Either Omega or Fortis. Fortis already has a watch meant for a Mars mission. https://www.fortis-swiss.com/amadee-20/
But we all know Omega is cooking something similar up and is aiming to be the first watch on Mars so they have something to milk for marketing purposes for the next 80 years.
I think this is more of a case of survivorship bias. The only watches that made it this long were the best designed and assembled watches. This is the same phenomenon that happens with appliances too. Sure, some stuff was better built “back in the day”, but we are only seeing and using the examples that survived to the current day. All the others were thrown away and forgotten about years ago. We are of course going to notice the watches that fail and die within a few years and make note of it, but I can guarantee you that happened 40-50 years ago and probably thought the same things we do. “Watches were so much better 40 years ago! They were meant to last!”. Give it another 40 to 50 years and people will pick up current model Seiko 5s and say to themselves “They don’t make them like they used to!”.
