What To 'Watch' Out For - Style Faux Pas

I'm eagerly awaiting my 1950s Roamer Super Shock to arrive! (Similar to the one pictured above)

Which leaves me a couple days to ponder how I'd most like to wear it. I thought I'd throw it out to the group and ask what some of your watch wearing do's and dont's are, especially around vintage or heritage pieces!

What are some of your pet peeves when wearing watches, are there certain styles you absolutely wouldn't wear with particular styles of clothes, etc etc. I'm open to hear everyone's different thoughts and tastes! 😁

I've seen dress watches that somehow looked good on a nato, and divers that look great on leather so I can’t really say much here.

That said, I think brown leather is the go to. Maybe a perlon if you’re feeling crazy? Whatever you choose, make sure to post some pics. Good luck.

Plain business shirt, unbuttoned and loosely rolled sleeves + jeans and good quality leather shoes and you're good to go. Let the watch shine.

·

Avoid the rain !

·

Do whatever you want (it's your watch) don't listen to people who tell you what you should do (including this if you don't want to)

·

I tend to use my vintage watches as dress watches. Most go well on formal occasions and it's rarely the most demanding of environments.

I don’t try to wear an “appropriate” watch for whatever I’m wearing, ever. If I want to wear a particular watch then I wear it. For me, it isn’t about style, I just wear the watch that I enjoy wearing. If it’s summer and I’m wearing shorts and a t shirt but I feel like wearing the Tank, then I wear it. But I realize many will disagree and that’s fine.

I'm assuming specifically with vintage right?

Absolutely! Mine isn't as pristine as the stock image posted, it's got far more patina but it's been well looked after in its 70 years! I'll be sure to share some pictures! 😊

Love it! Dress 'slightly' down, or up depending on the ocassion. It so happens I walk around like that quite a bit, so that'll fit in perfectly 🤣

Don't tell me what to do! 😂😂

I'm actually fishing around for style ideas, so I'm quite open! If I like something someone's suggested I'll go with it, if not, I'll politely thank them for sharing and move on 😁

I agree. Due to the different styles and fashion, watches from that era are more 'dressy' in look compared to modern counterparts. However, I'm interested to see how casual I can wear this Roamer. It's got so much Heritage I'd love to be able to wear it more often than just special occasions! 😊

Love the confidence!! I'll give it a try, see if it's for me! I currently try to match a little in terms of colour, but that's the extent of it. I'd love to go more casual with the Roamer: I'll report back if I like it in shorts and a t-shirt! 😁

I totally agree most were designed to be daily wears it's only their fragility that keeps me from wearing them more. Zero water resistance little shock proofing and vulnerable to magnetic leaves me a little paranoid. 😁

Wear whatever watch you want with whatever outfit you want. If you’re hurting anyone, who cares? Life’s too short to care what others think.

It's a good idea for general public appearance, but I do specificaly mean that modern (even vintage) sportswear is not a good match for a vintage watch.

True, I don't think it was ever intended to be a 'sporty' watch. Just a nice, every day gentleman's watch. So, daily wear with trousers and a shirt, or in the office. Probably not to the gym though 😉

My understanding is that midcentury sport watches mean you'd go camping and fishing in them, not triathlon and Parkour.

This. Unless your vintage watch is a digital one, stick with smart casual.

Matching a bit certainly makes sense and whatever makes you happy is most important! The Roamer is gorgeous and it deserves to be worn, but again that’s just me. 😃

That's the plan! I can't wait to see it, hopefully tomorrow! I tend to wear quite a bit of blue shirts for work, so I'm looking around to see if a nice blue leather strap might work with the white/patina dial!

·

I’d personally swap the strap for a brown leather or potentially a nato (depending on the watch itself). Anyways, this is a beautiful watch, I’m looking forward to your future post once it arrives!

·

I've seen a few Roamer watches while perusing fleabay- they did some nice pieces, and aren't silly money. That one looks sweet.

Yea I've been looking for a Roamer with this exact dial layout, in decent enough condition, at a decent enough price, from someone I can trust a wee bit. A bit difficult to align all 4 of those, but it did. So I had to jump on it! Fingers crossed... It's meant to arrive today!! 🤞

Wow that's pretty! I love a silver sunburst dial! Has that always been your watch? Or did you get it from someone/somewhere?

When I clocked out of work, the tracking app said it was still in transit between depots. So I had resigned myself to getting it after the weekend. Within 20mins of getting home, my staff texts and says there's a parcel for me! I was going to commit to the 40min round trip to go grab it, but the look from my wife suggested tomorrow might be the better option 😂

That's super special! And it looks to be in great shape.

I haven't had that kind of connection to my past in terms of family heritage, so hoping to create some heritage of my own, for my future! 😊
