failing lume or a Mondaine that's been worn a lot and shows it.

My wife couln't care less. She knows it's my hobby , I enjoy it, and it keeps me out of her hair.

I have owned "high end" stuff in the past but would never (and never should have) pay over a grand for a watch.

I'm as happy wearing a Casio Duro as I was wearing a Chopard Mille Miglia 2001 model ( Long since sold)

Time is money, so I only have 8 right now .. but only time will tell how many I will end up with.

·

10

I’m uncomfortable at anything more, then I get some sort of epiphany moment and decide I will reduce to two, one for everyday and one for best, then I sell, then I regret some, I get to probably four, then the madness comes back and I’m back to 10, and round and round it goes…….

Too funny.  I want to get my collection down.  I have too many now.  However, every time I think about selling any of my watches, I begin to hyperventilate and sweat and shake...  though, that might just be the DTs.  Not sure if it has to do with watches or withdrawal.

I was at 9. I was happy. 2 Omegas. 2 GSes. A Tissot here, a Bulova there, and a Doxa somewhere. A Seagull because it seemed cool. And an old Kenneth Cole watch because it was my first watch ever.

Then someone turned me on to the whole modding Casio GA-2100s. I bought one to fill out the watch box that carries 10 watches. Since then I bought 2 more Casioaks and corresponding mod kits. I need to be stopped.

If they don’t fit in your watch box, you have too many, and I have two too many.

If I were to go out and buy a Glashutte Original tomorrow , she may be very upset. If I work her for a year or so, she’ll come around. 😁
