Moonswatch - Worth it?

Hey everyone.

Although I never bought into the Moonswatch hype, thanks largely to availability (not stocked in my area) and the tactics of the Swatch group (stating that the watches would be available online after launch - which turned out to not be the case), I have just walked past a Swatch shop during a visit to Edinburgh UK and noted they had several models in stock.

It got be thinking:

Is it worth grabbing one?

Does anyone here have one? If so, what's the ownership experience like after the initial novelty has worn off?

It also considered that I'll be another £240 away from getting something I really want (which I have no idea what that is at this point).

Cheers.

Probably not.

More of a novelty than a regular rotation watch.

YMMV

Thanks.

Yeah, tend to agree.

In a moment of madness, I could've pulled the trigger but then I thought of the old saying:

"Buy in haste, repent at leisure" and carried on waking..

Yes it's plastic, but I enjoy mine.

Fair enough 👍

·

I enjoy mine. It's still a fun watch to have as long as you have the right expectations. You're getting a #swatch not an #omega.

I bought a £2.35 "homage" and it's just as good as the real one my wife has (except that the chronograph is only decorative).

There are better value Swatch chronographs available.

I wear mine all the time! Keep coming back to them.

Don’t sleep on the Blancpain either - it’s maybe my current favourite..

I have 2. I love them. They are not the Omega Moonwatch. If you think you are getting a high end watch then you will be disappointed.

They are a swatch that looks like the Omega Moonwatch. They are light and fun.

Again, I love mine. But to each their own. That's the best part of this "game" "hobbie", "addiction"???? Try one one. See if you like it.

It is really a personal decision.

·

I have a Mission to Mercury, and I love it but as others have said, YMMV.

I think if you can set aside the politics of how Swatch sell it and go in expecting a Swatch styled to look like an Omega and not (as many people expect) a cheaper, made for the masses Omega, then you'll enjoy it for what it is.

Mission to Jupiter was one of the styles they had in stock..

·

Worth it? No. It's an overpriced hype watch in the cheapest build quality possible. A giant group like Swatch could have easily offered a proper stainless steel watch for the same price but they decided to go the cheapest route possible for maximum profit.

But then again, most watches are overpriced and most luxury brands mark up their watch an obscene amount for profit. Swatch is probably not even the worst offender in that category.

Most watches aren't worth their price. But we still buy them because we're suckers. 👍

·

I too added a different band and it's fun to wear. Faked out a friend at first glance. 😁 It does scuff easily, but what can you expect?

Image
·

I do use mine almost on a daily basis.

Great design, lightweight, always on time and works for any occasion.

Definitely worth it

Image
·

Love mine ,wear it most days. I think it gets bad press because of the sales tactics ,which are terrible

Image
·

I would like to buy it just to have it but can’t seem to justify spending the money for it knowing I’d never wear it. 😅

·

I don't treat it like my other watches if that makes sense . . . it's a display piece, a weird little collectible associated with a bit of a watch frenzy phenomena . . . doesn't hurt that its colorful. But it's delicate and one day it'll stop ticking. I wear it occasionally around the house and that's about it.

·

The Omega Speedmaster is a very nice watch. It commands a premium price and is probably worth it. But the Swatch "Moonswatch" is really a cheaply made piece of junk that is sold for $300, even though it is probably worth $50 or less.

If you want this style watch, and don't want to spend the $7,000 to $10,000 for real thing, then you could buy the Swatch homage for $300. Or, you could buy a Pagani Design homage for $60, which is a much better watch than the Swatch version.

Here is a video comparing both homages.

Haven't come across a Mission to Mars yet, but when I do, I'll probably pick one up. Also... If you haven't been to The Real Mary King's Close, I highly recommend it. (If you like history)

·

Nope!

·

I purchased one because my wife bugged me to buy one (she actually wanted me to purchase all of them - a temptation I resisted).

It’s a fun watch that’s relatively inexpensive and let’s people know you are a collector especially if you replace the hideous Velcro strap.

Is it worth it? Ummm - no. The watch is very cheaply made and will not stand repeated wearing.

Is it a great conversation starter? Yes.

Here’s mine…had to go loud with the yellow…

No

·

Go for it. I think Pluto is the best one. I don't wear mine all the time, but they do get worn frequently and they're great fun.

My moonwatch next to my moonswatch. Virtually no difference🤫

I'm all over the map. My collection is an unfocused cautionary tale but I buy what I like and stick my thumb in the eye of those that try to shame the choices of others. It's after just a watch.

Wishing you nothing but fun and satisfaction on your future acquisitions!

Yeah. I can relate to that, I'm in the same situation.

I've bought a few pieces over the last couple of years, purely because I liked the look of them and nothing more really.

Wishing you all the best too 👍

Don’t buy one of those, look at the Timex MK1 chronograph. They run about 50-70 USD and have a quick set hour hand for travel purposes!

Thanks for the tip 👍

·

I dont think its worth it, you can do much better for that money. Like Timex, Casio in the Edifice line or the Pagani homages.

But you know, If you like it you will buy it.

Here's my experience with the Moonswatch.

Short term: Mid-2023, it was still hard to obtain at retail. I got lucky and got the Jupiter at a Swatch AD. I mostly kept it in the box, afraid to scratch it. The protective sticker even stayed on the crystal most of the time. 🤣

Image

A few months in: I bought 3rd party straps to "save" the stock nylon NATO, which felt cheap anyway. It felt novel and looked pretty sweet, but I disliked that the metal buckle clashed with the plastic watch case. I was getting bored of the bland Jupiter colorway, and wished I got a bolder color instead (Uranus).

Image

A few months later, I got the Swatch Fifty Fathoms and loved it more than the Moonswatch. It had more wrist presence, which I liked for casual fits. Hardly ever wore the Moonswatch, if at all.

Now, almost 1 year since purchase: A realization came over me, that the stock strap is what completes the look of the Moonswatch. It's been back on the stock NATO ever since. The strap has broken in and feels comfortable on my wrist.

It goes so well with most of my outfits, sometimes I'd wear it 3x in a week, whether at the office or during weekends. Maybe it's thanks to the neutral Jupiter colorway. It's perfect for when I don't want to be wearing a metal watch.

Hey, great insights, thank you!

I think I'm going to pass though, since I think the only one I was truly interested in would've been the Mission to Mars, which this AD doesn't have.

I'm probably going to put the money towards something else and there's so many watches out there that I like (and I can't have them all 😅)

Great suggestions. Regarding the Pagani homages, I've seen those but never got round to getting one. They did do a variation of the Mission to Mars and I'm sure it's superior in every respect except one - originality.

Kind of feel the same way about my Heimdallr Monster homage and ET dress watch. Great watches, look fantastic and great build, materials and finishing. No originality though.

In that case, check out the Edifice series from Casio:

https://www.casio.com/de/watches/edifice/

They do have some homagy stuff there as well, but otherwise lots of original designs. Lots of chronographs.

Or, how about you stay with Swatch? Those regular quartz chronos looks pretty nice.
