Battle of the entry level luxury rectangular dress watches

Frederique Constant are about to release their updated take on the tank-ish (gondolo-ish?) dress watch. Since FC kind of (albeit not in every regard) competes with Oris in terms of market segment, this immediately triggered the comparison to Oris' latest "Rectangular". Only taking the watch head into consideration: which one would you choose over the other - and why?

For reference: Monochrome Watches on the Oris as well as on the FC.

·

FC has a genuine vintage vibe about it’s design and details.

·

Sorry Oris, but the numeric indices, only at cardinal points, don't fit so well, and the tiny  date window replacing one doesn't help. Although I do prefer the Oris crown to that protuberant onion on the FC.

·

Also chose Oris and agree with @OscarKlosoff on the points made above. But I prefer the case shape and the more modern look of the Oris in general.

·

I voted FC but I actually think both of these dials are too busy and I really don't like center seconds on rectangular dress watches like these.  No seconds or small seconds only.

Cartier and JLC have nailed a lot of the aesthetic.

If pressed, I'd prefer a Seiko Tank to either of these.

I own the same reference. Great little watch that scratches 95% of my tank itches.

the Longines Dolce Vita wins. Just my opinion…

Hey @Edge168n!

Amazing strap! It is exactly what I am looking for!

Where did you find it?

FC all the way. The Oris is priced like a Longines DolceVita, which Longines offers way superior finishing and a high-grade ETA. Nothing about the Oris is worth its MSRP. Not even a half of it. As is the case with...well, most things Oris.

FC stands out with its finishing, like most FC do. From every side. FC's finishing on their Sellitas beats Oris - with its perfunctory splash of red paint - by a mile. If I was to choose between that FC Carree and the Longines DolceVita, now that'd be a tough call. Oris? In the first place, I wouldn't consider it at all.

·

The Frederique Constant's crown jumps right into my eye from every angle, of those two I prefer the Oris but both aren't really my cup of tea..

·

I prefer Oris as a brand by quite a large margin, but in this battle, I like the FC. The crown, the indices, placement of the date window, the dial texture, the WAY better legibility of the hands. The FC is a better thought out design and I question if the Oris lead in votes is more a referendum on the superior catalog of Oris and not this watch.

·

I tried the Oris on once and was quite underwhelmed. I agree on the Seiko tank being a winner. I also like the Nomos Tetra! If I were going budget rectangular though, I think I would save a little extra and grab a pre-owned quartz tank or reverso

Not my watch or wrist but I'm pretty certain that's a hirsch lizard strap in gold brown.

This is the winners choice.  Used quartz Tank Solos are now under $2K and mechanicals around $3K.

·

Of these two, Oris for me. Not really a fan of the date on the FC. But I think their are lots of other great options for a Tank that I'd spend my money first. But of these two. Oris.

Neither. Longines DV for me.

·

Between those 2, I prefer Oris as a brand but prefer the design of the FC. But the real winner is the Longines Dolce Vita.

·

FC is a decent quality brand but the Oris just looks better, plain and simple.

·

I hated the Oris when I saw it in person. I tried on the Longines Dolce Vita and the Baume et Mercier Hampton the same day and ranked the Oris last of the three by a long shot.

The JLC Reverso is amazing but way more expensive. I'm interested to check out this new FC watch. I thought it was a ladies only model.

·

I'd go for the Oris because of the Arabic numerals.

Both watches look great.  I'd be happy with either one.

·

The other square-ish dress watch that I've been looking at is the upcoming Lorier Tonneau dress watch.  I find that shape very appealing.

Yup, another banger by Lorier; came totally out of the blue.

·

I wish the Longines Dolcevita with the small seconds wasn't a quartz. I know thats silly of me but oh well.

·

Oris is the better of those brands, but I prefer the look of the Frederique Constant.
