Boring is better

As my tastes mature, I find myself gravitating towards watches that I wouldn't have even given any consideration to in the past. This isn't a good or bad thing, just purely an observation on myself.

My most recent acquisition is the Grand Seiko SBGX261. For me, it's the perfect no-nonsense piece; 37mm, extremely versatile and I need not worry about accuracy since it's slated to be within +10 seconds a year. The finishing is incredible for the money.

So what about you guys? Do you like boring? Is quiet luxury now a thing?

I have always said .. Grand Seiko is Patek quality for a fraction of the price.

I find myself wearing a boring 3 hand no date watches as I get older. My recent pick up the new black bay 36mm.

Love my Sbgx261

I’m not there yet but I can see my tastes evolving this way as I get older.

·

This is probably my grail watch. I would just prefer 44GS case and caped spindle. Also GS should join Citizen and offer their fantastic watches with solar-powered movements. In any case, enjoy this beautiful piece 👍

·

I’m 30 years old now, but I like clean and simple watches too.

My favorite now is the newly released Tag Heuer Carrera date 36mm in blue. It’s gorgeous and runs +/- 1 second per day!

Love this so much. I was eyeing one off too since it was announced but I thought the jubilee was a bit too fancy for me.

·

It's beautiful ❤️ i have a 40mm quartz GS.. and it's way better than 10 sec a year.. enjoy your watch.. ⌚

·

Not sure if it's "quiet luxury" as you put it but my taste over the years have gone from gaudy and flashy to classy and stoic, even or especially in clothing. Subtle is always better. It's not boring, it's elegant.

When the S&G model with the jubilee came out last year. I knew I would get one if it came out in steel. Surprised myself that I went with the 36mm this time. Felt really comfortable and fit my skinny wrist better when I tried it on. Now all my other watches look huge (I usually wear 39-41mm)

·

If they made a 36-37mm spring drive (not manual wound) I'd be all over it.

·

Trends come and go but Quiet Luxury seems to be making a comeback in 2023. Later on maybe Loud Luxury will be back in style. 😁

·

I totally agree. I see the watches with all the complications and I can admire the technology, but it's just not for me. For me three handers are still the best design, even don't care much for a date.

It seems to be a path followed by a large number of watch nerds, I make exactly the same observation about my own tastes.

·

Got there yet maybe one day 😁

·

Nice! Hard to beat GS 9F quartz for accuracy. I have the SGBN003 with the 9F86 GMT movement. It gained less than one second in a year the first year I got it.

·

Hey, I'm not even that old (in age and in my interest in watches) but I've very quickly realised I don't really enjoy the look of divers or chronographs... I mean, some look fantastic but they're just not for me. Dressier, simpler watches are best, especially 36-38mm in diameter, which means mostly subtle three-handers on leather straps. A four-hander pointer date or GMT would also be nice, as long as it's a more classic design and not one with a chunky bezel or excessively busy dial.

·

I have always been low profile when it comes to watches, which dovetails nicely with being an under the radar person by nature. Boring is good as many have already said. To be honest, a tasteful "boring" watch stands out more than a Ben 10 monster, but to each their own right?

The Lange is nice, elegant.

The credor is off the charts. Is this the version with the enamel dial?

Unfortunately, the Lange isn't in the collection anymore. I just picked up the Credor to take its place (room for one precious metal time-only dress watch). The dial on the Credor is porcelain. The Eichi I had an enamel dial. This is the II.

·

Personally I think that’s a good trade. The Lange is beautiful but the credor is far more rare and arguably even more elegant. I know Lange are famed for movement finishing but the Credor is as good as any other brand, if not better. At least from what I’ve seen. Never had the chance to handle one. Absolutely incredible watch enjoy 👌

Subtly is key.

Please tell me it’s yours and you wear it to business meetings. That would make me happy 😂

I like simplicity. Increasingly so. But I'm not quite ready to go FULL boring.

I like to have a little... Something.

The Railmaster is pretty close to ideal. Simple, clean, and understated. But the subtle dial texture gives me that little extra appreciation.

·

I think there is a correlation between maturity and simplicity (in a non-pejorative sense). An ability to appreciate a great execution of a basic concept: a three hander wristwatch with a date. Everything you want, nothing you don't, made without compromise. With these relatively basic models GS have distilled watchmaking to something approaching purity. It's unlikely to blow up the Tiktok crowd but for those of us who have been around the horological block there's so much to admire and appreciate.

·

Just perfect.

(Yawn) Credor and Lange. Yawn (NOT).

This could be the most exciting watch in a collection of nothing but Xerics and Mr. Jones.
