Sub-Collections?

Happy Saturday!  How many of you have sub-collections within your main collection? This could be by brand (e.g., a handful of Seiko) or by function (e.g., Divers).  I know some people collect one brand, or one function, but most collectors I know have a broader set of watches.  Just curious!

I would venture many do, especially those with larger collections. Some have a “collect all the classics” approach. Some start off buying divers, then pivot to dress. Some collect Omega and pivot to GS.

For me, I go through phases. At one point, it was hard to make enamel and porcelain dials. Another point it was German watches and as a result sub collections unintentionally occur.

Sub-collections:

Microbrands

Affordables

Pricier pieces

Divers

Non-divers

and obviously they intersect...

·

Thanks!!! Sounds like a big and interesting collection!

This mirrors my own history.  I’m trying to be a little more intentional now…it’s not easy!

Yes, but love all my watches!

I have a number of ways to sub-divide my collection, categories overlap:

Brands - Omega; GS; Citizen; Skagen; Ball; Oris & many singletons

Types - Divers; Dress; Dual-time; Chronographs; Perpetual Calendars; Moonphase

Drives - Automatic; Spring Drive; Manual; Quartz; Solar Quartz

Case Material - Stainless Steel; Gold; Titanium; Ceramic

Lume - Full lume; Hands only lume; tritium

Whew! I just went on! I’ve been thinking of posting some ‘sub-SOCs’ in the future, so you kindled something here.

I got a few other watches, maybe the real subsection is "not casio"

·

Quartz and mechanical are my two subsections though I’m starting to acquire quite a few microbrands so they might deserve their own sub soon.

·

Three.  I have three themes I am aiming for: water, land, and sky.  So, for instance, my Seamasters count towards ‘water’, while my Railmaster would count towards ‘land’.

·

I have a G-Shock wing, a Star Wars wing & a Chronograph wing.

·

Water/Dive watches, Chronographs and Dress & Fun. 3 watch boxes and the Lamp That's all I Need!

Okay Maybe 4 watch boxes...... But that's it! that's all I Need

I do the same, some watches fall in more than one category. With all that permutations and combinations my 14 watch collection feels like 140 watches

I'm into dive watches so my basic collections are modern, vintage, seikos, reissues and oddballs. I'd love to do some pictures but my boxes are a mess at the moment(need another one) but the boss has warned me that's a job for santa 🎅

Mine happened rather unintentionally and I have two sub-collections. Most of my watches are one-off and not too much like the others with the rest of my collection but the quick&dirty picture below shows that I’m a huge hypocrite and I’m not to be trusted.

First is my midsize Seiko diver collection. Started with the black SKX013, which was my main watch for about 7-8 years. I picked up a 4205 and SKX015 along the way, and most recently the SBCM025 HAQ perpetual calendar (the 39mm SKX that people would lose their minds over if released today).

Next is my Scurfa Diver One collection. All of this happened this year and the MS20 and MS21 took a good amount of work and intrusive private messages to find as they are limited editions (Only 100 MS models are made per year). The blue MS21 was my most worn watch over the summer as my BB58 was getting repaired.

I don’t think I have ever really acknowledged that I have all these watches at once. Woof.

American watches

Soviet/Communist watches

Defunct Swiss watch brands

My main obsession is dive watches. Within that I have subsections for Squale, Super Compressors  (and those that look like them), Micro Brands, Spinnaker Piccard's (all three), Seamasters, Blue Dials and vintage....... outside of dive watches, Smiths Timefactors and Speedmasters.......... reading what I've written I realise this is all very random!
