Love the idea of it, pocket watch style case ❤️🥰….and she’s a bit chunky but we have to hold on to something right 😉😂… found a photo of the Old Laurel…so the new one is very close…

No - you don’t put a power reserve on a watch like this, total immersion breaker. Plus it should really be manual wind, not an automatic, if you want vintage kudos, but that is not the end of the world.

And no… why don’t you try and not be predictable and buy a Seiko.

I find it interesting you don't seem to take issue with the date. Just miss that bit or do you actually have no qualms with it? (Honest curiosity)

the sub-second dial is a date!? I missed that completely. Yeah, no. This is awful. I assumed they sub-seconded but now I’ve noticed the sweep second. This is an absolute mess.

I do have to agree that I wished if they did power reserve just placed it in the back…but I do like the vintage vibe c’mon 😉

I am looking for an enamel dial dress watch with breguet numerals, but this ain’t it.

Listen, it’s points for trying, but a power reserve and a date sub-dial, it’s a complete mess. You can pull multiple sources but it makes no sense on a watch that looks as retro as this.

This isn’t a dress watch, it’s too thick. This is for steampunk cosplaying.

I appreciate I am being incredibly predictable, but I think Vario nailed the modern interpretation of this sort of style with the 1918, and you could probably get a genuine trench watch for less than Seiko RRP.

Seiko confuses me sometimes. This one is just odd.

I do not like Breguet numerals on a watch made after 1950 (that includes Baltic and others).

·

I truly adore that dial. Elegant white enamel with beautiful inky-black brush stroke numerals and tiny exquisite details like on the 4...

Image

But the thickness and all the subdials slapped onto it makes me sad.

Though perhaps I am trying to make it into the elegant watch it was never meant to be.

·

It's a really gorgeous reissue, but I feel like this is going to (unfortunately) follow the footsteps of the alpinist, never really living up to its older predecessors and for twice the price.

·

That looks really nice, like the old look but specs sound scary and date dial not for me.  Still, I hope some similar laurel options follow this

I think when they first made this it was meant for daily use and coming from a pocket watch… @Fieldwalker post above the 1914 Laurel , their new rendition is sooo close but not hating on it it think it s nice retro vibe…

Thank God they ditched the small seconds! And there is no stupid display case back!

It's taken a while to read through the many opinions expressed on this interesting(odd?) watch. Clearly lots of knowledge and expertise being vented.

I'm coming at it from a more simplified and less knowledgeable background...

I like Trench Watches and it reminds me of that.

I like bund straps ( though this is oddly narrow).

I like the numerals and am not offended that they may not be period correct or too typical.

I find the thickness odd although I'm guessing that is true to the original type.

I like the power reserve especially as you can hardly see it?

What I thought was the small seconds is a date indicator and I think that's pretty cool?

I'm a seiko fan which does skew my view a tad I suppose.

So as an enthusiast with less knowledge than most on this post I like it quite a lot!

I like the idea, but I agree with @chronotriggered in that I think it's a bit of an aesthetic mess.

P.s. I don't think depth of knowledge has a bearing on preference. You're as entitled to an opinion as anyone else.

I personally love Seiko's efforts to re-issue their vintage designs. This in particular is quite special, it is the modern reinterpretation of Seiko's first ever wrist watch.

It's not perfect, and there are compromises. But let's not focus on the flaws, and instead celebrate what a great time it is to be a watch lover right now. We have modern reinterpretations of Seiko landmark watches like the 62MAS, Alpinist, and King Seiko. It may be another couple of decades before Seiko remakes their vintage-inspired designs again. So I'm grateful that we can enjoy these throwbacks to history, with a shiny new box and warranty.

And as with any watch, try it on and see if it calls to you. ✨

i luv it

i do think i'd sooner get the vario trench

·

Not gonna buy it, but it's cool

Holy design disaster batman!

I assume the conversation went something like this.

Ichibunz - Hey seiko, I have a great.  You should bring back a quirky vintage design like the Laurel. You will not sell a ton, but a couple of watch nerds in the internet will think it is great, and you are listening to customers.

Seiko - That is a wonderful idea.

Seiko Bean Counter - Make sure it's an automatic and has a date otherwise it won't sell.

Seiko - Ok. If you say so, but now it is the size and shape of a Curling Stone.

Seiko Bean Counter - We can fix that.  Add a power reserve.  Make sure it makes the watch unbalanced and distracts from how useless the date is.

Seiko -  Ok

Seiko - Ichinuz.  Her you go.

Ichibunz - Thank you Seiko, thanks for giving me a total WTF watch.  I buy it and love it otherwise you will never listen to me again.
