Rectangular Watch A Must in the collection

Went watch window shopping over the weekends, and visited the Oris & Grand Seiko boutique in Singapore. The Authorised Dealer at Oris told me “A rectangular watch is an absolute must in any watch collector’s collection.”

I somewhat agree with that statement! What do you guys think? Who has rectangular watches in their collection, and what are your top picks for rectangular faces?

The only rectangular watches in my collection are digital, and I’m fine with that. But nice try on the part of the salesman.

Was that said in context with a rectangular Oris they were showing you? My only rectangularish watch is my Seiko 7016 “Monaco”. A great piece of funky 70s style.

Oops, just saw the picture to the right. Very nice!

I actually think the new rectangular Oris is fantastic! Personally I would go for the blue one 😎

·

I totally agree. My Reverso is possibly my favorite piece in my collection.

LOL... And you need a triangular one, a blue one, a pink one, a green one, a mid-night black one, a off-egg white one, a turquoise one, a blood orange one aaaannd, a wolf grey one.

I kinda agree, we all need rectangular in our collection!

Mine is Seiko Chariot from the 70s

·

As much as I'd love a Reverso, I disagree with anyone who says "every collections needs ______".

Statements like that are used to sell you something, or to try to force some idea on the community.

·

I've bought and sold my fair share of Cartier tanks and JLC reversos. They never seem to be able to stick it out in my collection.  I am looking forward to getting my first Cartier Santos though so lets see if a square/rectangular watch finally finds a permanent spot.

·

No fast and hard rules. Some people just collect divers, some collect just dress watches, some collect based on dial, some collect based on function. I personally like as much variety as possible for case material, dial material, brand name, and function. For my dress watch, I would definitely get a rectangular/square watch for that reason. (I like the Cartier Santos on the blue strap for the history and the style)

I only have a couple in my collection right now.

I've never been particularly interested in them, to be honest. And that is likely my own experience. My mother had tiny, rectangular watches. As did my grandmother, now that I stop and cast my mind back over many decades. So basically I grew up associating them far more with smaller, feminine watches.

·

Need is a strong word. I need food, water and oxygen. I WANT a rectangular watch. I like Hamiltons and Lip's rectagular watches. I'm also looking at a Cartier. But non of those are a priority right now ☺️

·

As others have said "Need" and "Must have" in any collection sound like just a sales pitch. I don't own any square or rectangular watches and there not high on my list of watches to add to my collection. I really only associate them with dress watches, which I hardly ever do, dress up. I spend most of my time at work so they wouldn't be appropriate there, but I do think they look good and maybe in my retirement I'll get more of a chance to adorn my wrist with a more dressy piece.

·

I would not collect watches if I could not have a few vintage rectangular or tank watches. It is like owning an ice cream parlor and refusing to stock strawberry ice cream.

And on and on it goes.

·

nice marketing speech 😂😂. but for me i think it is. jlc reverso is my choice 🍺

·

I disagree. Why buying something you don't like just to tick some boxes in a collection? Buy what you like. I can't bring myself to buy a square or rectangular watch.

·

I definitely want to get a rectangular  dress watch at some point.

·

I do love them as dress watch but not very practical for everyday use as the water resistant ratings are usually poor

My rectangular watch 😂

·

My goal is the get matching gold (hers smaller) JLC Reversos, engraved with the date and her new name to exchange on our wedding day IF the girlfriend and I make it that far.

Probably won't be able to swing it though, as gold reversos plus her ring would be a house down-payment. But that's the dream...

·

Cartier Tank or JLC Reverso.  I own and love a Tank.  That being said, I am a huge fan of the Longines Dolce Vita line, the Oris Rectangular line, and the Hamilton boulton (though it is technically not a pure rectangle).  Also, there is a SERIOUS comfort factor when the watch is a rectangle given the branchards in lieu of lugs.  It sits on the wrist so well.

Cheers!  We own the same Tank XL — you’ve convinced me on the blue strap option next!

people that speak in absolutes are either a prophet or a quack. I suspect the salesperson is neither.

No, you don't need a rectangle case, just like you need a Speedmaster or any other iconic watch.

That being said, I have enjoyed (not needed) a few non-round cases over the years

·

Rectangular watches just don’t do it for me. Hence, I have none. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I love the round watches.

·

I have tried numerous rectangular dial watches over many years, for some reason I never keep them long……. I think its just a deep rooted uneasiness in the aesthetics which surfaces and tells me they aren’t for me.

·

Rectangular watches dont have to be in a collection. Its your collection, you must do what you want. I myself would want a lovely one later on.

Cartier Santos style looks great.
