WTF I love cyclops now

I had that stereotype in my mind that the cyclops was only for old people but now that I have one I cant believe how awesome it is.

Also everyone needs to get an alpinist.  Holy crap this is a neat watch

😂 love the enthusiasm and yes everyone should get one!!

·

I have enjoyed my Alpinist for a year now and the cyclops do not bother me one bit - plus I am (getting, I think) old so I need them.  And the color is gorgeous, but then again, it doesn't take much to make me happy😊

·

I am with you.  I love them (now) especially after I had to break out my loupe to set the date on my Tudor BB GMT (it's either too small or I'm too old).

·

I always liked the look of a cyclops, and yes the Alpinist is great!

·

I also thought they were ugly warts until I experienced one first hand. Sadly they tend to appear on watches big enough that they shouldn't be needed.

·

I much prefer the internal cyclops that is ground from the underside of the crystal.  Unfortunately, because of the cost most are on top of the crystal.  Not a deal breaker, and I definitely think it really helps the readability for me.

·

Man, I can't tell you how many watch things I hated and am now liking.  Briefly: steel bezels on dive watches, gold/gold toned watches, steel and gold on the same watch, every Panerai ever, anything with hands and a quartz movement, more than one crown on a watch, and every Royal Oak.

Changing tastes are just part of the journey.

·

I despise cyclopses on watches.  Still, I own this:

and it’s one of my favorites, so make of that what you will.

·

I'm an "old people", and even though my eyesight doesn't belie that fact, I still prefer watches without the cyclops. One huge problem for me is that they distort the numbers unless you're looking straight on. I much prefer a watch with a reasonably sized date window that can be read from multiple angles. Watches with cyclops also tend to feature the date window at the 3 o'clock position, and I much prefer the more balanced positioning at 6 o'clock.

·

I had the one, but flipped it due to the movement being incredibly fast and the cyclops annoying me, the second crown when bumped slightly would move the internal bezel. If it didn't have those issues it would of stayed in the collection as I love the dial, the case shape and size was spot on.

Each to their own though, buy what you like as it keeps been repeated here on WC

For me, the distortion is a cool side effect of the cyclops. It makes the watch “more alive”.

Yeah…the cyclops is cool…and it helps me see the date these days. Next up…a Timex railroad watch with a white face and expansion band.

Must admit they are lovely watches, was looking at them a good while back myself but couldn't decide on either the cream faced one or the green faced one like yours, in fact the indecision drove me to leaving it. Lovely looking peice except for that blob of Satan's frog spawn on the face. You like it and that's what counts and I like it also(except for the blob).

·

Like you I have always until now found the Cyclops to be ugly and often a spoiler on an otherwise beautiful face!

But now I'm 58 and wear reading glasses I can absolutely see the point of it.

One of my favourite daily wears the Citizen Ray Mears has a date window so small as to be barely there and does spoil an otherwise perfect watch imo!

I don't yet own a watch with a cyclops but I do think the Alpinist looks tremendous!

·

Yeah I’ll add the cyclops to me once-hate-now-appreciate list. 👁

oh neat I didn't know they cut them under the crystal - one would think it would interfere with the second hand

I think they are cut in and not bulging out underneath.  I'll post a photo of a watch that I own that has the cyclops ground in from underneath.

·

They should make the entire crystal one giant cyclops lens on every GS model so we can see the dial details better 🙂.

How cool would that be?!?!

ok thats pretty cool  -  thanks for the pics!

Am I the only one who tried reading a cyclops date and... the cyclops didn't help? the distortion is making it harder for me to read. but maybe I'm just weird

I feel like now it must be done just so we can see how it looks.

But yes, I imagine it would be quite distorted.

·

Alpinist - Yes!!

Cyclops - No!!

·

I'm sure it's unfeasible, but I wish the cyclops was simply an available option on watches with a date window instead of an occasional, polarizing feature.
