I’m A Collector Now?

While I don’t necessarily agree with the statement, Kevin O’Leary has claimed on numerous occasions that you’re not a true collector of a make until you own 3 pieces by them.

Over the winter I found myself, by Mr. Wonderful’s definition, to be a collector of both Fossil and Casio watches. But now I’m happy to say I’m an Omega collector 😜

What makes are you, by this definition, a collector of?

Seiko, Grand Seiko, Nodus, Halios and Casio. I’m too lazy to list them in alphabetical order.

Very nice! Seiko will likely be my next brand for gaining collector status by this metric… or Hamilton

·

Not that I agree but, Elgin, Gruen, Bulova, Waltham, West End, and Hamilton.

Yeah I don’t necessarily agree either, there are collectors with only one watch. But it’s interesting to see what brands people have 3 or more of

Casio, Grand Seiko, Seiko, and Steinhart. One more and I'll be eligible for the Omega collectors badge, but not really interested in getting that one at the moment.

Plus - not brand specific, but - watch boxes, spring bar removal tools, and watch straps. Lots of watch straps. In fact, you could say I'm primarily a collector of watch straps! 😜

I do love a good watch strap, and have been accumulating quite a few lately

O'Leary is a bit of a blowhard with a lot of stuff he says, but his reasoning is sound in this area. To have a collection of any brand, you'd need at least two. And as you can sometimes arrive at two by happy accident, rather than trying to collect that brand, I think three is a safer number to say that a brand collection starts at. I think it makes sense, to be fair.

·

Nice Seamaster GMT! 🔥🔥🔥

·

I guess Seiko, if you count wifeeee’d then Rolex too, but I guess I have a pretty diverse collection, oh and Swatch & Casio/GShock

Yours look good in straps btw, great GMT and that Deville is “just a great watch”.

·

Not that I agree with Kevin on this, but I’ll play - Skagen, Citizen (EcoDrives), Grand Seiko, Omega, Rado, Oris, Vario.

·

Casio collection per O'Leary rules. Lowest bar of entry.

·

Omega! I admire your choice! I have loved Omega since the 1960s. Yes, I was a kid back then. Your collection is superb. I enjoy each piece for itself.

👌

·

To my surprise, apparently I collect:

Illuminating question!

·

Between my wife and me, it’s Rolex and Nomos. I think Grand Seiko is next in line for this honour 😏

·

Since we're listing down watches we "collect": Omega (6 pieces) and Longines (4 pieces). I used to "collect" JLC but apparently letting one go renders that a non-collection.

I only have one quesrion, how come I have three full watch boxes of 24-, 10- and 3-slots?

Omega, Tudor and Seiko. I used to also have 3 Oris 3 Breitling and 3 Rolex but, sold some. I’ve actually been going in the opposite direction and trying to have only one of each of my fave brands in the watch box.

I think I’m gravitating towards one or two of each brand as well… except for Omega. I don’t care how many of them I acquire, they’re fantastic

·

I’m apparently more a collector by movement: 5 Seiko, 4 Citizen/Miyota, 1 Casio and the rest are all ETA, one way or another.

That’s one way to do it!

·
ZMaster

you are but if it's only 1 brand then kinda?...

I suppose

·
Berare777

If you have more than one watch you are a collector, does not matter if it is a Omega or Fossil.

I don’t disagree… though in rare cases I have seen collectors with only one watch.

Taking over someone else’s thinking on how I should label myself… naaa… but I see myself as an enthusiast who likes to wear his watches where possible. But in the three or more ballpark I have accumulated multiple Seikos.

Started off as a buzzkill, but then you finished by playing the game… as I said in my post, I don’t necessarily agree with or label myself according to Mr. O’Leary’s definition. The post is for fun and to spark discussion.

I guess by that metric, then I’m a collector of Swatch, Seiko, Orient, VE… 😂

Thank you for playing the game 🙏🏻

And what’s VE?

I love those tuning forks!

Those are so cool! AnalogShift had an event in NYC last year to celebrate the tuning fork movement. I didn’t find out until the day before and was bummed I had to miss it.

I’ve got a vintage Bulova Railroad Approved with a tuning fork and there’s also a tuning fork movement in my maroon dialed Omega.

I should add that my dad also has an all gold Bulova Accutron that he’s had since the ‘70s or ‘80s that he loves.

Very nice! I have yet to go for a Tudor. I had my eye on one before my wife spent our extra funds on an old BMW 🤣

I get it. I've spent my funds on old BMWs in the past and probably in the future. I have too many expensive hobbies.

You can say that again. Life would be simpler if I could choose just one hobby… and if that hobby was cheap - like running or something 😂

And what’s VE?

Vostok Europe from Vilnius, Lithuania. Not to be confused with Vostok in Chistopol, Russia, although they used to partner supplying VE with movements

Oh neat! Thanks for clarifying
