What's gonna happen to the Milgauss?

There's a lot of hate for Rolex these days. But it's hard to hate the Milgauss. Truth is, I never understood this watch until I tried one on my wrist, and it's just cool... a watch that's mastered the art of not giving a Fck.

Should they update it? Leave it? Or drop it? We'll find out next week.

It was a great clip again. And I agree. The Milgauss is also my favorite

But I think Casio uses also a green collered sapphire in their Oceanus OCW-T200S-3AJF.

·

It's a cool watch, one of the few watches from Rolex I could see buying. It even inspired my questionable build.

Without the lightning second hand its just a no-date. The anti-magnetic thing was solved long ago.

·

Love the video.

Rolex, for me anyway, has been played out to its final conclusion. Like many I got my first Rollie in the early 1990's as the sign that I made it. Then of course they started multplying until I was pretty much done with them in the late 2000's.

I will say that I didnt lose one red cent on any of them, instead making a modest gain. I think the fact they hold value is as much a draw as the fact they are as staus symbol. And of course, they well made timepieces that don't go out of style.

A watchmaker I used in New York for many years, a very ancient Asian man, working on one of my many Breitlings at the time, always used to say-

"Buy Rolex, you no loose your money."

·

Great video, always been tempted by the thought of owning a Milgauss.

·

The Milgauss definitely holds a special place in the Rolex collection. It's the model for not just watch nerds, but also tech nerds.

I can say I actually bought a Ball Marvelight with the rainbow dial because it reminded me of this mindset. A high spec elegant watch that's different to the rest and not afraid to show it.

·

I say keep it. Make it titanium and add new colors to run alongside the OPs.

·

the MilGaus. It’s my wife’s “grail” watch. I’ll be modding a homage for her one of these days.

Ball of definitely acquired taste 👍

I daily my black dialled Milgauss, that's me! ;)

I love it but only having recently acquired it there's a part of me that hopes they do discontinue it to make it that extra bit special/odd.

My suspicion is that they will do the identical update that they did to the AirKing since they share the same case.

Although when I was shopping around for one in January, Watches of Swtizerland group told me they had closed the list for all Milgauss models (the AD told me she had never known that to happen) so it could be a sign of its imminent demise....

·

When I first saw the Milgauss, like you @Max, I thought it was a very un-Rolexy Rolex... That said, it has grown on me quite a bit over time. The best part to me is how much utility it does have. As someone who is around magnets fairly often with work, anti-magnetic properties or measures in my mechanical watches are crucial!

I am constantly checking my watches to see how they are gaining or losing time as the days pass when wearing, and magnetism plays a huge role in that. While I'm not in a position to buy a Milgauss at the moment, I have come to a place where I could see myself owning one at some point....maybe 🤣

For now, my Oak & Oscar Humboldt GMT does quite the trick with its Faraday cage! My Pelagos seems to do pretty great too with its silicon hairspring 🙂

Thanks for another great vid mate! Cheers!

Definitely Rolex is a great way to park money, as Watch enthusiasts own 4 Rolex’s because I like this time pieces, also own 2 Panerai’s, 1 Omega, 1 JLC, 1 IWC

Watches are one of my passions but I don’t buy watches because I can make money selling this Watches

It’s all about how much fun I can have with my watches

·

I’m almost ready to pull the trigger as a birthday gift to myself.

·

Sorry, I have no interest in the Milgauss. That jaggety seconds hand kills it for me. I know, picky picky. And I researched the history but it doesn't stand up to the OP or the Explorer. Still, for people who like it, I'm glad that it's easier to get than the hype models. A friend sent me a pic recently of picking up his copy. He was very happy.

·

I felt exactly the same way - a fkn £6k watch with a lightning bolt hand? Not for me.

Until I saw a guy opposite me on the train to work, wearing a crisp white shirt and a black waistcoat- and Black dial milgauss.

It looked fucking pimp. And then I was sold.

No regrets - gave the waistcoats a swerve though..

·

This is the Rolex I most want.

·

That was pretty good Max. I long ago decided I’d buy a Grand Seiko 100 times before I ever waste my money on a Rolex, but the Milgauss is the exception. That green tinted crystal hits it out of the park for me.

Yeah it totally stands out against their other models 👍

·

I think they should release the Milgauss as a Tudor, perhaps a different name.

As a METAS master chronometer. It fits well, Tudor has done a METAS watch before and magnetism is a major thing for the Milgauss and METAS.

Hmm there's an idea!

·

The green flashy bezel crystal always hooked me with the Milgauss, like a dodger catches a salmon's eye. - like it! (The SLGA017 I just got slightly reminded me of the guass since it does it does this very subtly with blue.)

BUT

The Marvel © seconds hand is like a child's idea of making something look 'sciencey'.

The 'antimagnetic' pitch for a watch that is more sensitive to magnets than most modern watches.

A science/medical watch with no date? WTF 🤷‍♂. Writing the date on charts and forms is a constancy of the job and instead of a wrist glance, the Milgauss guy needs to dig out his phone to double check it 😒

And a science nerd watch... that's best on ~8 inch wrists? 😣 ~50mm lug to lug would overhang my wrist by centimeters. It should have default Bill Nye sizing. Say 5.5 to 6.5 inches?

Image

It's such a messed up 'science watch'. I guess we'll see what W&W brings out, like everyone else I expect a shake up on it.

·

Another awesome video!

I think the current Milgauss plays off of classic lines with a cool update. The crystal and seconds hand... come one quirky magnificent!

The tech of the Milgauss is more of a nostalgia play. Definitely fr9nt leading in its day. In car terms kind of this

Image

While we are hoping for this in a new version

Image

The Milgauss in Titanium with the green crystal would be awesome. I think we will see a Submariner in Titanium first. How cool would the new 36mm Explorer I have been in Titanium. I digress . The Milgauss gets a remake or the axe this go around. Omega builds just about every new piece with a Gauss rating that smashes the Milgauss. Nostalgia can only last so long. That said, now I'm looking at them LOL

·

I love the Milgauss, it's quirky and interesting! I'd love to own one some day!

·

I'm not enthusiastic about the current generation Milgauss, particularly the Z-Blue dial. For me, its shade of blue isn't suited to the ethos of the Milgauss. If they keep it in the lineup, I'd like to see them retire the Z-Blue dial and either bring back the white dial or add a silver dial that helps accentuate the green-tinted sapphire. I wouldn't cry if it was retired though.

·

Would love to see the Milgauss get updated like you mentioned

  • 40mm 2022 Air-King case (added crown guards)

  • Syloxi hairspring (yes, Rolex has been selling this for a few years already... not sure why they haven't rolled it out to other references ESPECIALLY the Milgauss)

That's it! keep everything else the same (maybe double batons at 3-6-9 like they have with the Oyster Perpetuals).

Edit 3/27/2023 12:30am: HAS THE MILGAUSS BEEN DISCONTINUED??!?!?

·

@johnxy888 looks like it. No announcement and now removed from the model list. I know what I’ll be wearing today.
