I think my boss has a fake Rolex - What would you do?

So my boss has mentioned to me several times that he has a Rolex Pepsi. Today he is wearing it - but - it is totally fake. Its got the new style numerals on the bezel - but the bezel is aluminium and shiny - not ceramic. And the overall quality looks very bad.

Apparently he picked it up in the US a few years ago for $7,000. Weirdly he also claims he just had it cleaned up by a watchmaker in the UK.

So what is happening here:

  • It is fake and he knows it and this is all a lie? Pretty weird as he is a wealthy / sensible kind of a chap.

  • Its fake and he doesn't know. And for some reason the watchnmaker didn't know or didn't want to tell him?

And more importantly - what do I do? Tell him my suspicions and either: catch him in a lie or burst his bubble? Or keep quiet...

I'd keep very, very quiet. There must be a loudmouth in the office - there always is one - who has zero filter, tell them and get them to blab it, same result, different blame game! 😄

Oh interesting. Does he know your hobby of watches?

Maybe just drop into conversation that “you’ve helped friends discover fake watches” and extend that offer to him, if he ever needed it.

That or you could say you knew a guy that bought a fake Rolex Pepsi on a US trip and paid $7k for it 😆

This should be a poll. Easier to say hell no.

·

It's your boss let the dude be. There's nothing to gain by addressing this. Either he knows it's fake and now knows you know which undermines his position/status/fragile male mind which means you are now a threat. Or he doesn't and you are now the person who destroyed a proudly held idea of a status symbol and are the one who knows he was gullible enough to fall for it... which means you are now a threat.

Unless your boss is also your life partner or close family member 👏do👏not👏say👏a👏word👏

That "loud mouth" would have no issue saying who told them. I suppose you could leave an anonymous tip for someone, but watch enthusiasts are not terribly common. I imagine people would suspect who identified it as fake, especially if this conversation about watches has already taken place.

Personally, I'd leave it. Chances are better that he's lying than that he's never been told or noticed himself, unless you think he's absolutely not the type to lie about it. You say he is wealthy and sensible, but he may just be sufficiently uninterested in watches for that sensibility to push him toward a fake instead of actually paying several thousand dollars.

·

Less is more in this case!!

·

The watchmaker knew if the watch was completely fake. And the watchmaker would have told him for sure. Because the watchmaker doesn't want to be accused of swapping a real for a fake afterwards. So your boss is almost certainly lying in that case and I'd keep my mouth shut and pretend I haven't noticed.

I also don't think the ceramic pepsi was ever available for 7000$.

If the watch is a real 16710 on the other hand, then the insert might be fake and the watchmaker may have used a cheap knock off along with a dodgy polish job. In that case I would tell him, at least about the fake insert and that people "may think it's fake" because of it.

·

If it's me I keep it for now so to avoid any awkward moments and possible low appraisals 😅. Then maybe when time comes I need to leave the company and say goodbye I can freely say whatever I want maybe put it even on my resignation letter depends how good/bad the boss is. 😅

·

You must be a good citizen of the watch community and alert the fake watch police. He should face justtice

·

Who cares?

·

Say nothing to anyone.

·

Or the watchmaker switched it … ?

I’d keep very quiet. Not something to involve yourself in.

·

Let it go. Smile and nod.

·

I would just keep quiet. There’s nothing to gain by bringing this up.

·

You mentioned to your boss that you are a watch enthusiast. Now he is testing your behavior by wearing an obvious fake Rolex. Your reaction now will determine your next raise or maybe even if your keep your job 😮

Good luck 😝

·

Why is his fake watch any of your business??

·

You should wear an obviously fake watch into the office to see what response you get from him 🤣

·

Several things could be going on. Starting with how he was raised and finishing with a narcissist who believes that image is more important than reality. Either way, who cares? As long as you have his measure and he's not living in your head rent free.

·

Just keep the truth to yourself and let your boss feel good.

·

Let it go mate.....

·

If he really paid 7k for the watch, he must have sourced the watch from the watchmaker who serviced it for him. Being a watch guy so many different issues irritate you but I think this is an event you should not involve yourself with, no good results can result. You might come off as a know it all or a smart guy, two unpopular characters in most offices. I once corrected a boss when he used the word SARDONIC incorrectly, I was the project architect on a major contract until my senior decided that my talents were more suited to detailing restrooms.

If you had a friend who'd bought a fake watch, would you not tell them? When it comes to a friend, I'd like to think that most of us would. Now, I'm not saying his boss is his friend - indeed, my advice earlier in this thread was unless the boss is a really close friend, I'd say nothing at all - but it serves to highlight that there are situations in life where people you are familiar with may make a mistake and you might feel inclined to help them. That's why someone's fake watch - that they think is real - may come onto the radar to comment on.

·

Why burst his bubble. Watches are about how they make you feel. If he feels good looking at his “Rolex” then all props to him.

·

I don't understand why this is even a question.

·

Bro tell him it’s not that hard it’s not his child that has autism it’s just a watch you should tell him he’s mature enough to deal with the emotional repercussions on his own

Bosses usually aren't emotional mature to deal with the repercussions. Just say the watch looks nice.

·

I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your boss but if it was my boss I would clown him every chance I got. 😁

·

This thread is hilarious boy, mate none of your business, if you get a prompt sure otherwise stay away it's not worth the hassle.

·

Buy a pepsi and wear it to work

·

Tell him that you read in the papers about the increase in watch robberies and that you were concern about him. Tell him that you noticed he wears a white gold GMT Master II. Look him in the eyes and wait for the reaction. Record his reaction if possible. 😝
